Hot Tub - Seattle,WA

The house we are in the process of buying has a hot tub on the deck. The previous owners apparently haven't used it for years and stated in the contract that they do not know if it works. No I would not mind just ripping it out and using the space otherwise, but hubby of course would love to get it running and use it.
I have never owned a hot tub and was wondering how much $$ it would cost to get it back up and running and then keep it running.
Some details: it is probably 10 years old, no cover (it under gazebo type roof but does not have one of those tub covers), drained and looks clean. The entire house including the deck and the tub seem well maintained, but the tub is not covered by the regular home inspection process.
Have you ever purchased a house with a hot tub? Did you get it running or just get rid of it? And what does it cost to maintain a hot tub?
Thanks a lot!

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! We are buying the house regardless of the hot tub... the sellers won't have anything to with it. That's not an issue for us though - as I said if it was only me I'd get rid of it right away.
I will try to convince my DH to get someone to come out and give us an estimate. He is a tinkerer and would love to get it working himself... but I think once he notices that it's a couple of hundred $$ just for a new cover he may abandon those plans :)

My house came with a hot tub - at the time it was probably about 14 years old. I thought "What the heck am I going to do with a hot tub?" I was much more excited by the in-ground pool. Now, 17 years later, I use the hot tub far more than I ever use the pool. I keep it open all winter long and, for the most part, maintain it myself. There are pretty simple chemical kits for testing the water and the company I use for repairing the tub basically told me all I ever need is a PH balance chemical for whenever I refill the tub and bromide tablets to keep the water clean.

In my opinion, you will need a hot tub cover (especially to keep the heat in, and also for safety if you have young kids). They run anywhere from $400 - $600. You will probably also want to have a hot tub company come in and look it over and give you some advice before running it the first time. Since my tub is getting pretty darn old now, I usually have to have the repair company come in once a year to do minor repairs. I think I generally spend around $200/year for them.

For me, probably the biggest expense is the electricity to run the thing - something to keep in mind. Some people have units that run on alternative energies, but mine is electric.

Although my experience has been positive, my father had a terrible time taking on a used hot tub. The person he got it from had overdone the bromide which ate through a lot of the fixtures and they had also kept it in a rodent infested area, so many of the wires were chewed through. He poured a couple thousand into it and unfortunately had to dispose of it in the end. He does miss having a hot tub, though. They're great.

It cost my sister about 1000 to get hers up and running, but again, it depends what the issue is. I would get someone out to do a free estimate, most places will do this and I am sure the owners would ablige the request.

I can tell you we spend about $100 a month on electricity to keep it running and thats with a cover. Its worth it right now because our kids love it and we use it about 2-3x a week. Does it have a sleep mode? You can save money by keeping it on sleep mode but you need to turn it up a good two hours before use to have it warm enough. We really enjoy ours and use it. Its great family time. The maintenance is easy. We have not had to deal with repairs so I can only tell you that they do take a bit of electricity and therefore you will want to invest in a cover. Also with a small child you will really need to invest in a cover for safety reasons, even the above ground ones.

We just ought our 2 nd hot tub. Our old one was 12 years old and had a leak. We had a leak a few years ago and it cost $250 for the repair. We also had rodents living under the tub. Gross! The new ones are designed so rodents can't get under it and the filtering technology is better so we elected to buy a new one. We bought a 2011 model which saved us $1300+ tax:).
The hot tub dealer said it cost about $20 per month to heat it but our hot tub is well insulated with a great cover. It is my understanding that less expensive tubs cost more in the long run because of the cost to heat it.
We love over our tub! I feel like we are on vacation every time we are in it. It is certainly the best money we ever spent.
Our hot tub with out water weighs about 700 lbs I believe. If you are not replacing the tub it may be pretty pricey to get rid of especially if they have to remove a section of railing on your deck.

Have the deck inspected for strength to hold the hot tub when full. It will weigh a lot and if the deck is old it might not be safe. My sister has a hot tub and soaks in it nearly every night right before bedtime. She loves it. Doesnt care what it costs to run or for upkeep. Its worth it to her as she gets older. But if her deck was not reinforced the way it is, theres no way shed have a hot tub on it.

Would it be possible to stipulate that the hot tube be put in "good and working" order as a part of the sale?

Otherwise, you could check with some experts and get estimates and deduct the price of getting it going prior to the final sale.

The experts will be able to let you know what it takes to keep up maintenace on a hot tub. Most folks that I know do this on their own.
