How Do I Shift Baby's Long Sleep Time?

My son is 9 weeks old and doing great. He's drinking 6 oz of formula at a time and will go about 4 hours between feedings except at night - he falls asleep around 8:30 pm and gets up again at 2:30 am and then goes back to every 4 hours. My question is, how do I shift his long sleep period to a time that more closely matches my bedtime? It isn't feasible for me to go to bed at 8:30 because of my older children. It would be awesome if I could get him to go to sleep at 10 or 10:30.

We have tried everything to keep him awake but NOTHING seems to work. Loud noises don't faze him, being spoken to, played with, danced with, etc. does nothing. He will fall asleep in the middle of the activity. He is awake quite a bit during the day in spite of me trying to coax him into a nap. Any suggestions?

Sleepy in Reading,
K.

wake the baby up at 1100pm before you go to sleep and change him and feed him then put back to sleep...that is what i do with my little one she is 4 months now and will pass out at 7pm and i need sleep too but i also have a five year old and a three year old so i let the baby sleep but i do not let her sleep in her room until after i wake her up and feed her again then i put her in her room then i go to bed....and she will sleep until 630am ...but it is important to let her sleep when you don't want her to where it is noisy like where you and your other kids are playing....then sooner or later they will not sleep during that time...

Bath time!!!!!!!Take like 25 min to bath him, and I wouldnt do it till like 9pm....then I would massage lotion on his entire body.Put him to bed at 10pm.......Naps....I would start a routine......3 to 4 hrs after he awakes in the morning, I would get him ready for a nap, place him in his crib. I would also do this again like 3 hrs after he awakes from his nap...unless he is wide awake...you do not want to start him on NOT SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT.

I like all the advice that you have been given so far. The bath and all. But please keep in mind that 9 weeks old is still VERY young. It is GREAT that he is already sleeping for 6 hours at bedtime. When he gets up at night for that feeding, make sure you keep it all about the feeding. Keeps lights very dim, don't talk to him or play with him. Teach him that it's time to eat and go right back to sleep. Or does he already eat at 2:30am and go right back to sleep? Good luck, but be patient. If nothing wakes him when you are trying, his body must really need the sleep. His body is going through a lot of changes and growing at a very fast speed. Unfortunately, you may just have to tough it out. I know how you feel, believe me! Also, what time do your older children go to bed? They are still very young and should be going to bed no later than 8pm, also. So start your bedtime routine right after dinner, like 7pm if you can. Then you can try to go to bed around 9:30. I don't know. But try it.

When I try to get my daughter (5 month old) to stay awake a little longer at night I put her in the bath. If you take your time with the whole thing it can buy you a good 45 minutes! Take your time washing him and when you're done, give him a good lotion massage and play with him while you diaper and dress him - it always buys me extra time at night! Then they usually sleep really good afterwards!! As with all things related to baby, sometimes we just have to wait it out. Good luck!

What I did when my oldest was a baby & wouldn't sleep thru the night was add a lil cereal to her formula. I do that now w/ my almost yr old baby. I've been doing it w/ her for a while now. Both my girls have been good about sleeping thru the night. Hope this helps.
