Hip Pain

Hi! I am about 21 weeks pregnant and have been having terrible hip pain for a while. If I do sideways leg lifts before sleep, I can usually walk in the morning, but still have pain all day. If I don't do the leg lifts, it hurts much much worse. Do you have any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

Walking is the best thing. your hips are probabby spreading to get ready for delivery. Is this your first baby? Also, the baby could be leaning on a nerve causing hip pain, especially while you're asleep. you could talk to your OB or a chriopracter. make sure you get a good reference before choosing a chiropracter though. Hope you feel better.

I would talk to the doctor, it sounds like the baby may be pushing on something or hitting something.......Not sure what it might be, but you should get it checked out to be sure you and the baby is ok. The more weight you gain, the more it's going to hurt unless the baby moves if that is the problem.

Take care and Congratulations!

I went through the same thing with both my pregnancies. With my first pregnancy, they doctor just dismissed it as hip spreading, even though my daughter was never engaged. With my second pregnancy the pain was so bad I couldn't walk. I went to chiropractor and it made ALL the difference in the world! I seriously recommend it. It took me a few sessions to get everything back into place and then for it to STAY in place. It was AMAZING though.I went once a month until I got too big to feel comfortable on the table. I seriously recommend it.

I'm 26 wks pregnant and I have pretty good hip pain too (though not as bad as yours - I can walk, though stiffly at first!).
Prenatal yoga helps a lot.
Also, do you have extra pillows or a pregnancy pillow? I find that a pillow between my knees while I sleep helps with the hip pain.
Good luck!

Ugh, I'm 26 wks pregnant with my second and I have the same thing.
What I've found that really helps is prenatal yoga (which includes exercises like leg lifts), and stretching- lots and lots of stretching, in the morning first thing and at night before bed.
Make sure you warm up your legs/hips first though by do the leg lifts, or even "pregnant lady" squats, then stretch away!
I'm also going to see if massages and acupuncture work... This time around the baby is sitting so much lower than my first time- or maybe my hips are just super relaxed now. Good luck!

I just had this with my 2nd pregnancy and it was not fun! I went to a P.T and they had me do exercises which helped for a while, but it just got worse as i got farther along. There is a name for it, but i dont remember what it is. By the end of my pregnancy i could not even roll over in bed and could hardly get out and walk it hurt so bad. It did go away once the baby was born though, but it was not fun. You could try one of those pregnancy belt things. They are supposed to help with keeping your hips aligned and help with the pain. Good Luck!
