So What Happened?

Well I am still not dialated. They are going to have me come into the hospital on Thursday evening and give me the gel I guess to ripen my cervix...then the pitocin on Friday...I'm scared but will just be glad when it's all over with and I have my baby :)

Be careful what you wish for. I went into labor on my own with my baby and was given induction drugs to "augment" my labor, which lead to a c section that I really did not want to have. I wanted to give birth to my baby and have that experience. The labor induction drugs were causing my contractions to be too strong when I was not dialated enough for him to be pushed through the birth cannal. I feel like I was robbed of an experience that I waited for all of my life. So, be careful.

First off congratulations! Your Dr may not be inducing you because youre body isn't ready. I had to get induced at 38 weeks because I had preclampsia and my body wasn't ready at all. My entire labor took 32 hours and I still wound up having a c-section. So unless your body has already started the labor process somewhat an induction can be a very long and unpleasant experience. Good luck with everything, I hope that baby comes out soon!!

If there is no medical reason to wait, tell him you want to schedule it NOW! he really shoudln't fight you on this, so I hope he doesn't (If you are ready). I was induced just one day after my date and I did it to insure that my doctor, who is wonderful, would be the one to delivery instead of his partners. Everyone has so many different stories. Induction itself isn't going to lead to a difficult labor IF YOUR BODY IS READY! Are you dialated and are you effacing?? If not, induction will do you no good. It will be very possible that they could start, it will do nothing for you and you will reach a point of no return that will take you to a super long time in the hopsital or c-section. If you are progressing, then you should have no problems. If your labor starts, who cares about pain. There is none if you get a epidural! I was induced at 7:30am and had my son at 7pm. Sounds like a long time, but I slept all afternoon! Epidurals Rock! I was very dialated and effaced already and it turns out, had started contracted (though I didn't even know it).
Don't assume that since you are past your due date, your body is ready. If you go to your appointment and nothing is happening, I would suggest you wait. Good luck and early congratulations!

Have you told the doctor that you want labor to be induced? If not, you should definitely do so. If he/she tries to tell you why you shouldn't induce labor, listen with an open mind. If the argument is weak, then press your point again. Say, "I understand, but I am in so much discomfort, I really want labor to be induced." Don't let them push you around or ignore your request.

Some people are telling you that inductions hurt, but let me just tell you from my own personal experience, I'd do it that way all over again. My Dr. asked me if I wanted to be induced because my husband was working out of town and I really didn't want him to miss the birth of our daughter. She induced me 4 days before the due date. They induced me at 10:00 am and I started feeling contractions around 12:30....they gave me an epidural around 1 or 2 and I had my daughter at 5:21. After I got the epidural, I felt NOTHING until well after midnight! My daughter was 7 lbs 4 oz and as healthy as they come! Good luck!

S.,
Congrats on your pending little one! How exciting! I know how difficult this time is. You are DONE with being pregnant and just want that baby out. The joy of pregnancy is no longer. I've been there, done that. And I did the induction thing with my first child. It was medically necessary because I had pre-eclampsia but if I had it all to do again, NO WAY would I have done it. I wound up with a 30 hour labor, in a hospital bed the whole time, followed by a 2-hour pushing session and an emergency c-section. The c-section was for other reasons (he was face up and got stuck), but the long labor was attributed completely to the induction. That's pretty common, unfortunately. I know how utterly exhausted you are right now and how "easy" an induction seems. But as you see from my example, it's not generally fun and games once the pitocin starts to drip. If you can do it, just hang on. The longer you wait, the more likely you are to have a faster labor induction-free. Best of luck. Hang in there. The fun is REALLY about to start :-) !!

normally doctors do not induce until after 42 weeks. i had inductions for both of my babies for medical reasons and it did not hurt, i was not in labor a long time maybe 2 hours of labor and 1-2 hours of pushing. everyone is different. good luck to you.

Tell your dr that your home a/c is broken and wont be fixed for x number of days... and has been out for x number of days. Worked for me Labor day weekend 2000, but it was the TRUTH!.... lol

Good luck!

I wouldn't be so quick to rush into an iduction. Induction births are often plagued by complications. My dr. scheduled an induction at 41 weeks and I should have refused. My son's birth was difficult. Give your body a chance to do things at it's own pace.

Please know that inductions HURT!!!! My first child I was in labor for 28 hours and with no pain medicine. My second child they induced me and that was the worst pain I felt. I could not handle it. The Dr. took me off the medicine. I would rather be in difficult labor for two days with no pain medicine than to ever be induced again. Look up natural ways to induce labor.A.
