S.W.
I made my son's babyfood from the time he was 5/6 mo until he was at least a year. I now have a 3 mo old and will make hers as well.
It's so much fun, easy, and you know what you're putting in your baby!!
Definitely get some ice cube trays. Once frozen, put in freezer bags, label and date.
I started with basic one ingredient foods: peas, green beens, squash, sweet pot. apple sauce, bananas, peaches, etc.
When making, i steamed (on the stove) my veggies/fruit until very soft. I put them in blender (with water if needed).
I now have this and am so excited and can't wait to use it!

It steams, blends, defrosts and heats homemade babyfood!
For cookbooks, i loved Annabel Karmel: http://www.annabelkarmel.com/
Good luck!
