Homemade Christmas Gifts? - Wichita,KS

Keeping with the frugal theme does anyone have ideas for homemade Christmas gifts? Looking online I saw some cute ‘tea cup candles’ (clearly for women), some shaped crayons made from melted down old crayons (for children obviously). I’m looking for something geared towards anyone, but I prefer not to go the baked goods route. Do we really need more sweets during the holidays? LOL One year the kids and I painted the American Flag on wood planks with signing on the back the year of the Christmas. Everyone seemed to enjoy those (they still hang in family’s homes). Another year I took cheap ivory soap bars and cute Christmas pictures from Christmas wrapping cut them to size then paraffin waxed the image over the soap for a decorative soap. I just don’t know what to do this year that will be affordable and sensible. Best wishes to all of you & again, thank you for your inputs!!!

There are jar gifts that can be filled with ingredients. Many are for sweets which wouldn't work for you, but you can fill them with soup ingredients or other meal ideas.

I agree with GrammaRocks. FLEECE. We have made blankets for everyone. It takes about 1 to 2 yrds depending on the size of the person. Cut fringe on each edge and then tie in knots. You can even get two matching colors and tie them together. I made scarfs with the leftover pieces. Fun, easy and not very expensive.
Have fun!

My go-to gifts this year are fleece scarves. Even here in SoCal there will be days to wear them so they work for anyone. I made several for one of my granddaughter's birthday a couple of weeks ago, whipped them out while watching TV and talking with my little guy, and one of my other granddaughters begged me after the party to make her some. She doesn't know I already planned to give her one with the fleece blanket I'm making her, and now I will more than likely make her a few more. I've been getting my fleece @ Joann's and paying from .75 cents to no more than $2 a scarf, (even the Christmas patterned one) and I understand that Walmart sells it as well.

The ones I made and that work for anyone are No Sew Fleece Scarves. They take 7" - 9" (1/4 yd) of fleece for each, and all you do is trim the edges, cut fringe and tie the strips in knots. You can pick and match the fabric to the person's personality or likes or favorite color, and for some friends of mine in NY I'm using the same plaid pattern on his and hers, just leaving the fringe untied on his. Here's how to make them:

And, if you want to go fringier for a girl, teen or grown woman you can make one with 3 layers of fleece, sew on a machine or by hand through all 3 layers right down the middle, and cut fringe down each side, so cute! (I just saw some pictures of my 16 year old granddaughter in Germany and she was wearing one!)

I have mentioned in a couple posts that I have made flavored coffee, creamers and syrup. Super cheap and easy and everyone loved them.

This year I'm making flavored popcorn salts.

I have also made Puppy Chow for my hubby's clients and that is always a big hit.

If you or anyone else wants the recipes, just message me your email address and I will send them over! =)

For kids gifts It's easy to make rag dolls.
You can use scraps of cloth, old sheets or pillow cases, embroider a face (safer than button eyes for young children) and yarn for hair.
Our Nanna use to make them for us and she used dryer lint, and old nylons for stuffing.
You can also use cotton from medicine bottles.
If you make them large enough you can use old baby clothes as doll clothes.

Get a section of picket fence and take the pickets off. You can paint each picket as a santa or a snowman - super simple...
Get a 4x4 block of wood, paint it white, put a fleece hat on it with a snowman face and you're done.
Ditto for a Glass block - especially if you put a light behind it - very cute!
I am crocheting scarves and blankets this year...
Another easy thing is Fleece hats -- Make a tube, tie one end... done.
You can make mittens out of old sweaters...
Bath salts are easy - mason jar, epsom salts, food coloring, and a drop or two of an essential oil...
Go on Pinterest.com and look around...

This year, I think I am going to make small, classy looking ponchos out of suede fabric and cutting fringe around the edge, (easy b/c they are no sewing). Supposed to be really easy and cute! Kind of like this, but less fringy and costume looking:

My kids love to spray paint pine cones and then put glitter over them. The wrap them in colored plastic wrap and give them as gifts. For the grandmothers they spray painted baskets from dollar tree & filled the baskets with the pinecones. Every year they get to see the baskets and pine cones displayed in everyones homes.

We make herbal bath bombs every year... bath fizzies. Soap and bath salt. The soap can be made using more manly scents. If they are single then they might appreciate guest soaps. I make cards and put them in stacks of 12 tied with ribbons. I have done no sew blankets. I made Welcome signs one year with cardstock, and $3 picture frames. What about soup in a jar or brownies... or make dog biscuits if they have a dog. There are recipes all over for healthy foods to make. I did a French Market Soup in a canning jar one year and have received several as gifts love them.. I have made specialty breads before. The usual sweet stuff, cookies, candy. One year did a special trail mix in a cannister that could be used in the persons kitchen. I have made necklaces and bracelets. small scrapbooks for grandparents or aunts and uncles.... wow so much so little space. hope this helps, happy crafting, questions... contact me. I always love talking crafting.

I love to decoupage. Anything and everything! ModgePodge is magic in my book. One year I covered a round hat box with victorian images, hearts, birds, lace, cherubs etc. I gave that to my mom with a little stack of duplicate family photos. She loved it. Cost me like $3. When she passed away the whole family sat around and looked through all the pictures she had filled that hat box up with. Now I have it and will pass that silly box down to my daughter one day.

A cute idea for little girls is the bow keeper. You can buy wooden letters from craft store. Decorate the girls 1st initial and hang two wide ribbons from it to attach bows to. You can also buy a round circle and make it a face. Hang ribbon down to look like hair that bows will be attached to.

I am thinking of going to a craft store and buying unfinished picture frames and then getting paint & small objects to glue onto them for personalized frames (more for kids than for adults).

There are also unfinished wooden boxes you could get to make little jewelry boxes, which I may do for my little cousins, and then get some stencils to put on their initials

I wrote a reply to a similar question earlier this week... the thread is: http://www.mamapedia.com/questions/11881534104610734081 .
