Home Evaluation for Asthma Triggers in DFW

I have 2 boys with asthma. Basically, whenever they get a virus involving snot, they cough and wheeze, but otherwise they don't have symptoms My husband is convinced that it is caused/exacerbated by the dust in our house. He says he can see and smell the dust in our house and that he can feel it when he breathes in. I think he is crazy but I figure I owe it to him and my kids to look into it. Our house is not particularly dusty in my opinion. It is dusted and vacuumed weekly. It is a newer house so I wouldn't think the ducts need to be cleaned yet. Wouldn't they have asthma symptoms all the time if dust was a trigger? So I am looking for a company that can evaluate our house objectively for dust and other allergens. Pehaps air quality testing? I just want to make sure we know what is really going on before we take drastic measures (i.e. remove all stuffed animals, replace carpet with hardwoods etc.).

What can I do next?

Mold and environmental testing for air quality starts at $250 and most is around $500. There are many companies online but it is best to get a referral.
A lot of times out gasing of household products is to blame. Shampoo, bleach, soap, laundry det, cleaners etc contain formaldehyde and other toxins that trigger asthma and allergy symptoms.

Hi L.,
It is a daily battle to understand and help your sons with there asthma. Growing up I saw how my mom and sister had to deal with it and things that worked. At one point my sister had it so bad my parents had to place her in a asthmatic home for children. When my sister did come home afterwards some of the things they did to help her was to take out the carpet, get rid of the stuffed animals and clutter and minimize anything that could carry dust. That helped her so much and her asthma got better. When people struggle for air they need clean pure air. I would also suggest getting some air purifiers for your house, especially your sons rooms where they sleep.

Best of luck to you and your boys!

My son has the same thing. It is not related to exercise or allergies, but rather to a virus that moves consistently into his lungs. Every time he gets sick I know it is coming. It has all the same symptoms as asthma, but is actually called Reactive Airway Disease. The doctor said that he would outgrow it, and he IS getting better (age 12). But it is NOT related to dust. Save your $$ for copays to the doctor to get the necessary meds (inhalers, steroids, etc), and buy the breathing/nebulizer machine from Wal-Greens so you are ready when the episodes occur. -- Good luck!

my whole family has asthma so i know the feeling. try getting someone to clean out your air ducts. If you need someone to come look and see if it needs to be done, call Kevin DeArmond. ###-###-#### he's an a.c. guy.

Our house was built in 2005 and we had the ducts cleaned in late 2006--the guy said that in new construction neighborhoods there is a lot of dust because of all the building going on around your house. It had built up pretty good.

My oldest son usually starts having weepy eyes and sneezing that leads to coughing and wheezing. Our pediatrician called it "allergy related asthma." She says he'll outgrow it, as well. We have the nebulizer and he is on xopanex when his coughing gets bad. 6 months ago he started singulair and that has really helped.

Good luck with your decisions!
