Hello,

I was wondering if there are any homeschooling families near Keller, Tx who have young children. Our oldest daughter will be turning 5 in May - which means we will be starting soon! :0)

Looking for some advice on tools to use as well as some wisdom as far as the 'rules' of homeschooling in Texas!! We would like to use a christian based unit...

Looking forward to hearing from you!

God blless,
Kelly

Hi Kelly, I homeschool my 2 girls ages 6 & 5. Rules are pretty lax and there are a bunch of curriculum available, you just have to pick one that's right for you. I use Abeka for now. It's been great so far. My 6 year old initially went to public school during her K year but that was a disaster! The ratio is unbelievably high and as a mom who has immersed herself in her daughter's education, I got to see all the horrible things that go on in the school. A lot of bad behavior is tolerated. I won't go into details as that would be a whole other story... But for us, homeschooling has been wonderful and my daughter doesn't miss public school. For 'socializing' they are in a lot of other activities.

IMO Abeka is a good curriculum to consider, esp when you're just starting out. It's simple, effective, organized and you'll have everything you need -- if you purchase the entire 'K' kit. =)

If you'd like people to meet up with who have kids around the same age, I have a daughter who just turned 5 this month. We're homeschooling our kids (two girls 5 and 3, and another baby on the way in late Sept). I am working on my own curriculums, but with the new baby coming, I might just go and buy some more things instead:). I've done a little work with an Abeka book we've got and think that is how we'll go if I can't do my own thing.

There is a great place for homeschooling answers at this web address: http://centerforhomeeducation.com/ they have monthly "seminars" for new homeschoolers that only cost $15. They have ALL the answers you will need plus curriculum advice. In the state of Texas homeschool is looked at like a private school. I have a almost 5 (in June) so I will be starting soon as well. Good luck, I will be at the next seminar as well. My e-mail is ____@____.com if you want to connect. I live in Saginaw, Tx
