Hormones vs Hysterectomy

I have been diagnosed with adenomyosis. Basically this means my uterus is growing but without a lovely little baby inside. It's sort of like endometritosis but backwards. Anywhoo- The Dr. has prescribed Provera and Motrin to take care of things for the next three months and then we'll talk again. What I've researched on-line says that the hormones will only mask the symptoms not cure the problem. In fact there is no cure. A hysterectomy is the only sure way to get rid of it. I would still keep my ovaries so there would be no need for the hormones after that. I'm 31 and I'm wondering if there are other young-ish moms who have had a hysterectomy. How did it go? Does it effect your sex life? Any bladder issues? I'm leaning toward the hysterectomy because we are done having children. I'm not upset byt this idea. I don't place my womanhood in my uterus. I'm thinking: no periods, no birth control! Woo hoo! But I want to be sure....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I've made an appointment for a second opinion. Not so much for the diagnosis but for how to go about treatment. I'm new to the area and the Dr. I saw...it was so bizarre! Like being examined by Frankenstein! His voice is very deep and loud. If you can just imagine "spread your knees apart. More. More." If he did not speak intelligently I would have thought there was something wrong with him... I could hear him tell the patient next door to refrain from having sex for a week. Then the vaginal sonogram! Oh my! The technician looked like she was driving a stick shift! If I was not so horrified I think it would've been pretty funny. Anyway...they gave me an uneasiness when thinking of Frankenstein and his staff performing a MAJOR surgery on me. I'll see the new Doc at the end of the month and will fill you in on what she advises.

I was 25 years of age. An I had a histo. I can tell you that with it I had no problems. Also the sex life was much better due to the fact that I had no worries about becoming pg. I am now 59 an with your ovaries you will still have a the hot flashes and meopause to go thru when you get older. But I can tell you that if I had to do it over again I would have done it again. Good luck with your life because it will be much better. B..

I can't really offer you a lot, but I think if I were in your shoes I would be thinking like you are about the hysterectomy. If you are done having babies, then why keep the plumbing? :P

Saying that. however, comes from someone who has never had it done. Good luck with your decision!

My mother had a hysterectomy when she was 40. They took everything as she had severe endometriosis. Based on what she went through, if you can keep your ovaries, by all means keep them! My mom wishes she could have. Trying to get her hormone medication balanced was a nightmare. She has never been the same since. She is convinced that things would have been easier if she had been able to keep her ovaries. Good luck in your decision. I'l pray for you.

It sounds pretty scary but it sounds like you are better off having the hysterectomy, especially if you are done having kids. I took hormones for 1 day every 2 hours when I was 21 because I couldn't stop bleeding and the hormones caused me to get hair in areas you wouldn't normally get hair. It's very embarassing. I know their is laser hair removal but just going to consult with someone about it is embarrassing in itself. Good luck! Hope you make the decision that is right for you.

Hi, M. m. Please check herbal meds before you decide. Get more than 3 opinions. And make sure it's your chart they're looking at. My sister had it real bad and she had an child she's 24. And she glad she waited, because the pregneancy helped. You're too young for this surgery. Research more we depend on other people to do it for us and we're all different. God bless take care. L.

I don't have much advice for you since I have never had a hysterectomy either, but I have the same delima you are facing. I am 31 with a 3 yr old girl. I have had 3 surgeries for endemetriosis, and have had an ovarian cyst. In April I had a blood clot in my lung, so they immediately took me off birth control, so my hormones are raging out of control. I still would love to have another child if I found the right man, but now the doctors are talking hysterectomy and I don't know what to think. I had prepped myself up for it, but now that it is getting closer to making a final decision I don't know what to do. So if you ever want to talk to someone you can contact me and we can discuss it together. Good luck with wahtever you choose.

my friend had a hysterectomy when she was like 28. She was also done with having children she started early. Anyway I don't remember the reason she had it done but she has a normal sex life and no bladder issues. She gained some weight afterwards but she has never talked about any problems that have been associated with it. But definately get some more opinions before you have it done, too many doctors want to have surgury instead of finding an answer to the problem. Good luck.
