My son is only 22 and about a month ago he developed huge bald spots on his head. Now he has about 11 bald spots all around his crown & the sides & back, they are growing bigger. We went to a Dermatologist that his Kaiser doctors referred him to, who said this is stress related & it should grow back because the folicals are still there...This is killing him and me!! I don't know how to help, the medicine they gave him isn't working...his confidence has never been that great & this is destroying him. I am trying to stay positive for him because he is so down, but I just want to cry & scream. His father (my ex-husband) is turning 50 in Oct. and he still has a full head of hair, nobody in either family has ever been through this so young. He is such a smart, funny & handsome kid, why him??? I don't know what to do to help him & he doesn't deserve this! They say stress can make this worse, how in the world can this not bring more stress on him?

What can I do next?

It sounds like Alopecia, which doesn't typically respond to meds. Did the doctor check his thyroid? I hate that "stress causes hair loss" statement coming from doctors. It just sounds like a scapegoat to me. If you can, find some girls to tell him how hot he is. That meant a lot to my brother. He was good looking with great hair, smart, talented, and popular. But losing his hair at 13 was a huge blow to his self esteem. For a time he couldn't see the value in any of those other qualities. And having his mom and sister compliment him and remind him that there are many sexy bald famous men in the world was not quite enough. He needed girls to still want him. One day my mom secretly called one of his female friends and asked her to help in this and she got several girls together to call him and give him encouragement. He suspected Mom had something to do with it, but it still meant a lot to him and he perked up. Another thing that meant a lot to him was when his football team shaved their heads in his honor.

I worked with a guy who has early balding. He kept his head shaved. He looked awesome!! A lot of women actually think bald heads are sexy! Jason Statham! Check out that guy! He keeps his head shaved and he is way hot!!! A full head of hair is nothing really. Most guys wear hats and keep their heads covered anyway!

I agree that he should shave the rest of his head. My grandfather ws completly bald by the time he was 20. And the women in our family just love bald men. My husband keeps his hair super short because he knows thats how I like it.
As for the reason he is going bald. I think that getting a second opinion is never a bad thing and maybe some baseline blood work to make sure there is nothing more serious going on then stress.

I am wondering if it is realated to his thyroid or adrenals. (Well, all thyroid issues have a root cause in either adrenal fatigue or overactive adrenals.)

When a person is under stress, the body will put out higher amounts of cortisol. High cortisol will cause balding. That is why they say stress makes it worse. But a person can put out high amounts of cortisol all the time, and it is called cushings disease. The other thing that can cause balding is prolactinoma, but im not sure if it would caused 'patches'.
Parasites(internal or external) and fungal infections are another idea.

Look these up for the symptom list and see if he has any of the other symptoms:

Cushings
prolactinoma
hypothyroid
secondary syphillis
exposure to toxins
hypopituitarism
high blood iron
low protien
low testosterone/high DHT
lupus
tinea capitis
demodicosis
dermatopytosis
ringworm
low zinc
