I believe I love food! I love it so much that being on a diet for me has been alot. How do I keep my self going>? The foods look so good sometimes! Is it ok to have a treat every month or even every two weeks? Like a burger? I do work out five times a week! Running and in home exersizes!

I think you have to decide what your goals are for yourself. Some people have an ideal weight or a pants size they'd like to be. For me, I just want to be happy and healthy!! Some people belive food is just to nourish the body and don't get tempted by treats... but for most of us, food is much more than about just nourishment and we enjoy it a great deal... So my motto is that everything is OK in moderation. Depending on what you want to endulge in and what else you are eating, it may be OK to treat yourself on a daily basis with a small treat-- or maybe just weekly if you're talking hamburgers-- but regardless, depriving yourself just makes you want it more and you will end up going overboard.
The fastest way to fail on a diet is to deprive yourself of foods you love. You should allow yourself a treat... cheeseburger, cookie, whatever your favorite is. The key to success is moderation ... anything that you overdue is the problem. Also, try to have protein with every meal because it is more satisfying and will stay with you longer than foods higher in sugar and carbs. Sounds like you are doing great!
Everything in moderation is my motto. The second you label something as off limits, you will instantly want it and it will be hard to stop thinking of it.
But... make it harder to get those things. Don't keep a stock of unhealthy snacks in your home. If you're having a craving, make yourself have to get up, get dressed, get in the car, go to the store and buy it then. And only buy enough for the one time. I was looking at Winn Dixie not long ago and they sell these adorable little ice creams that are so tiny. Just enough to calm a craving and not enough to go overboard.
I also love food and love trying new food. Find the food you're most drawn to and look up healthier recipes online.
It's frustrating when you're doing such a good job eating right and you turn on the tv and see nothing but restaurant commercials... yes, that grilled chicken alfredo DOES look tasty. There's no such thing as a healthy alfredo sauce either. I've looked! :o)
Hi S.,
A treat occasionally is okay...however, if you're getting the proper nutrition and you are eating good food, those treats won't taste as good as they used to. If rich or fatty foods still taste good, then your body is still craving them and all you are doing on your diet is depriving yourself of nutrition. As soon as the diet is over, you will go back to eating them.
I don't even want a piece of cheesecake anymore! It was my absolute favorite and I could have eaten a whole cake. Reexamine your diet and make sure the nutrition is there. Remember, even the FDA says that "good" foods don't have the same nutrition as they did forty years ago!
Regards,
M.
First of all, you are doing great with the exercising. That is the first step. I have also been on diets before and want to tell you that you can indulge every once in a while. I am back to my prepregnancy weight after having two children so you can take me seriously. I think the most important thing to do is that when you do indulge don't overindulge. Maybe have a half a burger, one small piece of chocolate, or a scoop of ice cream. I would say that once a week is okay as long as it is not overdone. My biggest diet advice to you is small servings. That has helped me more than anything. You have to indulge yourself every once in a while or you will give up all together. Good luck
Dear S.,
You obviously can't stop eating. You don't indicate whether or not you have a weight problem. You are obviously in good condition because you indicated that you work out five times a week. By doing so you are helping yourself a lot so take a look at the treat that really will make you feel rewarded and have that once a week. The worst place to be in is the one that makes you feel as if you have been cheated out of somethinhg so do what you can to have a change in mind set.
It is better to say, "Wow, tomorrow is Tuesday I am going to have a hamburger and french fries", than it is to say "Well tomorrow is Tuesday and it is the only day that I can allow myself to have a hamburger".
Do some positive self talk about your whole life. "I am a great person because I work out on a regular basis."
Have a Big Atta Girl from me,
Vivian
I am also just beginning to work out five days a week but have a terrible sweet tooth. I've found that what works for me is to find more healthy ways to indulge. I buy Special K with chocolate. It has little pieces of chocolate in it and its 120 calories per serving. Works great in place of cookies as a snack. Yogurt (they make chocolate yogurt too), fruit dips, little things like that help me satisfy my cravings while still keeping up with a healthier lifestyle. I feel you though. The more I exercise, the more I crave cheesy burritos and cookies! Stick with it as best you can and take your time. Diets and eating habits are different for everyone. You just have to find what works for you. Good luck!
We all love to eat! Find a rhythm so you will not feel deprived. Some people do really well with self-discipline during the weekdays and relax a little on the weekends. Maybe that means a small dessert, a mini candy bar, one medium handful of potato chips. When you can do that and actually stop at the pre-determined amount, you'll feel great about your self-control. Understand that eating sweets can prime the pump so that you'll want more, but feeling in control makes it possible. I'm a long-time psychologist in private practice with over-eating issues one of my areas. You can check out my web site at www.drpam.com. Another bigger is to NOT bring into the house foods that are too tempting. If your kids must have them, take them out for ice cream. Ask yourself if you are creating sugar dependence in your children. Setting a reasonable rhythm puts us in control, avoids feeling deprived then stuffing yourself. You can do it!

What are you craving?
My weakness is chocolate, fried foods, JUNK, you name it.
I find that giving in to my cravings while compromising helps me. I have that occassional burger but I leave the bun off.
I also find that drinking an 8 ounce glass of water before meals and when cravings settle in helps me a lot. It doesn't always keep me from eating it but I don't consume AS MUCH.
From one struggling dieter to another ~ Feel free to contact me anytime.
I reccomend checking out SparkPeople.com
It's entirely, absolutely free and has lots of healthy recipies and you can track both your calories and excercise progress.
It sounds like this would be for you as it allows you to have little indulgences.
Also, by tracking your calories, you are able to know just how much you can induldge as in, wether or not you can have that burger.
SparkPeople also encourages treating yourself and builds it into your weekly menu (which you choose if you want to have them create a menu or not) such as ice cream, brownies, cookies, ect.
Their calorie counter includes fast food and resturants, brand name grocery products and such. You simply click from a list and it shows you how many calories, fat, vitamins, ect.. and puts it into a chart for you.
It will show you daily, weekly, and monthly progress.
I saved a chicken oregano and sweet peppers recipe I was sent this morning from sparkpeople. Their recipes are simple and often delicious.
Best wishes,
J.
Hi,
I am in the same boat!
What I have found, was when I have good eating habits I do not deny myself a treat every now and again.
Everything is OK if its in moderation.
I am very good all week, and if I have been craving for a "bad food" I give myself an "off" day once a week. Usually it Saturday.
I like it because its something to look forward too, and can be seen as a little reward for being good all week.
I use the website sparkpeople (http://www.sparkpeople.com) to keep track. Since I joined I have lost 20lbs simply by staying within my daily calories and giving myself an "off" day once a week. Just stay focused and you can do it!
Good Luck
I have been a trainer now for 8 years and I get this question all the time. You have to change the way you look at food. Most people think that food is something that you eat to pass the time but it is what you need to live. Try not to use food as a reward for going to the gym 5 days a week or running. You should eat because you have to for life not for enjoyment. You should be eating 5-6 small meals a day and eating about every 2-3 hours. You need to eat so you do not store body fat. The question should not be how do we stop eating but how to we make sure that we are eating the right things so that we can eat whenever we want. Please let me know if you have any questions. I would be happy to help you in any way that I can. I am from a Marine family so Semper Fi.
Food is wonderful. Your require it to sustain life. The reason you love all the wrong stuff is because you have trained yourself to love it. I used to eat at fast food restaurants 5 or 6 times a week...mmmmm deep fried anything. I used to put "gooey" sauces on EVERYTHING...bbq sauce, alfredo, cheese...WOW! I used to eat a large bag of potato chips DAILY. Now I don't.
I LOVE FOOD in all it's NATURAL glory.
Try a nutrtional body cleanse (www.DrSpeaksOut.com). If you like the video, call me. Oh did I mention I lost 37 pounds nad have kept it off for over 2 years?

I managed to lose a lot of weight doing this program. Others have just toned up and achieved their ideal body weight. It is a program that allows you to eat a lot and still be healthy. There is one cheat day a week that you can eat ANYTHING you want all day long!
I hear you, I love food too. I am an appettite suppressant junkie! If I had a bad headache, I wouldn't take an aspirin until I feel like I'm gonna die, but for suppressants, I'd pop them any time of the day just so I don't overeat. I know it's a big problem.
I work out every week and anytime I can. I wake up and am desperate to go to the gym because I feel like I need to burn what I ate.
I recently, after listening to hubby, tried to devote only to one diet/fat burning pill...Hydroxycut... and I really think it's working. Believe me, I'd take 2-3 different pills at one time (not telling hubby because he'd take me to a psych ward)
I take it before I eat and I feel it boosting me when I work out...I love it and I really think it's suppressing my appettite, just last Friday, my friends at the gym told me that they see a big improvement. But then again Easter came, and I feasted.....why can't I hate food just a little bit?!
