I copied all my photos and videos onto an external hard drive that I keep in my safe deposit box at my bank.
First of all, I am the least technology savvy person, so I truelly have no idea what I am doing here. We store all of our digital photos and videos on our computer at home, and I got to thinking if anything ever happened to the computer, I would lose all of my son and daughters pictures I have. How do I ensure that I won't ever lose my pictures? Do I store them on disks, flash drives, etc.??? Please forgive my ignorance! But HELP!
Thanks to all of you for your responses. I like the idea of using the Carbonite website and may actually try a disk or flash drive in addition.

You would probably want to buy an external hard drive that could store the stuff. They are pretty cheap (less than $100 for some decent ones) and would back up everything you have! :)
I transferred my photos to an external hard drive to make room on my computer, and then the external hard drive crashed! Bad experience! After that, I too signed up for Carbonite. It's a great online system that automatically backs up all your files, so you don't have to remember doing it or worry that your back up might be destroyed in a fire, tornado, etc. It also makes your files available to you from any computer, and makes transferring your files to a new computer a cinch. Can you tell I like it? And it's just $50 a year. My hands-down recommendation!
M., invest in gold archival quality DVD's for your pictures and videos. They hold a larger capacity than CD's and the archival quality will ensure that the disk will not deteriorate. I bought a spindle of 25 archival DVD's from Amazon.com for about $90. They are "guaranteed" to last 100 years whereas silver CD's/DVD's will oxidize and thus lose your data much sooner. The brand I have is : eFilm Archival Gold DVD-R~ The 100 year Disc. They are by Delkin Devices. Yes, the price is high but I take my photography very seriously and I want to ensure my digital photos are preserved. I also make a back up copy using the same kind of disks so I have TWO copies...if one fails, I have another one.
IF your computer crashes, sometimes, though not always, you can have your stuff restored. It's very, very expensive to do this as when my computer crashed several years ago, we spent $600.00 to have about 90 % of our stuff recovered. Also, it's a good idea to back up your computer once a month anyway.
I have a subscription to an automatic backup system called Carbonite (www.carbonite.com). Once it is set up, it automatically backs up every document, picture, and video file that you put on or update on your computer. Because it is backed up at a remote site (not your house) you don't have to worry about loosing your stuff in any kind of disaster.
I went to Archivers and bought their picture drive. They have different sizes that holds anywhere from 2000 to 8000 or more pictures. All you do is plug it in and it finds and copies all your pics. It was super easy to use and now I have a back up!
Buy an external hard drive and move them there.
I also have YEARS of pictures saved on Walgreens and Shutterfly...they're FREE!
I bought an external harddrive... then I connected it to my computer thru the USB and copied or moved ALL my photos and documents to that harddrive. Then I unplugged it and have it in reserve to add more as I put them on my computer for that same purpose you asked that question.
You NEED to have, and "external hard-drive" to back up all of these things and anything else that is important.
Storing them on disks, or flash drives are fine, but, if you computer crashes... you cannot boot up or re-install or troubleshoot your computer from these apparatuses.
Thus, you need to back-up, your computer and its programs etc.
Periodically.
This is, always the most ideal way, to back-up one's computer.
Or, some people back-up or store things on an off-site storage site.
Companies do this.
But again, if your computer crashes, you wanna be able to at least try and re-install or be able to at least try and start up your computer via 'safe mode', or be able to reconfigure and reinstall your boot up disk etc.
So, get an External Hard-Drive and back-up, everything.
Don't only think about 'photos'... but any other important thing on your computer.
And think about "What if my computer crashes?"
We just got an external hard drive, mainly to put all pictures and videos on... maybe music and some important files.
I too have years of photos on Walgreens, you have to order photos from them yearly to keep the photos there but with a kid it usually am uploading new photos and ordering at least every other month so it is ok for now. Honestly the safest place to back up is a harddrive, and it is super easy to hook it up and un hook it (desktop or laptop).
Oh M., you must back up! That happened to me, and I lost all my pictures from my daughter's first year. It still breaks my heart to think of it...
I put everything on CDs. Just pop a CD in, open it up, drag all your photo files in there, and bam, you've got it backed up.
There are websites now that back your files up for you automatically. One is carbonite, there are several. They cost money but not very much, and it is VERY worth it.
I have a subscrition to backblaze.com and they are great just sign up they get all the stuff you want backed up and give you the info whenever you need it. My brother works in internet security at Eset, they are global and highly recommend them as well for your internet security, but he recommends backblaze all the time for backing up photos and videos. After having 2 hard drives fail and losing photos of their first child they researched and found this company. I am using them as well and they are backing up all my precious photos, videos and music. It's important if anything happens to your computer. Just sign up and they do the rest. Two years is $95 not a bad price for saving those precious memories.
I do photography and always back up all of my photos on CD's, but that is just an extra precaution. I label them and have the CD's in an album just like you would actual photos, so if I need to take one out to make prints I can find it easily. Photobucket.com is free unless you use the professional one, and you can load photos onto there too. (also you can use all types of cool editing programs on that site for free as well) Another cool site for pictures (storage and editing) is www.picnik.com . They charge a very small annual fee, but it is worth it and all of your photos can be loaded there and stored there too. If there was ever an issue with your computer or even a house fire, you would still have access to all of your photos by using any computer. (this is true even if you loaded albums onto facebook) Good luck!
Store them on Disks- make sure they are marked. It is easiest if you go to your picture manager and change the size so they are not such large files you can save more at a time
Use a photo sharing site like Kodak. Upload everything and they will produce a disk of your photos. Obviously, you pay for that service, but if you're not a tech person, it's best to do it that way. You might also check Costco, Walgreen's, etc to see if they have that same service. They probably do. Do a price comparison to see who has the best deal and check for specials or coupons on those sites.
If you don't feel you hav ehte computer skill to use a separate hard drive and save your files - then use one of those online companies that will back-up your entire system whenever you're online. It costs about $60-$75 a year - but will save your files. I've now gotten to the point where every month or so I save my photos to a flash drive. I have about 3 years of photos on one flash drive - and when that filled up I bought another. I keep the flash drive in our fire-proof document box that also holds our will, deed to the house, car titles, etc. That way if the worst happens to our house we'll still have our photos digitally.
I have photos saved in Shutterfly--free unless you want to order some hard prints. I also have them saved to a flash. Not being a total techie, I had a little trouble with it but once I figured out how to get it loaded and save things, I was able to easily get things backed up to it. I bought a 4gb though will probably get a larger one next time. It was a saver when my old computer crashed because I even had my important docs like taxes saved on one. I keep a separate one for photos and one for important stuff like docs and letters. A coworker has an external drive and a friend has one of the sites mentioned by the other responses though I don't know which.
I am not techy savvy either but we have a service that backs-up everything for us...Can be expensive..However, in the meantime, I would certainly use a disk and flash drive if you can. I have done that and then store them in a fire safety box.
I store them on disks. I actually make 2 sets. One for the cd case and one is in the strong box. Forbid that we have a fire and then I have nothing. Alot of ppl that I talk to think thats a good idea and have begun doing that.
I have an external hard drive and it backs up automatically and also did put some pictures on CD's and then recently I got carbonite and it's doing a great job backing up in case the external hard drive would get destroyed in the house. Most computers will crash sometime and at some point so it's best to be prepared. Carbonite is not that expensive, not as much as buying an external hard drive even and I see someone gave you a reply about another company but I know Carbonite is highly recommended.
