Homemade Formula and Reflux

I posted a question regarding making homemade formula because my son has severe reflux, I guess I should have said in my post that I have previously posted a question regarding my son's reflux. Let me clear a few things up...

My son has severe silent reflux, we have been to the hospital because he would stoped breathing. Yes, he is on medicine, Prevacid after trying Zantac which didn't work. We feed him upright, keep him elevated for at least 30 minutes afterwards, he sleeps elevated and ONLY lays flat to change his diaper. He is on Enfimil AR which is thickened with starch from rice because adding rice gave him abdominal pain. He goes to the chiropractor. No, UNFORTUNATELY I can not breastfeed him. BELIEVE ME I TRIED!! And it totally breaks my heart to know that breast milk is best for him and I can't give it to him. I don't need to go into the details, but let's just say that after pumping every two hours, taking lactating supplements, nursing, wearing a nipple shield and using a supplement feeding system so that he could nurse at the breast and still stimulate my milk supply just dried up. It is dumbfounding to both me and the lactation consultant that I was working with. Did I mention the engorgement that I had twice and the mastitis (spelling?) that I had? Oh, my daughter is potty training. So while I appreciate the info on breast milk, I simply don't have any. And I don't think that I could emotionally "go there" and try to build up my supply again. And unfortunately, he was refluxing while being breastfed.

I was just curious to know if anyone had made formula and if anyone had any resources. I am at the end of my rope and I feel at this point the best thing for him is to make my own. I do know that the raw milk is lacking many nutrients and I will be adding them so that he is well taken care of.

I apologize if I am coming off too strong. I guess I should have put more background info in my recent post.

Does anyone have any resources on how to make homemade formula?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded with so much support. I am happy to say that I think that I have found something that works. I went to a farm and bought raw organic cow's milk and got a recipe for homemade formula. I am adding ingredients to make sure that he is getting the nutrition that he needs. He has been on the new formula for 3 days now. The prevacid seems like it might be helping finally. He is off of the heart monitor now. :) He is sleeping better now. His BMs are regular and look like breast milk BMs. I would encourage anyone who would like to make formula to do so. Do your research and go for it. Don't listen to the nay sayers find people who will encourage you and be able to answer questions. Do what is best for your baby. This process has made me realize all the more that when it comes to my kids, I don't care what anyone says. I will do what ever it takes, no matter how crazy it looks, to take care of them. If you would have told me 2 months ago that I would be making my own formula I would have laughed at you. Thank the Lord that he is getting better. I know it will be a process but we are on the right track now.

Sorry to hear about the reflux/breastfeeding issues. Let me just say, which you already know, that formula fed babies grow up healthy, smart and strong too. My son was put on zantac when he was a week old. It worked, but only for a week. He was then switched to prevacid. It took at least 4 weeks to really have an effect on his reflux. Finally when he was about 41/2 months old, we started him on rice cereal (first in his bottle because he DID NOT like it). Around that time, we also stopped the Prevacid. Now at 81/2 months old he is doing great. I searched google, but didn't have a lot of luck finding home made formula recipes. Good luck!

Sorry, never heard of home-made formula, but my daughter had severe reflux and at almost three, still takes Prevacid. We ended up using Elecare formula and it was a miracle how everything changed overnight. It is a prescription formula, but we bought it on ebay...much cheaper! Maybe something to talk to dr about. Sounds like you are a great mom! Good luck!

I think Dr. Mercola has a homemade formula recipe that uses raw milk. His website is mercola.com. I have not really looked at his recipe, but one of my dr mentioned it.

S., bless your heart...you do sound like you are at wit's end! I can tell you that my own daughter suffered from pretty severe reflux/colic from the age of three weeks, until she was five month old. I know how stressed out (and likely sleep deprived) you are, but this is probably going to improve on it's own...it just takes time.
And don't feel bad about the breastfeeding, my daughter was breastfed and had this same problem anyway. However, breast milk is best, and there are alternatives. For instance: did you know that you can buy breast milk? I know that may sound creepy, but it wasn't that long ago that having a "wet-nurse" was a common practice for the more affluent. There are women who do this professionally, but I must warn you that it is not an inexpensive alternative.
If that's not an option for you, there is a homeopathic remedy called ColicCalm. I've never used it myself, but it seems to be fairly popular.
And finally, down to the business of making formula: While I can't provide you with a specific recipe, I would encourage you to avoid using cow's milk as it can often make the reflux worse. The reason you are having trouble finding home-made recipes is because it is largely discouraged for a child under the age of one as it is difficult to meet all of their nutritional needs this way and it can result in anemia and other deficiencies.
Try using an elemental or soy based formula instead.
Soy based: Enfamil ProSobee, Similac Isomil, Nestle Good Start Supreme Soy
Elemental: Nutramigen, Pregestamil and Alimentum (these are especially good for infants with food allergies)
There is also a support group for people dealing with your situation by the name of "PAGER" (Pediatric/Adolescent Gastroesophageal Reflux Association).
Look, I know that this is not exactly the answer you were looking for. I wish I could give you a recipe, but the simple truth is that most home-made recipes will only make his reflux worse as they will contain protiens and acids that he just can't process yet. I'm truly sorry, and I do understand your frustration.
Good luck to you all, and I hope your little one is feeling better soon.

Recipes for Homemade Baby Formula
Many of the ingredients for these recipes are available from
Radiant Life, 888-593-8333, www.radiantlifecatalog.com

MILK-BASED FORMULA
Makes 36 ounces

Our milk-based formula takes account of the fact that human milk is richer in whey, lactose, vitamin C, niacin, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to cow's milk but leaner in casein (milk protein). The addition of gelatin to cow's milk formula will make it more digestible for the infant. Use only truly expeller-expressed oils in the formula recipes, otherwise they may lack vitamin E.

The ideal milk for baby, if he cannot be breastfed, is clean, whole raw milk from old-fashioned cows, certified free of disease, that feed on green pasture. For sources of good quality milk, see www.realmilk.com or contact a local chapter of the Weston A. Price Foundation.

If the only choice available to you is commercial milk, choose whole milk, preferably organic and unhomogenized, and culture it with a piima or kefir culture to restore enzymes (available from G.E.M. Cultures ###-###-#### or http://www.gemcultures.com).

2 cups whole milk, preferably unprocessed milk from pasture-fed cows
1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (See recipe for whey, below) Note: Do NOT use whey from making cheese--it will cause the formula to curdle. Use only homemade whey made from yoghurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
4 tablespoons lactose*
1/4 teaspoon bifidobacterium infantis**
2 or more tablespoons good quality cream (not ultrapasteurized), more if you are using milk from Holstein cows
1 teaspoon regular dose cod liver oil or 1/2 teaspoon high-vitamin cod liver oil*
1 teaspoon expeller-expressed sunflower oil*
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil*
2 teaspoons coconut oil*
2 teaspoons Frontier brand nutritional yeast flakes*
2 teaspoons gelatin*
1 7/8 cups filtered water
1/4 teaspoon acerola powder*

*Available from Radiant Life 888-593-8333, www.radiantlifecatalog.com
**Available from Natren 866-462-8736, www.natren.com, or Radiant Life 888-593-8333, www.radiantlifecatalog.com. Also, please note earlier versions of this web page called for 1 tsp of bifidobacterium infantis--this was a typo.

Add gelatin to water and heat gently until gelatin is dissolved. Place all ingredients in a very clean glass or stainless steel container and mix well. To serve, pour 6 to 8 ounces into a very clean glass bottle, attach nipple and set in a pan of simmering water. Heat until warm but not hot to the touch, shake bottle well and feed baby. (Never, never heat formula in a microwave oven!) Note: If you are using the Lact-Aid, mix all ingredients well in a blender.)

Variation: Goat Milk Formula
Although goat milk is rich in fat, it must be used with caution in infant feeding as it lacks folic acid and is low in vitamin B12, both of which are essential to the growth and development of the infant. Inclusion of nutritional yeast to provide folic acid is essential. To compensate for low levels of vitamin B12, if preparing the Milk-Based Formula (above) with goat's milk, add 2 teaspoons frozen organic raw chicken liver, finely grated to the batch of formula. Be sure to begin egg-yolk feeding at four months.

I feel your pain, and I am sorry that you are having such difficulty with this. All four of my children were lactose intolerant and had problems with reflux. For the oldest three, changing to a soy based formula helped.

For the last one, he was lactose and soy intolerant. He kept sinus problems, and finally our pediatrician recommended that we take him to an allergy specialist. The sinus problems were caused by reflux. We end up using a formula called alimentum (made by similac), and changing the way that we fed him. To every bottle, we had to had cereal (1 tablespoon per ounce). Instead of a whole bottle at a time, the allergy doctor suggested feeding him no more than 4 ounces at a time, burping after every ounce. After two hours, he could have another 4 ounces. The doctor also said to avoid things with apple in them, as this makes things worse. So, cereal with apples and bananas or apple juice were out.

Here is an article with some good tips for easing reflux. http://ezinearticles.com/?10-Tips-for-Easing-Reflux-When-...

You also might want to have your son checked to see if he has Pyloric Stenosis. My nephew has this as a newborn and it was first misdiagnosed as reflux. My sister kept persisting that something was wrong with her son. When the doctor refused to listen, she took her son to the emergency room and demanded that he be seen. He was operated on the next day, and gained four pounds in the next two weeks. Here is an article on Plyoric Stenosis. http://www.eapsa.org/parents/resources/pyloric.cfm

Good luck with everything.

(I tried every medication, prescription and herbal, and my lactation consultant said that sometimes it just doesn't work out.) I don't have any info. on homemade formula, so I am sorry I can't offer you any help there. I just wanted to let you know that there is at least one other person who understands what you are going through. (My son had terrible reflux for a long time.) Hope this helps. Good luck!

I know it may sound crazy in this day and time but, I will say it anyway. When my mom was younger and had my oldest sister she was having a lot of the same problems you have expressed. Of couse in those days they did not have the medical knowledge about reflux as we do today. My sister was losing weight couldn't sleep or keep anything down because of it. An old Farmers wife that lived across the way had heard through the town gossip the problems my mom was having and brought my mom some fresh cows milk still warm but skimed of the cream. Well my sister is 60 now and very healthy and my mom was extremely grateful to the old farmers wife. It worked like magic and she began to grow and sleep and became very healthy for the rest of her life. Sometimes I think all the preserveative in things are what is making the problems. Couldn't hurt to locate a local dariy and see if you could give it a try. May be just what the doctor ordered. I know my mom swears by it.
Good luck and God bless ya. I truly respect the fact you are a SAHM your children will truly benefit from it even though the sacrfices are great financially and sometimes emotionally for the Mom. Keep up the good work and know someone out there is very proud of you.

Hi Stacy!
I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I know about reflux with my twin boys, specially with one of them who was born with a clef lip and palate, which made is so much dificult...the matitis and dificulties breasfeeding? I had 2 of those and frankly, I think they are worst than the pregnancy ups and downs and child labor and birth ALL combined! Is definately horrible! and I know how fustrated you mast feel, specially when there is so much pressure now days to breasfeed and a lot of guilt if you don't do it...well...don't feel the presure DO NOT feel guilty! You tried it didn't work, it doesn;t work for everybody and there has been option in the past and present for the woman that cannot do it.
Now, this are my two cents, based in my experience with reflux, and the recomendations of my GI for the twins, we sterted them on Good Start formula. I had tried with my first child, NUTRAMIGEN, which has predigested proteins (remember, reflux is caused by an inmature digestive system, that has a hard time digesting the proteins in the milk), Nutramigen was great for him back them, but is was SO expensive, so when I asked the Dr about giving this to the twins he said that Good Start works JUST AS WELL OR BETTER, so I asked why nobody told me that before, and it has a lot to do with contracts that companies make with the hospitals,(specially with Enfamile and Similac)so althaugh, Nutramigen is awesome, Good Start is the same. SO now, the results were amazing with the twins, specially with Franco( the one with the cleft), it didn't resolved it overnight, I have to say, but continuing the same rutine, armed ourselved with patience and feeding them that formula worked worders in no too long of a time. We did start rice cereal when they were 2 weeks old and that helped a lot too, their formula was VERY thick at one point. (we started with 2 tps per oz the first few days and went up to 4)
Now about the homemade formula, I have no experience nor I hadn't heard about it until now, but I am sure you can find the guidance of a nutritionist, or lactation consultant and your gi dr, I am sure they have seen every case in the book. I agree with fact that you can't ignore completely with what the dr sais, BUT I also think that you must find one that makes you feel helped and also gives you options, time is of the escence, as days fly by and he needs to eat.
I am sorry I don't have an instant solution, but I wanted to let you know that I understand how you must feel and also, encourage you in these moments.(Our GI doctor for the twins is DR Patel at Children's, Scotthis Rite, he has twins of his own and sees a lot of patients with Cleft Lip and Palate, for whom reflux is a BIG problem, he was really helpful)
Hung in there and I wish you THE BEST!

How old is your baby? My friend had twins that both suffered from a over tightened muscle at the opening of their stomach (I can't remember what they called it). It took an scan to discover it. Once they had surgery they did not spit up (projectile vomit) any more.

I don't have your specific issue but I did have a friend who personally grew up with the same problem and goat's milk is all he can drink still to this day. Hopefully, the pediatrician can give some guidance as well. Good luck I see this must be a very hard issue to find information on.

You sound so very desparate, so first relax....take a deep breath.... And let me tell you a story. Many years ago, before there was Enfamil and Similac, etc., there was Carnation or Pet milk (can) and Karo syurp. I do not remember the total recipe, but I think it was one can of water to one can of milk and a tablespoon or two of syurp. It would be stirred and brought to a boil, sat a minute, poured into bottles, and that was formula. And we all lived healthier, normal lives without the 'nesiums, 'phates, et el. The end.
On another note, my daughter, who did breast feed found her son who had some allergies, so she opted to use Carnation formula because it was closer to breast milk. He yet has allergies, but he could, at least, tolerate the formula.
Relax. Do not give up, you will find a solution.

Hi S.,

Go to http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2005/1...

There are several links within this link for recipes. I know colic is horrible and most medical doctors only treat it with synthetic meds like Previcid and Mylicon that actually cause rebound effects and make it worse the next time around. I know because my second daughter had awful colic and wish I had known then what I know now. Most doctors treat baby colic like adult acid reflux. Both are wrong!

See if there is a naturopathic doctor in your area that has some expertise, if not, there are plenty in downtown Atlanta. I'll send you names if you can't find one. Also make sure your chiropractor is an upper cervical specialist. Chiropractic is wonderful but that particular specialty will help more.

Also, some Moms have told you to use Karo Syrup in the formula recipe. Corn Syrup is just as dangerous as honey is to infants. It can cause botulism which can be fatal. The colic is a sure sign that their stomachs are not ready to handle honey or corn syrup.

Hope I helped! God bless!

M.

Stacy,
I hear you on the reflux. My son had it and he couldn't/wouldn't breast feed either.

My daughter had it some, but not nearly as bad as my son.

What I did for my daughter was put her on Pregestimil formula. It has predigested enzymes that really helped her with the gas, reflux and digestion of her formula. She was on this for 1 year and then I went back to a milk based formula to wean her off of formula. So my daughter had a bottle for 18 months instead of the one year rule.

I am sure you have tried most of the over the counter things, but mylicon drops worked best for my daughter.

I will keep your family in my prayers for this serious feeding problem to heal.

Grace and Peace,

Whatever you do, keep going to the chiropractor!! My husband (Chiro MD) says that the reflux and not breathing often has to do with the misalignment of the babys atlas- so getting him adjusted regularly is a key thing to do. Try the Weston Price website other people have mentioned- my son is breastfed now (I know how agonizing it feels to not be able to provide that- it took us three months to get to the point where breastfeeding is ok!), but I have seriously thought about using their recipe if I ever need to supplement. I you do use it, be sure to post how it is working for you!

I do know what it's like not to be able to successfully breastfeed, which happened with my first, and it felt AWFUL and I put myself through much more guilt at the time than I deserved. So don't you do that! All I can add is that my friend's daugter had reflux and I don't know if it's the same as your situation but the only thing she could drink was Nutramigen (spelling??)... and as another poster said, it IS expensive but I remember her saying her insurance paid for it, or part of it, since her doctor said she needed it. Good luck to you. I can't say I've ever heard of anyone making their own formula.

The nerves that supply information to the area responsible for reflux exit the spine and quite often the birthing process is extemely taxing on you ....but also on the baby. Sometimes it is not what he might be eating but that there is nerve interference causing there to be a response of reflux. I would be happy to talk to you more about it.... I understand your frustration. My son had severe reflux when he was born. He was placed on both Zantac and Previcid. I also wanted to breast feed and tried everything from tube feeding to cup feeding to nipple shields to pumping. First, I give you a lot of credit for being honest that it just isn't working. I felt a lot of guilt b/c I couldn't and I think there is so much emphasis to breast feed even though sometimes it doesn't work. Thank you for saying this!!!!

In regards to the formula, we ended up using the Enfamil AR. I would feed my son and then have him propped up afterwards in the bouncy chair or in his crib. I have a friend with twins who ended up having a bariatric scope (sp?) and surgery to help with the reflux. Her boys were then placed on Nutramigen Lipil by Enfamil. This is an expensive formula, but she discovered that her boys also had severe milk allergies. You may want to see if your pediatrician wants to examine this possibility.

I wish you the best of luck with your research and hope you find the information you need.

I don't have any advice on homemade formula but this sounds exactly what my daughter (who is turning one this weekend) went through a year ago. I breastfed her too and she loved it minus the fact she would choke from severe reflux. Finally the prevacid worked. We had to do all the "tricks" you are doing so don't feel so alone. It goes away. Regardless my breast milk also didn't help matters with the reflux even though when I tell people that they sometimes act as if I'm lying. Believe me it didn't help. I breastfed her exclusively for 3 months and she was extreme reflux. Anyway don't feel guilty about that. You don't need to explain to people why you aren't nursing. As far as formula, we have found great success with soy. Infamil similac soy. It really was the only one that she keep down the best. We tried the formula you are using now and I didn't feel it made a difference. So try the soy, maybe it will help. And remember...I was there just a year ago and now my daughter doesn't act as though she ever had reflux; amazing to me.

Have you tried Enfamil Nutramigen formula. Nutramigen is a hyperalergenic formula and it is very gentle on the stomach of infants who have milk alergies and sensitive tummies due to other disorders. I use it becasue my son has a milk alergy, but I have a friend who's baby also has severe reflux and she uses the medication along with Nutramigen. Per the docotrs advice, she also puts a litle single grain rice cereal in the formula. I thniks it's one teaspoon per 4oz of formula.

I was fortunate to be able to breastfeed my son without any problems, but a very close friend of mine was not, and I know how hard it was for her to deal with the fact that she was just unable to do it. Harder still were the looks and comments she got from other moms who didn't know her story and couldn't understand why she wasn't nursing. I am so sorry that you had to deal with comments about this, because I know how hurtful it can be. Good luck finding a solution for your little one!

I left you a personal message the other day being that I was in a rush. As I explained my daughter went through the same thing. She was in and out of the hospital for the first few months. After the third or fourth time everything was under control. She was on 15mg of Prevacid which was the highest dose for her weight and size and Reglan which helped with the digestion of her food. We had to sit her up for at least 1/2 hour after feedings to keep the food down. Even when she slept she was always at in incline.
She had monthly visits with her GI doctor to monitor weight gain. As she got older, the gag reflex strengthened and she grew out of it. Now she is 4 years old and healthy!

I am really wondering why you want to go to the trouble of making homemade formula. Many of the brands on the market are a great alternative to breastmilk. They have been designed by nutritionists and chemists and biologist (problably) who understand the complexity of nutrients and molecules that go to make up a child's primary source of nutrition. My son had severe reflux and was allergic to breastmilk to boot. I used a store brand of formula and he has been just fine. In fact he has caught up in size with his peers (he was premie).

I don't know about a formula like whole milk but my babies were on carnation and kayro! You mentioned a Chiro Dr.! Is that the only Dr. you are taking him to? They try to treat most all illness but I'm not convinced that they are qualified for everything. I could tell scarry stories! True but scarry! Maybe you need to find a older peditritian! And some GP's treat kids. You might email somone at the Pet milk company and ask for a recipe! It worked many years before infamil and we are here to prove it did the job!!!

Hi Stacy!

I am sorry that you and your son are having to go through this reflux ordeal. I am a mother of 5 and when my children suffer it is very frustrating, especially when it concerns their nutritional intake. I have one son that refuses to eat anything outside of carbs and sugar. It appears to be somewhat of a texture or control issue. We are supplementing and working on this problem presently.

Changing your sons formula unfortunately won't remedy the underlying problem with reflux. The meds aren't helping much either obviously. If you would like some real help with your situation to alleviate/illiminate your sons suffering naturally and provide vital nutritional support/digestive aid along with it, I am available for consultation at ###-###-####. BEST WISHES!

i have no info on homemade formula - never even heard of it! i'm sure it's out there though. i have a friend whose daughter had reflux as severe as what it sounds like your son has, so i just wanted to encourage you. i remember what she went through with nursing, and subsequently not being able to nurse (breastfeed) and i know how emotional it was for her. i hope you find the resources you're looking for. maybe if you start looking at health food stores and alternative medicine practicioners someone will have something.

Have you tried giving him a soy formula? It is much easier for babies to digest. My son has reflux as well and it has worked really well for us. I would also start putting cereal in his bottles if you haven't already. The cereal thickens the formula which also makes it easier to keep down. I know it seems early but you might try giving him some applesauce with cereal in it. My son's doctor had him on 3 meals of baby food a day at 4 months because of his reflux. Are you still burping him every 1/2 to 1 ounce? That sometimes helps to. Whatever you do, do not let them put him on Reglan. Keep with the Prevacid. Reglan is known for causing tremors in babies. My son was on it for a week and start having tremors. Talk about horrifying. I hope some of this helps. I don't really know very much about home made formula but you might try www.babycenter.com if you haven't been there already. Lots of good advice there too.

You will not be able to come close to the nutritional content of commercial formulas. They are extremely well researched and come quite close to breast milk.
When your baby is ready to start solid foods, you can certainly make these yourself. There is a wonderful book called Super Baby Food that tells you everything you need to do it.

Why on earth does your baby go to a chiropractor? Spinal "adjustments" are unnecessary for a baby and potentially very dangerous.

I am jumping on this post late, so I hope not to be repeating something you have already responded to, apologies in advance. I do not have any resources on homemade formula, but if it is something that you were comfortable with, there are breast milk banks. The milk is screened very well to assure its safety. One problem of going with this route is if food sensitivities or allergies are an issue the donors diet can be an issue. Children's Hospital of Atlanta should be able to assist with a reputable bank. I know they use banked milk at times on their premature infants in the NICU. Good luck, I am sure this has been very stressful for you.

If I may ask how often is your child getting adjusted and how if you know? I am a chiropractor and fortunately have not had to go through this with my own children but I have seen this in my practice and have gotten really good results. Also how old is he and what all is he eating other than formula? Unfortunately there is really nothing to help and the fact that the medication has not helped it appears that there is something with his nervous system going on. I do understand no sleep because I have 2 that don't. It also sounds like his body is trying to reject something whether in the medicine, the formula, etc. I understand the problems with the breastfeeding, but he may be having a reaction to some of the ingredients in the Enfamil. Alot of those ingredients are way over processed and in fact there is generally genetically modified products in there. I would try to find some of the organic formula or ask your pediatrician to maybe recommend another one. I will do some more research to see if there is anything else, but keep me informed and I will do all that I can do.

Dear Stacy B.,
It sure sounds like you have tried nearly everything. You need to be very careful when considering making your own formula. Even the formula companies struggle to come up with a nutritionally sound infant formula. I doubt your son would do better on homemade formula and you could jeopardize his health and brain development. Have you considered contacting a breastmilk bank? There are special organizations that store donated breastmilk for babies who can't tolerate formula. You can try a Google search to find one near you. I hope you find a solution. S. R.

Have you tried tapping into the breast milk banks that some local hospitals have? I know that your question was about making your own milk but this may be a viable option for you and your son.

Have you tried organic baby formula. I used this one with my daughter when I went back to work and couldn't keep up with the breastfeeding. http://www.naturesone.com/index.php and there is another one, http://www.earthsbest.com/products/infant-formula.php. I found the Baby's Only at Whole Foods and Amazon. Earth's Best I've seen at Kroger. That would probably be easier than making your own and perhaps they would work. There is a soy version too.

Good luck.
