How Do You Keep Your Closets Smelling Fresh?

Hello, Ladies!

I was going through our front coat closet this morning (mostly winter coats, random sports gear, etc., and noticed that it smelled a bit stale. Not a BAD smell like something died, just stale, like the closet hasn't been opened in awhile, or old shoes or something.

I've noticed this with a couple of other closets in the house.

How do you keep your closets smelling fresh and nice?

Thanks! :)

What can I do next?

You can get dried herbs such as lavender and put it in a tea ball and hang in you closets. Repels moths and smells wonderful.

we've got a product called damp rid, it comes in tubs and can be found in bed bath and beyond and other places.

if your community allows it, hang the stale smelling clothes out in the sun. They will smell fresh soon enough.

good luck to you and yours,

Sporting Gear.. Needs to wiped down, perspiration from hands and feet linger on this stuff. make sure the coats have been cleaned.

Any shoes or boots, will need to be aired out or at least some baking soda in them. I would put an open box of Baking soda in there. on the top shelf or in one of the corners.

"Damp Rid" will help and you need to open these closets every once in a while.. and sweep or vacuum in there.

With coat closets - make sure that off-season clothing items are laundered before they are put away for the season.

Shoes that are wet, smelly or dirty should be clean and dry before going in a closet.

Sports gear should be stored elsewhere, either in a mesh bag or vented bin.

Damp Rid does help.. we use that along with the silicia gel that comes in new purses, shoes, etc in our safe to keep dampness out.

As for closets, I put an open bar of soap in the closet OR a bounce dryer sheet and it also helps keep things fresh.

Good luck

Pier 1 sells sachets. The vanilla is awesome. Try putting two in each closet and change them every 4 months.
