Does anyone have a good recipe for homemade ornaments that I can make with my two year old? I'm thinking of the kind where you make a dough, cut out a shape, bake it in the oven, and then paint it. All our family is in Arizona and we won't be seeing them for the holidays, so we want our daughter to be able to send them something to hang on their trees to remind them of her. Any suggestions? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I made these one year. I actually made small ones and when they were dried, I used them as tags on gifts...I used a permanent marker and wrote on the back. They were then used on that person's tree as an ornament!

Mix 1 cup cinnamon and 1 cup applesauce with 1 Tablespoon of white glue. You want a consistency that can be rolled with a rolling pin but not quite as sticky or it will stick to your counter! Sprinkle counter with cinnamon and roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. Cut a hole in shape with the straw so you will be able to hang them. Let dry about 24 hours. They shrink as they dry. Cut lengths of gold thread, make loops and hang. they will keep their scent for a few years. Refresh scent with cinnamon fragrance oil.

When I made them I put the ingredients in a ziploc and mixed it up that way. That might be fun for your 2 year old! Just make sure to use a straw to make a hole so that you can put ribbon through it to hang on the tree. Also, roll it out between 2 pieces of waxed paper...it is less messy and doesn't stick so much! You want to roll it out to about 1/4 inch...I did about 1/2 inch and they were really thick and took alot longer to dry!

They are really cute as Gingerbread people but I did a stocking, tree, and a star.

Have fun!

I don't have a great recipe for the baked ornaments, but I bought frosted ball ornaments that were plain white frost at Michael's. I painted them with the last name of the family, initials, motivational words such as believe, peace, or love, and or christmas sayings: noel, peace, joy.
I used enamel paint pens from Michaels and bought coordinating ribbon
and tied a small knot at top! it was so nice and our efriends loved it. You could personalize somehow with your daughter's help.

i recently went to a pottery studio with my 20month old son, got star ornaments, i picked out the paint colors and had him paint them. He painted the 8 in front of him and my arm, the table, chair while i was putting the other touches, I wrote his name and year. we both had fun. i was charged $6 per star, a definate keeper and inexpensive gifts from us.
