Sorry this is late and hopefully the fever is gone, but I have had great results with giving my son calcium lactate powder in his drink to reduce fevers. When a fever breaks it is using up the calcium in the bones to fight the bacteria and so repleneshing the calcium reduces the fever. Maybe you can try it next time? You can find the powder at most health food stores and it is odorless and tasteless so it can even be mixed with water.

Best wishes,
C.~

The new deal is not to give over the counter cold/cough medicine for, this was just in the new in the last couple of weeks. You can still give childrens Tynlanol, or childres motrin for fevers and pain. Call the doctor again to confirm.

Fever is the bodies way of fighting infection. Our doctor says as long as the fever doesn't go over 101.9 is it better not to give Tylenol or Motrin, (for older children 2 and older, obviously for infants it is different). But they also said if the child is miserable and having ear pain to go ahead and give it. Once the antibiotic kicks in, the fever should subside. If the fever isn't going away once the child has been on antibiotics for a few days, there may be something else going on. I say if he's uncomfortable and not getting any rest, go ahead and give him a little Tylenol. If he's not resting, his body won't heal as fast as it should either. Go with your gut instinct!

My advice to you is to purchase a book called "Your Vital Child" by Mark and Angela Stengler. You can only purchase it on Amazon because it's out of print.

This book is all homeopathic remedies for children! It has been a lifesaver! You will find EVERYTHING you need in this book.

The homeopathic medicines can be purchased at most natural food markets. Whole foods is a good one and so is Wild Oats.

For fever:
Buy the 30C or 30X potency and administer 2 pellets every 2 hours.

Homeopathic Medicine:
China officinalis:
The fever is periodic-it comes and goes.
Good luck!

S.: If your son does not have other health issues or allergies. I would give him plain tylenol alternating with motrin. Please make sure that you give him the right does for his age. Also, with that I would try making a paste of baking soda with vaseline and put it on the bottom of his feet. My daughter has had ear problems since birth and this helped wonders. If the fever does not subside please take him to ANOTHER doctor. He may need an antibiotic to fight the infection.

Good luck

I would take your son to a different doctor and get a second opinion. I have no idea why a doctor would tell you NOT to treat the fever with Motrin or Tylenol; especially since your son has an ear infection. Your child's health could be at risk if his fever is high enough. Also, a week is an aweful long time to have a fever and most doctors will want to run further tests to find out why a fever is lasting so long. Take your son to a different pediatrician and give that baby some Tylenol. Without further information, I question your doctor's reasoning.

Hi S., That is weird that the doctor would tell you not to give them medication for fevers. My daughter is 3 1/2 and she has struggled her whole life with fevers from ear infections. I have always found that the only thing that helps her is ibuprofen but if she gets a really high fever then I rotate ibuprofen and tylenol. She was getting so many ear infections and fevers that they put tubes in her ears, she is actually on her second set of tubes. Dont take the fevers too lightly. My daughter started having seizures from fevers. I dont mean to scare you but you have to be careful with the little ones because their fevers spike suddenly. When she gets a high fever I immediately give her ibuprofen and then I strip her down to just her panties to let her body help cools itself. Be careful with baths because that can actually bring their fever up if it is too warm. If she is really hot I will take a cool wash cloth and lay it on her forehead and that really helps.

Good luck to you and your son. Having a sick little one it hard.

Hopefully the antiobiotic will work soon. Ear infections are the worst. I know it sounds kind of contradictory since you want to get rid of fever but to help his ears sometimes putting a warm wash rag behind his ears can help to sooth the pain. You may also consider asking your son's doctor about an ear drop to help with pain. When my son was younger that was all that would allow him to sleep because of the pain.

Just a cool rag the covers their head helps my kids. I wouldn't believe in any homeopathic ways for children. A lot of those herbs are not regulated and nobody knows if they are safe or not! Tylenol has always helped my kids who are 3 adn 6. I am surprised they didn't say to give him tylenol! I mean fevers can be good as the body is fighting off the bug in his system but it can so help him rest better and lower the fever. Did they not give him anything for his ear infection? If they did that will help when the fight for the infection lesses. If a fever has gone on a week and your Dr isn't helping I would find another Dr. Tylenol for a 3 year old is safe and helpful with an ongoing fever! Cool rags help and they have those new things in the medicine aisle that you can put on their foreheads, has some gel in it and it sticks to their foreheand and helps or so I have heard.
Good luck

Hi S. -
For earaches, I use drops of olive oil in the ears...there are other oils you can use too. Whole Foods is a good place for natural remedies, just ask the assistant working there, they are very friendly.

For a high fever, a cool bath is good. I used that once on my son when he was very little. He didn't like the cold water, but it worked. For mild fevers I just use baby Tylenol, but there's probably something better.

Hope that helps, L.

S.,
Children always run higher body temp at night anyway. They can also tolerate a much higher temp than adults, please don't let these people worry you to death, a temp of 100-101 at night that goes away on it's own is NOT going to cause febrile seizures. In fact kids can go even as high as 105 without concern, except of course for comfort. Tylenol or motrin is fine to use, but usually for comfort only. Also if your child has been on antibiotics for 72hours and still having fevers, he may need a different one. The most important thing you can do for him is keep him hydrated, all the water, juice, popsicles he can stand. I hope this helps.

fever is ths bodys wayof fighting infection. bacteria only lives and grows at a certain temperature and that isthe bodies way fo cooking it to death. so a little fever is good as long as it doesnt get too high. i beleive my pediatrician says not over 102 for infants. try cool baths, cool fluids. increased fluids help everything wash out and also the fever to go down. over use of antibiotics can resultin allergies or resistance to antibiotics. for earaches a bit of olive oil in the ear ( warm) can ease the pain .

Hi S.. His fever could be from both his cold and his ear infection. My son has had several unexplained fevers, and one time he got up to 105. We had to take him to the ER. They gave him tylenol/motrin combo because of his high fever and an IV of Saline to "puff him up" is what they called it. Ha. Just to get him hydrated.
I would alternate Tylenol and Motrin if his fever gets any higher. Right now at 100.3 I wouldn't give him anything except for may be some juice to help hydrate him.
With our son, he's gotten 102-104 a couple of weeks ago. This time he actually came down with a head cold. We gave him baths and let the water drip off of him because with the water dripping off, it will act as a coolant on his body. We've given him cool compresses on the forhead and neck. If your son's fever gets passed 102.0 then take off his clothes except for his diaper/undies and let him run around like that. The ER doctor and nurse said that if we kept our son's clothes on, then the fever has no where to escape. Made sense, so I did it. It worked. At night is when his fever would spike the worst and we would have to strip him down and let him sleep without covers or jammies. Of course I didn't sleep well and I was constantly checking him. If he felt cold, then I would just pull the sheet over him. These home remedies have worked for us. I hope I gave you some good ideas to try as well and I hope they work for your son.
Since you are giving your son antibiotics, then they will tell you not to give any meds over the counter, but you can still give tylenol/motrin if he gets a fever again. Verify with your doctor before you do so, or even your pharmacist. Take care. Hope your little one feels better soon.

I know this might sound nutty, but it works. Give him a clove of garlic to chew on and eat. 1 to 2 a day till it is gone. It shouldn't take that long.

S. - if you want to treat the fever, treat the fever- especially if it goes over 101.4. I used to always treat fevers, then my docs kept suggesting not to... so I stopped. It was then my two year old had febrile seizures, passed out and went to the hospital via ambulance. So if you want to treat the fever, "your mommy gut" tells you to, then give him something over the counter to make him feel better.

Who is your doctor?
I'm all for not giving my children medication that they don't need, but......if your child is running a fever (greater then 101') and you don't treat it the fever will probable continue to rise and he could have a seizure. Which is the bodies way of saying WARNING-DANGER AHEAD!!! Not to mention he probable feels pretty aweful. I know I do when I run a fever. Motrin seems to work best for fever and pain and is safe for children over 6 months. Also, sudafed works well for ear pain, if they have a stuffy and or runny nose. A luke warm bath will help bring down a fever, but NEVER, EVER put a child in water below 98.6'. That alone will cause a seizure. Bring down a childs body temp too quickly can cause them to have a seizure. I have worked in emergency medicine for over 20 years and have seem it too many times.
Good luck.
If you need a good doctor for a second opionion consider the doc at Northwest Clinic for Children ###-###-####

11-09-07: Fevers of 105' or greater can cause dehydration and brain injury. Children cannot tolerate a fever that high.

HI S.,
Well you already have alot of mom's telling you to switch Drs which is also what I was going to suggest. Fevers left untreated can cause premanant brain damage and ear infections left untreated can lead to deafness. Your son needs meds! Go to a different Drs, ER if you need too and get some antibiotics for your son. I would then use Motrin for the fever and pain and give according to the lable. I know other mom's and even your Dr might suggest Tylenol but my personal experience with it is it doesn't seem to touch my kids' fevers or their pain, stick with the motrin just make sure they have some food, even if its crackers, in their stomach. Good luck!
