My 2 yr old son has a dry cough and I hate hearing him cough especially at night. The doctor told me that I cannot give him any cough medicine. So I was wondering what other mothers do. Please help! :)

If you have metholated spirits (sorry about the spelling), vinigar and water, you could make 3,2,1 it is where you put 3 tablespoons of spirits, 2 vinigar and 1 water in to a bowl and dip a bandanna or tea towel in it then wrap it around you son's neck. I've used it on my kids and all my families kids and it works everytime (DO NOT USE IF THERE IS A THROAT INFECTION INVOLVED), it help to get rid of the phleym in the throat.

Hi Kiwi,
essential oils are great for cough suppression. here is my favorite "recipe"....on a tissue
(NOT on his skin):
4 drops peppermint oil
4 drops eucalyptus oil
2 drops rosemary oil
1 drop basil oil

put it in his room at night (where he won't get to it--also put it on a glass saucer/small plate -- the oils can ruin furniture and plastics)

with older kids, I clip the tissue to their shirt and they go around doing whatever they want to do.

make sure the oils are 100% essential oils. - and store/keep them them out of the sunlight.

Good luck and I hope he (and you) can sleep better! ~C.~

Pick up some elderberry syrup or extract. You can add a few drops of the extract to one of his drinks. Most health food stores carry it.

The news the other day was saying that a teaspoon of honey would work to sooth coughs. It is only recommended for children over a year of age. So your son should be fine. It is worth a try. Good luck and God Bless.

If you could get him to drink some "warm" not hot decaf tea with a little honey. It soothing and just a few sips. The honey and warmth soothes the throat. They're are so many tea's out there, maybe a mild flavor that'll go with honey. And like I said it doesn't have to be the whole cup, just a few sips. When our son was little I got him to do this and till this day I do it for all of us. Also, if he won't drink the tea give him a spoonful of honey.
Good luck!

Orange juice. Or honey with lime will soothe his throat. Or tea with honey, and a spoon of lime.

nothing new here, but what we do is tea with honey and lemon, humidifier, and a big pillow in the bed so my son can prop himself up (in case there is actually a little postnasal drip involved). Twice I have let him have a saf-t-pop, just so that he could make it into slumberland, not the best for his teeth, but it was time for an exception.

The doctor we just saw today (son has begining stages of croupe) suggested Honey as a natural cough supressant. HOWEVER I know that young children should not have honey - so I would verify if your child is old enough to even have honey before attempting this remedy. In addition I have no first hand experience - considering trying it w/ my 5yo son this go around. So, if anyone can add to this information or even tell me the doc we saw (not our reg pedi) is a loon that is welcomed info.

So, I guess we may both want to look into it as an option to see if it's right for us ;)

We've used homeopathic cough syrup before and it seemed to help. I believe Boiron makes it. I also give honey, use a humidifier with eucalyptus oil, and rub Baby Vick's on their chest if they let me!

Totally understand how upsetting it is to hear your little one coughing. Wishing you all a quick recovery!

Like many of the others have said, honey!!!

My friend's mom used to put a spoonful of honey in warm water and add a bit of apple cider vinegar to it, too. Then they would sit together, read books, snuggle, and she'd sip the drink while her mom drank tea.

ETA- Honey is generally recognized as safe after 2yo. Many people believe it to be safe after 1yo. The concern is for botulism (sp)...rare, but serious.
---------

Steam him before bed - run extra hot shower and hang out with him in bathroom before bedtime. Get jammies on, brush teeth, read books in steamy room.

Vicks baby rub on chest and/or feet (with feet covered at night).

Humidifier

Spoon of honey- alone or or in warm, noncaffinated tea.

Lots of water!
Lots of rest!
