Hormones in Cow's Milk

Hello fellow mamas,

My two small children have recently been significantly increasing their milk intake, and this has prompted me to seriously look into the issue of the effect on humans by hormones in cow's milk. I never really worried about it before, because my husband and I hardly drink milk at all (we're talking, *maybe* a gallon a week). But of course I want what's best for the little tykes, even if it means spending an extra $2-3 a gallon for organic.
The question is: what concrete information has anyone out there found about this? I'd love to hear what you all have found out, or any sources you could point me to. Also, what is the best deal on organic milk around Chapel Hill? :) Thanks!

What can I do next?

Thanks for all the responses. I appreciate everyone's personal stories. I was hoping to get more links to solid evidence, but maybe it's hard to find. I'll keep looking and let ya'll know if I find anything! :)

Good day M.,
My son is almost 2 years old and we use only organic milk. I don't know of any hard evidence, but we noticed that when we do "down grade" to traditonal milk, he is very moody and hyperactive. My son has been on organic for almost 6 mths. We drink to close to a 1/2 gallon a day, sometimes. We love milk! :) I hope this helps you. If you do find some hard evidence, can you please let me know. I would love to have the information. Have a great day!

Good Morning M.,

Organic milk is definately the way to go or even soy milk. My son and I enjoy vanilla soy milk. I cook alot with soy milk too. After clearing our house of toxic cleaning products that were causing asthma attacks and skin rashes to my other son and husband, I also streamlined into healthier foods- organic milk and/or soy. I don't have exact websites for the long term effects of hormones on our children- but I know that I have read enough not to want to take the chance on my children. The effects I read have been - earlier periods for girls, and the extra hormones can have drastic effects on both sexes reproductive organs- i.e. future problems conceiving.
other ingredients that I stay away from are Hydrogenated oil, Red and Blue Dye and Aspartame. If you have further questions, please feel free to email me back personally at ____@____.com Mangan

The September issue of Alternative Medicine has an article about early puberty. It said to "avoid all hormone-laden food" and chose raw or organic milk, hormone-free meat, and to "keep soy, which mimics estrogen, to a minimum."

My husband and I only buy organic milk. There are some products that are just fine to buy regular b/c the level of pesticides or hormones are not too high, but milk (and basically dairy) is not one of them. It really isn't too hard or too much more to get organic milk -- most regular grocery stores and even Walmart offers it now.

Even better than "organic" is something called "raw" or "fresh" milk, bought straight off the farm, straight from the cow... hasn't even been pasteurized. I researched the health benefits of this and it's tremendous, but not very realistic for us (or for most people). In some states it's not even legal! You will do just fine to get organic from the store. We buy Horizon. Good luck!

I usually buy whatever brand the store carries when I am shopping. Sam's club usually is cheapest for us by about 50 cents. The number one reason I give my daughter organic milk is because of all the reading I have done about early puberty as well. It makes sense, because of the vast amount of hormones the cows are given to lactate more often --- which leads to the 2 other reasons I buy organic milk...1)increased hormones to increase cow lactation leads to chronic mastitis in the cows (and for anyone who has breastfed and knows what mastitis feels like...it makes you feel sorry for the cow)....and 2) some believe that the constant antibiotics given to the cows for chronic mastitis is passed on in the milk, then passed onto the kids leading to antibiotics not working well in kids when they really need them.

It is more expensive, and my husband I still drink the non-organic versions - but it seems worth it for my daughter "just in case."

There is really no concrete info. I have read many an article and they say there is really no difference. It is all in what you believe. I go between organic and regular all time, since organic is more expensive. Oberweis.com (spelling, but google it and it'll give you the correct spelling) Oberweis has home delivery and they have the best chocolate milk.

This doesn't have anything to do with organic, but I wanted to tell you this still.

My friend's son started drinking a lot of milk. My friend didn't think anything about it, thought it was great for his growing bones.

After a while of drinking large amounts of milk, he became un-portioned. He was too skinny and very tall. The doctor said that he was drinking to much milk and it was filling him up so he was not "hungary" for solid food and to cut back on the milk.

Since then I have watched my 3 yr old's intake on milk. She loves it and yes, it is good for her. But I always make sure she eats her dinner too.

Just something to keep in mind...

One great source I have is a book called "Diet for a New America". A good friend of mine is a Naturopath in Florida and has also told me that the hormones, etc... in cow's milk is especially bad on female children and that this is one of the major causes in girls having breasts and menstruating so young due to all of the added hormones.

I personally spend the extra money on Organic milk for my family. My favorite brand is Nature's Valley - I much prefer the taste over Horizon and love the family company's philosophy and approach to organic farming.

I am the wife of Bennie, and mom of 2 girls Emma (2) and Ally (6 mo)and we just recently moved to Louisville, KY.

We started giving my child Organic Milk because she has reflux....no problems since. The whole food market has great deals on the milk especially the 365 brand. It is more expensive than regular milk but it has helped us enormously. We try to buy some meat from there but it is so expensive. I eat organic as much as possible. My friend is a nutritionist and she said if you have to choose what to buy organic....buy the milk. Also using organic lessens the chances of getting certain types of cancer. What they do to those animals...and the pesticides are just awful. Now that walmart is carrying organic I suppose grocers are figuring out people are willing pay the extra buck for it.

I trust that they don't shoot up thier poor cows because they are realy under the microscope! someone would have ratted them out by now! also soy milk is a good option my kids love soymilk shakes because they are thicker, I realy do think that all teh crazy hormones is to blame for why our poor little girls are starting thier periods at like 9 years old! and other things

We only buy Organic milk as well. The nursery school does not feed our daughter organic, so it is part of her diet, but a smaller part by far. It's worth the expense.

I haven't tried organic yet but i wanted to add to a commnent below on the intake of milk. Our doctor told us that after a child reaches the age of 2 the milk intake should be cut down and limit to 3 sippie cups a day! I guess too much milk can make your child become iron deficiant. I would definitely ask your physician before making any changes!

When I had to take a WIC class in TX, they never said anything about hormones in milk. They did say the best milk to drink was 2%. That's all I know.
