How 2 Get the Rats to Go Away

my son -in -law bought some mega traps made out of plastic and have a hole in the middle so you can put the cheese or peanut butter and they have to dig for it and then WHAMO they are caught, maybe home depot has them.

Throw cheese into your neighbors yard :) No! Im joking.
They sell electronic devices you can plug in your outside outlets that the noise is suppose to hurt their ears & they won't come around. I guess it depends on the size of your yard if you can do that or not. Other than poison all I could suggest are get some cats. You could probably talk to a reputable farm supply, pest control, or the dept of agriculture, one of these could probably help you with a solution.

what an issue- I have heard of that before and infact the rats totally ruined one of my son;s cars in just a matter of one week end- don;t know the answer except- be sure you keep your yard and around the house mowed very short- and get some cats-
we live in the country where we have all kinds of varmits- we were swamped with rats and moles when we first came here but the addition to cats for the outside has totally cured the issue- for the past 8 yrs now- we have no rats or snakes around our home.

This is a very serious issue. Rats chewed through the wiring in my dad's car and it was a huge amount of money to fix it. It also happened to us, but the rat just chewed through the windshield wiper wires. You need to find where they are living. They like wood piles, old logs and other dark places. Get rid of thier sources of food (if you feed dogs outside, they love to steal dog food or bird food). You will be able to tell where they live because they make nests with torn up trash and leaves. Once you get rid of thier home and food, they will leave. If you have neighbors who have a pile of junk in thier yard, you may have a harder time getting rid of the rats and you may need to resort to poison. Good luck.

I asked a question about mice on this site a year or so ago. I cannot believe, in this day and age, that people would actually suggest a cat. Any vet or cat fancier will tell you that a cat actually has to have an incentive to chase mice. Not all cats are "mousers". The point of adopting a cat is to provide a loving, caring home and in return the cat provides companionship. A living, breathing animal is not to be used as your "cheap" pest control.
I would suggest a professional exterminator.

P.S. For what its worth, I am not a cat person. I dont own one, nor have I ever owned one. I certainly wouldnt buy or adopt one for pest control. Not to mention that an exterminator is WAY cheaper than a vet, which is where any responsible pet owner takes their animals for their health and livelyhood. I'm pretty sure the ASPCA doesnt promote adopting a cat so that people can control the varmit population.

They can definitely ruin the wiring in vehicles so you need to deal with this ASAP. I second the cat motion. We have barn cats and in the entire time we've lived in our home, I've seen one mouse. Good luck!

try pouring coke in shallow dishes or lids and place around various areas at night. They can't burp and blow up and die. My uncle used this technique and it worked great! His landlord was feeding his chickens at night and the rats would come out at night and eat the chicken feed. He had so many rats it would give you the creeps when you'd open the chicken house door at night, all you could see was their eyes! You would probably have to put out fresh coke each night. He also used some kind of honey bar bait that was good too. I don't remember the name of it but got it at a farm/feed store.

I'd keep a few hungry cats around and they problem will be gone.. Rats are dangerous and can gnaw thru wood and get into your home, as well, so be careful and keep your yard mowed and raked. Get rid of old wood piles, trash, old vehicles etc. Anything they can burrow into or under- needs to go! Much luck!

Call the city they should be able to help at no or very little charge.You did not say where you lived but our city has this service. Good luck.

This happened to us in two different houses, once in the attic, and again under our deck. Both times I called a company called Critter Control and they trapped all the rats and took care of the problem. They weren't cheap but they took care of the nasty little suckers without me having to be involved! The first time they were getting in through tiny holes in the attic walls so they sealed all those and we never had another problem. With the deck, we had to stop feeding our dog outside and then they didn't come back. Good luck!

Do you have a regular pest exterminator? I use Stout Pest control and am on their quarterly plan. They come out quarterly and spray for pests in the yard and in the house and use 'baby friendly' products. When we discovered we had rats, they came right out and brought a trap. By the next morning our little friend had gone on to another world and we called Stout and they came right out and took that little varmit away! We too were told that we had some field mice (or possibly only mouse) living in a notch in a tree and they said they had a packet of something they could throw in there to get rid of them. Fortunately, we didn't have to do that.

i watch the bonnie hunt show and she said the exterminator told her one of the trees in her yard needed to go because rats were living in it!

I must echo the cat suggestion! Full Disclosure: I am NOT a cat fancier. AT all.

However, we used to live where we had a barn, and we had river rats living in the barn. We also had field mice and such coming into our home's stone cellar. We adopted a kitten from the ASPCA, and he methodically eradicated the rats from the barn (and the field mice too!).
