Hey moms out there!
My son is 4 months old and the pediatrician recommended starting rice cereal.
I'm wondering if it's worth it (cost and time wise) to make my own baby food.
What has your experience been?
Thanks for the advice!
Oh, and if it is worth it, what resources have you found helpful?

What can I do next?

I make my own, and it's super easy but takes some time for chopping and cooking. I found that making a ton of it at once and freezing it is the easiest. I use ice cube trays for freezing, ziplocks for storing, and then I just defrost whatever I need for each meal. I agree that 4 months is early to start, so you can wait another month or two if you want. My son hated the rice cereal from the start, so we used oatmeal, but mainly as a filler with fruit. Sweet potato is easy- cook, add water, and mash with a fork (no blender for potatoes). Carrots- steam and blend with water. Banana and avocado don't need to be cooked, just mashed, other fruits need cooking and blending. I keep some jars for when we are out at mealtimes. I never added enough water so it was hard to blend. Eventually, I got it! Good luck!

I, too, am using the book, Super Baby Food. I am pretty excited about it for child #2. Some people who do things the more natural way tend to wait until a little bit later to start food. I would look it up in SBF, or maybe Kellymom.com, and see if you agree.

Good luck!

I used the book Super Baby Food. It was very helpful and not too much extra work.

I made my own baby food with kid #3 and #4 because I just wanted them to eat what we were having. I am kind of a slacker mom in that way.

I found it to be very cost effective. Those baby food jars are expensive!!

Just fyi....if you are nursing your baby it is better and healthier for the baby to wait until she is 6 months. I don't know why pediatricians say this......

I make alot of my own baby food. My son is 10 months now so he doesn't eat much pureed stuff anymore, but when he did it was really really handy to have an immersion blender (a stick blender, if you will). It made pureeing anything a cinch. He always likes the fresh food better than the jarred stuff. I still bought some from time to time, mostly for when we were traveling or interesting flavors that would be difficult to make at home.

I mostly use the website wholesomebabyfood.com. I have also heard the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron is excellent. I froze some of my extra food in an ice cube tray and then transfered it to freezer bags to help keep it fresh and to keep from having to make it every day. Now I cook/steam things and just cut it up in very small pieces and keep it in the fridge. Good luck!

Absolutely it is worth it!! I whole heartedly agree. My baby is now 18 month and I did 98% all homemade baby food. He LOVES fruits and veggies! Just this morning he was running around the house eating a whole pear, loving it! Yes SuperBaby food book is great, also check out books on the subject at your library & google homemade babyfood. Wholesomebabyfood.com is a good site.

My friends are amazed of what a good eater my son is.

banana (very ripe)
avacado
sweet potato (baked & mashed)
were the first foods I introduced.

baked salmon at 10 months

It seems like it my be a lot of work but it is incredibly easy!! And totally worth it. Great nutrition, save $$ plus the confidence you are helping your child grow up healthy (plus mom & family will probably eat the healty foods your making too). Feel free to email me for more tips.

I never fed my son the tasteless rice cereal--I used it as filler for the food I made. Four months is early to start solids and you are probably fine to wait until 5 even 6 months. I started my son on mashed bananas, regular grown-up applesauce and pureed sweet peas and pureed dried prunes.
