How Do I Get My 20 Month Old to Stop Eating Lint/dog Hair?

My 20 month old will pick up the smallest piece of lint or dog hair and put it in her mouth. She will chew and eat it! I vacuum and right after I vacuum she can still find something (we have a Golden Retriever who is shedding). When I try to take it out of her mouth it is a struggle and she can bite really hard. I don't know why this is such a facination with her. Thanks in advance for your advice.

What can I do next?

IF YOU VACCUM ON A DAILY BASIS, THERE REALLY IS NOTHING ELSE YOU CAN DO. TO KEEP THE DOG FROM SHEDDING SO MUCH, YOU MIGHT TRY TO BRUSH HIM MORE OFTEN-THAT REDUCES SHEDDING, WHICH MAY HELP A LITTLE, BUT SHE IS PROBABLY STILL GOING TO TRY TO FIND THINGS IN THE FLOOR AND PUT THEM IN HER MOUTH. JUST KEEP TELLING HER NO & TAKING IT OUT OF HER MOUTH. I WOULD not BITE HER BACK-THAT'S LIKE TELLING HER NOT TO HIT AND HITTING HER FOR PUNISHMENT, WHICH WILL CONFUSE HER. JUST TELL HER IT'S YUCKY AND THAT IT'S BAD, TAKE IT OUT OF HER MOUTH, AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD. DONT MAKE TOO MUCH OF A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT OR ELSE SHE WILL KEEP DOING IT JUST TO GET A REACTION FROM YOU.

KEEP VACCUMING AND BRUSHING THE DOG, AND EVENTUALLY SHE WILL LOSE INTEREST IN THE DUST BUNNIES :)

B.,
I feel you there. My 2 year old daughter used to do strange things like that. Except, she would eat with the dogs in their dish, try to drink from the toilet, eat mud and dirt, chew on rocks, crayons, markers, playdoh, leaves, tried to swallow batteries. I think that's about it. We had to let her know that we don't eat those kind of things. She actually stopped eating majority of things (all this was when she learned how to walk until now). But she still eats the dog food. I guess, if its edible, its okay. Except the toilet water, she won't eat with the dogs anymore, she grabs a little bit and snacks on it. But I guess its called experimenting. We won't let her eat dirt any more..its not good for one..lol..and not like we really let her. Its just that we found out that our dirt has LEAD in it! So yeah, I really feel ya there.

I don't know how to get her to stop, but when placing your finger inside her mouth, place the thumb and forefinger in the joints at the sides of her jaw. When she closes to bite she will feel the pain and stop. Just don't let go til you have swept her mouth clean.

I don't know how to stop her from eating dog hair and lint. I had one that loved to eat dirt out of the flower beds and if she could find a nail out in the yard somehow she loved chewing it. The other one thought it a great game to pick flower buds off the flowers and eat them! I think it goes with the age. We got to the point it was like here is the play pen outside and in you go to save the plants and possible posioning threats with him.
Biting you is totally unacceptable, from my point of view!
Bite her back hard enough to make a mark the next time she bites you. She is old enough to understand the word "no" and that it hurts.

To be honest, she's probably just being a normal toddler. My boys both did the same thing. It didn't matter how well I cleaned the floors. I could hand scrub them and they would find the smallest piece of lint and try to eat it.

It's a phase. Part of it is that young children use their mouths to identify and explore their surroundings. Then they enter the teething stage and they chew on everything.

We have one dog, a Belgian Malanois and I swear my 22 month old eats every piece of hair he can find. And even though I vacuum constantly, he stills finds it. It is frustrating and I hate it but I don't know what to do about it either! Good luck!

My daughter (almost 7) did and still does the same thing. Her Dr said it was just something she had to have. Sort of like a craving. Ever heard of women who crave ashes when they are pregnant, I imagine it is similar. For the most part if I see her with hair in her mouth I remind her to take it out. Wish I had some advise as to getting yours to stop. Daisy quit pulling her own hair out and eating it when seh was about 2 and half. Your doctor might have a suggestion.
