I take care of a little one that has such a hard time having a bowl movement...He turned a year old Jan.22...... Just wondering , I know little ones aren't supposed to have honey but what about foods that already have honey in them? Like the Honey Graham Crackers?

When my children were small we didn't have all the worries about foods as we do now..the
graham crackers were always a help for them...

Oh yeah... little guy has a texture thing with foods , but I have gotten him to eat a little regular oatmeal in the morning...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice....I do have a great relationship with Mom, kinda like a sceond mom as her's is in another state..we replaced the banannas with pears...yogurt and apples bind him....I have been feeding him oatmeal in the morning and he Loves that and the having graham crackers with lunch or supper...He has always loved his sweet potatoes and squash ..I think the biggest problem was at home he gets the same foods everyday...(banannas, apples especially)

I normally make bran muffins when I think my daughter hasn't gone enough. She helps make them and when she eats one she is in the bathroom :) You could try making smoothies with some soaked bran in it, that works as well.

1/2 tsp of karo syrup in some water will do the trick, within the hour he'll have a bowl movement, but you don't want to give this to him all the time. You need to introduce more foods with fiber in them to get his system going. Apples, yogurt (my son loved Yo Baby yogurt, you can find it in the organic refrig area), prune juice, 100% maple syrup is a natural lax maybe a little in his oatmeal in the morning.

Greetings B.,

Sorry to hear about the little one having a hard time...Try increasing his pure water intake...Add a little water to whatever he drinks.

Much success!

Love,
S.

The honey graham crackers are fine.

To help with the bowel movements, yogurt really is a great thing. If there is a real big problem that needs immediate attention, apple juice or prune juice. Pears also help.

Stay away from bananas and too many apples. Something in the pectin in the apples binds them up.

Also, make sure he is getting LOTS of water. Try not to give too much juice, just a few ounces to help get things moving. The extra sugar in the juice will help things move, but hydrating with water is the best.

You could also try putting a little olive oil in some of his food.

Hi B.,

Actually, children above the age of 1 are allowed to eat honey. And even if the little boy was under a year old, it would be okay to give him those honey-flavored crackers because they have been baked, which takes away the risk of botulism. Good luck!

My kids love watermelon. They have since before they were a year old. Watermelon has been very good at producing bowel movements - and it's great for them. Try that for the bowel movement issues.

As far as honey goes, I believe it's the raw honey that there may be allergy issues with as it is uncooked. You can check with a doctor, but if you cook with honey, such as in cookies, etc. - it should be OK.

I have 4 children and on my 3rd kid my pediatrician and I had the talk because of my hubbie. Children can have honey as long as its in a food like hony nut cherrios or grahmns. Just can't have spoon fulls of straight honey.

B.,

Usually, things like honey grahams are okay because only pasteurized honey is used and its baked in so it's been heated to a temperature that gets rid of food borne illnesses.

Grapes are another thing that you can try - cut them into pieces obviously, but a lot of those can help. Fruit in general is what my ped. always pushed if my kids had issues.

My little one had problems with bowel movements and we discovered that graham crackers helped her quite by accident! :) Fruit has been our main way to try to help (she has always been a big water drinker). We usually do fresh fruit but one canned fruit has been a big help been a big help - mandrin oranges. It may just be the suger that is helping her but I try to get lite and then rinse them before serving. Good luck! I watch 3 little ones under 2 and have a 1 yr old myself - what a treat to watch that age! :)

I gave both of my kids those and it was fine. I would also look into giving her some juice if she likes it. I buy the V8 fusion which is fruit and veggies in it and both my kids love it.

I would check with his parents to be sure they don't mind, but after they're a year old it's supposed to be OK to give them honey. Since this isn't pure / raw honey, I would think it would be even safer.
