How Do I Know If My Toddler Is Securely Attached?

I've read that there are different types of attachment groups, and I am worried that my toddler may fall into the insecure group. I suffered from PPD and know that at times I may have not been "on" all the time. Is there anyway to know whether my toddler feels secure in our relationship?

He makes eye contact from a short distance, but not always up close. If I kiss him, he looks away. He comes to me when hurt and checks in with me, but doesn't smile everytime I come into a room.

What can I do next?

Is he affectionate with you? Do his eyes light up when you come into the room? Does he look for you when you leave the room? Does he smile at you? Does he come to you for comfort when he's hurt or sick? If the answer is yes, then he feels secure.

Most people do look away when you try to stare them down.

Relax. Spend time with your baby. Play. Talk to your pediatrician.

I think you're overthinking this.

Besides what SCW3 answered, does he make consistent eye contact with you or look away?

It's never too late to form an attachment. Ideally you would have bonded from the getgo when he was an infant but he's still very young. If you question how securely he's attached to you, go out of your way to give him extra love and extra affection. Don't waste time questioning whether he's attached or not b/c then you'll be inside your own head and probably won't be focused on HIM. Have fun together, tell him how much you love him, snuggle with him and just give him lots of love and affection. If he's not attached now, he will be.
