Hip Bursitis

Hi Ladies,
Just wondering if anyone suffers from hip bursitis? I believe I have it and I am wondering if any of you have found relief from a corticosteroid shot. If so, do you have to go to a sports medicine doctor to get the shot, or did you go to your regular physician? Were they willing to give you the shot based on a physical exam, or did they require x-rays. I am in so much pain, can hardly walk, can't sleep, I just can't deal with this through the holidays. I am trying to rest etc, but with two little ones that is darn near impossible and I still have Christmas shopping to do, I just need a quick fix. I have had chronic hip pain off and on for years after I hurt my hip in a small car accident. Now having read the symptoms of bursitis I am just sure that is what has been bothering me off an on all these years. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I have had that (while pregnant) and it's AWFUL!!! I went to a local chiropractor and in one visit she took care of it. It was nothing sort of miraculous!!! Highly recommend!

Hi, I'm a physical therapist. I highly recommend you see an orthopedic Dr. for an evaluation before getting any cortisone shots. Personally, I wouldn't have a family Dr. do them unless they had some kind of special training. Too many shots or too much cortisone, or not done correctly can actually weaken your muscle and make it prone to rupture. There are lots of conditions that can refer pain to the hip area, so it is important to get it checked out, even if you are pretty sure you know what it is. I know how painful that is and wish you a speedy recovery!

Your primary will probably have to order an mri, and then a pain specialist would give you the shot. My MIL has bursitis in both of her shoulders and she gets a shot once or twice a year and it works wonders for her.
I have some herniated discs in my back and I had a steroid shot a few months ago which has relieved the pain immensely.
To help yourself make sure you are taking D3, magnesium, fish or krill oil, and eat a diet that includes anti inflammatory foods. Look them up in "search".

Last time my hip bursitis flared, I saw my Orthopaedic surgeon (he did my hip replacement surgery). I told him about the pain, described how I couldn't sleep on the one side, etc. He pressed on the spot, I yelped and he ordered the shot. He did the shot right in his office - no waiting.

I hope you find relief soon.

J.,
I would not get a shot from a doctor other than an orthopedic.
A reputable chiropractor could make sure your hip is in alignment. Then you need to do exercises to strenghten your core. Using an eliptical machine also relieves my hip bursitis. I have never gotten a shot for it.

i wouldn't allow anyone other than an orthopedic surgeon do an intra-atricular injection on me. imo, that is just beyond the scope of what a family physician does on a regular basis. i have had two injections in my left hip, with significant improvement that lasted several months, i am considering getting another one soon, it's been almost 18 months since my last one(i had it done during knee surgery, so i was out cold and he was able to really get down in the joint and put a pretty stout dose in). i would imagine that any dr worth their weight would at least do an x-ray to rule out anything more serious. i'd try to get in asap, but i'd really encourage you to not let a family doctor or urgent care physician do this type of injection on you. good luck!

Don't know about the diagnosis but my grandmother gets her injections from her regular family doctor and when I worked in the nursing home the general practice doctors that came in gave cortisone injections to some of the residents.

Definitely go to an Ortho Dr. You want someone with advanced training for this one.

I feel your pain. I have had this before and it is miserable. I saw a chiropractor who along with all of the regular "stuff" showed me how to do certain exercises to stretch the ligaments and tendons. It actually cleared up pretty quickly by doing so. You might just go see an orthopedic doctor, however, in hopes he can give you a steroid shot to get through the holidays (and show you how to properly stretch it, etc.).
