I am thinking of looking for a part time job to earn extra money for the holidays. Has anyone done this and where did you work? Do any of the stores pay more than minimum wage? When would I start applying?

All of your department stores do and Wal-Mart, Target and grocery stores as well. I know that Wal-Mart and Target do pay more than min. wage. I would apply now. I always applied in late August for my Christmas jobs.

I worked at a toy store during Christmas. I worked a couple nights a week and long days on the weekend. They kept me on through the after Christmas clearance. It was fun but pretty sure I made minimum wage. or just a little above it. The best thing was the 20% employee discount and I knew the best deals in the store. I did my Christmas shopping while at work and got a 20% discount on Christmas that year!

Do NOT go to Target for work! I took on a second job there a few years ago and there were times that I wouldn't get home till 1 or 2 in the morning. Then I would have to get up to go to my full time job! It was awful! Other ones may be different but the one in Springfield was terrible. They would schedule high schools to close, but MO law says that they have to go home by 10, so that left the rest of the store to clean up after they were gone, and you had to stay until ALL the departments were done. Yuck

I worked at Carson Pirie Scott in the customer service department as a seasonal employee the year we moved to Illinois. It paid quite a bit more than minimum wage. We moved in mid October so that's when I applied & they had me start November 1 because I had to do some training first (how to use their cash registers, etc.). It seems like the stores are decorated for the holidays right after Labor Day so you may want to call places anytime now & see when they start accepting seasonal applications. Last year my sister-in-law worked for Omaha Steaks as a seasonal employee. She did phone orders and I think she was able to do at least some of it from her house. I'm not sure how much she was paid. My husband works in retail and they no longer hire seasonal employees (trying to save money with the economy, etc.) so there may be other places that no longer hire extras for the holidays. Good Luck!

I always applied in early November but that was years ago. I think you should call around to see when they start accepting applications.
I worked at our local department store, a gift shop in the mall and Victoria's Secret. It was always minimum wage, plus a store discount.

I worked at the Oakbrook Center Pottery Barn for a year and they hired seasonal workers for the holiday season. I know there's also a PB in downtown Naperville as well as Geneva. You would get their 30% off discount, which is good at PB, PB Kids, Williams Sonoma & West Elm. I believe they pay about $8/hr and would probably be hiring in Oct.
