Honey Scare

Last week, I put the tiniest amount of honey in my 6 months olds cereal, maybe it was the very tip of a teaspoon. My father said my sister and I were always given it as babies in our food, on our pacifiers. Today, I read something about honey causing botulism and spores in a baby's intestines. I'm freaked now. It was the only time I used it and like I mentioned, it was a spec. But is that enough to be alarmed? Should I have him checked out? He would show some signs of being ill if he was sickened by it, right? He doesn't have any symptoms of being sick but that article really made me nervous. Does anyone have any advice?
Thank you,
N.

First of all, dont freak out! You gave it to him a week ago, and I am sure that if he had it you would know.If he hasnt had vomitting, diarrhea, dry mouth, weak cry, problems sucking, swallowing, eating, constipation, and abdominal cramping, discomfort I would think he is ok.If you feel like you want to have him checked, go ahead.Botulism most often comes from raw honey, and other uncooked foods. We shouldnt give our child honey for 2yrs.We all do things w/o thinking, and now you know.It was an honest mistake.Take a breath.

I am aware of not giving it to infants and young toddlers, but my understanding is that it's a risk, not a guarentee they will be exposed or develop illness. To ease your own mind, I would give your ped a call and explain what happened and ask what if anything you should do or be on the watch for. You should never hesitate to call your ped with even 'simple' questions. That's what they are there for. They will usually put you on with a nurse that can determine if you need to be seen and can give you feedback. Of course, it's best to make these calls during business hours and not call after hours unless you do have an emergency.

i dont have any advice but i hope all is well. and he would definitely have some signs of botullism poisoning. this is what the symptoms are:

The classic symptoms of botulism include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and muscle weakness. Infants with botulism appear lethargic, feed poorly, are constipated, and have a weak cry and poor muscle tone. These are all symptoms of the muscle paralysis caused by the bacterial toxin. If untreated, these symptoms may progress to cause paralysis of the arms, legs, trunk and respiratory muscles. In foodborne botulism, symptoms generally begin 18 to 36 hours after eating a contaminated food, but they can occur as early as 6 hours or as late as 10 days.

We're not supposed to give childrne honey until 3 yrs of age (according to our pediatrician). My girls are 29 months and have never had it and will not until they turn 3. the thing is signs of botulism may take a while (a couple of weeks) to show. but it is very rare that it happens, though it does. if i were hyou i would call the pediatrician tomorrow (monday) and tell them and see what they say.
