High Cholesterol Remedies

My husband just had blood work done and his cholesterol levels have shot up big time and his good cholesterol is low. his eating habits are not the greatest, something I am working on. But over all he doesn't eat things that would cause a large increase since his last check up 2 yrs ago and if anything his diet has gotten better. His doc prescribed some meds but with insurance they still cost an arm and a leg (about $200 a month!!!) which we really can't afford. I was wondering if anyone knows of some ways to lower cholesterol without meds, like herbal supplements or foods to eat or avoid. Any help is greatly appreciated!

So What Happened?

Wow! Thanks for all the great advice! My hubby and I decided that he should not take the meds. He is going to take garlic supplements,a multi-vitamin for lowering cholesterol he found at costco, as well as JuicePlus and we are going to continue to improve our diet with more fiber. Hopefully this will work. We also realized that the morning of his test he had had coffee with non-fat creamer and sugar (he uses a lot of sugar too) so we are thinking this could be why the numbers were so high. He is also going to go to another doctor and get re-tested. His doc is well, old. This doc actually delivered my husband! and hubby has been going to him all his life. So now he has decided to get a new doc cause he didn't like being put on meds right away. Thanks a ton for all of your help!!!

My boyfriend had exactly the same problem last November. His doctor wanted to wait a month before putting him on meds to see if he can lose some weight and exercise, and see if that would have an impact on his cholesterol/triglyceride numbers. His numbers were off the charts high, and the "good" cholesterol was very low.

Right away, my boyfriend increased his fiber intake, eating high fiber, low sugar cereals like three times a day. He ate more fruits and veg's, drank tons of water, and decreased his fat and dairy in take. He did this EVERY DAY for a month. In addition to this, he started taking garlic, green tea, and chromium picolinate supplements (his doc told him to try the picolinate, but I've just read it may not be good to use). Also he tried Xtendlife Cholest-Natural - a supplement we found on the internet. (We are not the types to just get stuff from the internet and trust it right away, I guess the Xtend life was an exception.)

Anyway, within in a month and a half's time, he had lost 13 lbs and his number went down to normal. His doctor was very truly amazed, as were we! We can't pinpoint what exactly worked, if it was the weight loss or the supplements or both, but something did work!

Good recommendations so far... just reiterating most. Cut way back on any animal product (meat/dairy), like max once a day. Cut way back on meat- I don't just mean one traditional american serving a day, I mean 4 oz of red meat maybe three times a week, and a few servings of chicken as well. 4oz is about the size of a deck of playing cards. To help replace some of the lost meat, fix more fish (the fat in fish helps lower bad and raise good cholesterol) and replace the meat in other dishes, such as spaghetti and casseroles, with canned beans (black beans, white beans, whatever you like best). Nuts and seeds will also help keep him full without wanting so much meat, and another source of good fat that will help reduce his cholesterol (as well as avocados- just do all of these in moderation because they are fatty). For milk try alternatives such as soy or rice milk(biggest difference is taste because both are fortified, soy has some fat and rice has none- I love light vanilla soy from Silk, but rice milk has a more similar mouth feel to milk. For some strange reason people have such a problem with milk substitutes, but they taste good and if he's serious he'll try them!) Absolutely no cheese or butter (can sub the cholesterol free kinds like smart balance). And if he eats eggs sub egg beaters and fix veggie omelets (I love spinach- I use the frozen kind, onion and tomato omelets). Lots and lots and lots of fiber- my dad eats oatmeal for breakfast every day for his cholesterol (old fashioned has a tad more fiber than quick or instant), switch out all white flour products for whole grain- fortunately this is easy now because anything has a whole wheat counterpart. Don't buy "wheat"- look for "whole wheat" or "100% stone ground wheat" and read the label: a good bread should have 3g of fiber per slice. I believe the heart healthy versions are lower in cholesterol, too. It's a little more expensive, but a better choice than hundereds a month on meds. Avoid canned vegetables, using instead fresh or frozen which have more fiber and plant sterols which lower cholesterol. And cereal, which has really played up the cholesterol lowering thing lately, look for no lower than 5g of fiber per serving. Raisin bran or any bran flake is a good choice, and I think they're good. Smart Start is good too, but I can't remember the fiber content. Cheerios aren't actually the best even though they proudly advertise their benefits- they won't hurt, by any means, but they're low on the fiber side. If you're diligent, though, you should be able to control his cholesterol without meds. I would also find some way to encourage him to excersize, even if the two of you just take a 30 min walk after dinner or something. And if you start finding it difficult, just think about the years you are adding onto your husband's life! Use the internet to help you find healthier recipies that are high in fiber and veggies instead of meat and cheese, and with a little practice you'll be able to adapt any recipe to meet your needs.

Unfortunately cholesterol can come from two different sources. Some are the foods we eat and some are genetic. As for foods to avoid, everything that comes from an animal has cholesterol and this includes meat, milk, and cheese. My family (parents, siblings, aunts, cousins) all tend to have high colesterol. Some of us are vegetarians and still have problems so for us it is generic. Not much we can do but take the meds. There is alot of information out there, check webmd.com or just google "high cholesterol" and you can get lots of info on helping him. Good luck. M.

You have to find the reason why his cholesterol shot up so fast. Eating better and exercise may not be the answer.

However in most cases, increase fiber and water, eat protein with vegetables with fruit in between. NO refined sugar or flour. Read labels.

Diet and exercise actually works the best. Unless you are a senior citizen. I had a friend who couldn't get discharged out of the military until he got his cholesterol down A LOT & he did it by eating tuna two meals a day (no mayo). Lunch could be on bread with mustard (no chol in that) and then dinner alone. Fresh fruit & veggies. Also, exercise to metabolize better. In a month, my friend brought his cholesterol down below where he needed in order to be discharged (100 points). It isn't a permanent fix, but it is a kick start in the pants & once at your target....get an overall good regiment of better eating. More than likely what changed in your hubby, was his metabolism. We generally slow as we age...the less we workout, the slower it can get. So even though he has eaten better in the last 2 yrs, his metabolism isn't processing as fast, and therefore, his levels are higher. Good luck & God Bless!

My Father in-law had high cholesterol and my brother in-law whom is a dr. told him to use cinnimon. He used it on everything.:)Based on his using the cinnimon my father in-laws numbers dropped by at least 20 percent. if not more. My brother in law was able to write a paper on the findings and have it published in a medical journal.SO it can help.

From what I understand you have to be careful on getting off of most medications for high cholesterol. They almost seem like you are on them for life. So if he does start taking anything from the dr. ask how long he'll have to be on them, and is it safe to stop taking them at anytime. As i understand it it is hard on your body when you stop most of the meds. for high cholesterol.

Aside from the cinnimon oatmeal is suppost to be a good cholesterol reducer. Anyway hope that this helps, and I wish you the best!

First, was his test valid? Did he fast for 12 hours? Was his last meal before the test, very high in saturated fats? If so, and/or he didn't fast correctly, get a re-test and be sure before he takes decides to take any meds. These meds can have very uncomfortable side effects, be expensive and sometimes don't even work for the individual. He should have a re-test in 6 months for accuracy and for any lowering effect if he chooses to use meds. Also, the higher the stress level of the individual...very often the higher the total cholesterol. Stay away from anything with "hydrogenated" oils, and curb saturated fats. He very likely needs to be excercising more too. Some people have a genetic propensity to higher levels of cholesterol despite everything they do...those are the ones who really need meds to lower it down. Others can do it w/ diet and exercise. Good luck to the two of you!

When I lost all my weight (132pounds) I had a HUGE drop in my cholesterol. About half. I was on a very strict diet when it came to fats and dairy. Lots of whole grains, fruits and veggies. Using green jalapeño salsa in tuna fish instead of mayo. Things like that help a lot. Exercise will boost the "good" cholesterol. There is a "butter" out there that claims to lower your cholesterol, my friend used it to lower his even more (Benechol, I think that's the name). When I needed to up my stragedy, I choose not to use it and went old fashion with cheerios and oatmeal. Plain, blah, I know, but it works! I hope this helps a little. Hi J.,

Here are suggestions for reducing cholesterol from Dr. Weil's website. My husband deals with the same thing.

1. Reduce saturated fat. The richest sources of saturated fat (fat that is usually solid at room temperature) in the diet are red meat and dairy foods. Substitute soy protein for animal protein, and use low- or non-fat dairy products.
2. Avoid trans-fat. Stay away from items that list "partially hydrogenated oil" on the label, especially snack foods. Try baked or air-popped versions instead.
3. Use fresh garlic regularly in your meals. Garlic has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels.
4. Drink green tea daily. The antioxidants in green tea help lower cholesterol and prevent the cholesterol in your blood from oxidizing.
5. Eat plenty of soluble fiber. It has a powerful cholesterol-lowering effect. The best sources are beans and lentils, apples, citrus fruits, oats, barley, peas, carrots and freshly ground flaxseed.
best of luck!

We joined Weight Watchers and dropped weight, began to move with some form of exercise (we ride bikes and he golfs) and we eat Oatmeal and five grain cereal every morning for breakfast. It sounds like you have gotten some great advice, but I also wanted to add... my husband also does not eat great, so to help him without him knowing I bought a book called Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld and it has really helped. It's for kids, but the recipes work for adults and can at least be altered for adults. There are veggies that also help with the good cholesterol that can be puried and put into almost any recipe for added health. If your hubby isn't as picky as mine, you can let him in on the secret, but if you don't tell, he won't know because you really can't taste liquified broccoli and cauliflower in spaghetti sauce!! Research veggies for cholesterol and go to work! Good luck!

I have known several people to have success with Red Yeast Rice Supplements.

My mother actually had some hearing loss due to high cholesterol. Her dr., wanted to put her on med's, but she asked him to give her 2 months. She took the Red Yeast Rice Supplements, and he was satisfied with the results. She said she had not side affects. As a result, several of her friends have done the same.

Obviously diet & cardiovascular exercise is important too, but sometimes heredity plays the biggest role.

Hi J.,

I agree with Sharon, Melaleuca has some very good supplements for lowering cholesterol, high blood pressure, etc.

Here are some other ideas from DrWeil.com:

Five Ways to Lower Cholesterol

For people battling high cholesterol, choosing meals wisely can be a challenge, but it is essential. Restaurants, parties, even an office potluck may present unhealthy temptations. But simple dietary modifications can help you eliminate those unhealthy choices, while still allowing you to enjoy your meals. Try these healthful ways to help lower your cholesterol:

Reduce saturated fat. The richest sources of saturated fat (fat that is usually solid at room temperature) in the diet are red meat and dairy foods. Substitute soy protein for animal protein, and use low- or non-fat dairy products.

Avoid trans-fat. Stay away from items that list "partially hydrogenated oil" on the label, especially snack foods. Try baked or air-popped versions instead.

Drink green tea daily. The antioxidants in green tea help lower cholesterol and prevent the cholesterol in your blood from oxidizing.

Eat plenty of soluble fiber. It has a powerful cholesterol-lowering effect. The best sources are beans and lentils, apples, citrus fruits, oats, barley, peas, carrots and freshly ground flaxseed.

Hope that helps.

Hi J.,
My best advise for you is to go to a health food store and ask an employee, their pretty good about helping. Natural herbs and such can help. I have high cholesterol and I have tried to watch what I eat but it is not easy, I love mexican food and that is one of the worst things for ya. Go online and look up foods you can eat and should stay away from. I have not taken any meds as of yet, I am going back to have my cholesterol checked again beofre starting RX, if taken for too long the meds can cause liver problems.

Anyway best of luck to you and your husband.

I have had cholesterol and triglyceride problems. Of course the doctor put me on statins, which I am lucky that my insurance covers. But he also put me on Niaspan. This is the prescription form, but you can but Niacin over the counter. It does cause flushing and some people can't handle it (my husband can't). Be sure to buy the timed-release kind. It's worth trying. I'm sure the doctor will explain the best way to take it. Also Fish Oil Capsules have significantly lowered my triglicerides and, I think, helped my cholesterol. You can get those lots of places. I buy the Kirkland brand at Costco. They are horse pill size. I take one 3 times a day. As far as food is concerned, he should try to avoid high fat foods, fatty beef more than 2 or 3 times a week. Eat more chicken and fish. Whole grain foods, fruits, vegetables are preferred. And avoid fried foods. But the fact is some people have naturally high or inherited tendency toward High cholesterol and need medication to bring it down. But the supplements and dietary change are worth the try.
