I also am a first time mother, and my daughter is 2 months old and gets hiccups all the time. One of the parenting magazines that I subscribe to said that it's completely normal - it has to do with their diaphragms not functioning correctly because they are still getting used to breathing. The magazine said that there are a few things you can do:
1: Blow in his face lightly. (This one hasn't worked for me yet, but it might for you.)
2: Take the baby into an area with colder air. (Haven't tried this one - I'm really paranoid about my little girl getting sick.)
3: Feed him. (This one works really well for me. I breastfeed her, and it works every time.)
If none of these works, I've noticed that my daughter's hiccups go away on their own after a little while.

my little boy hiccuped quite often also. usually I would try to give him another drink if he wouldn't take it I'd wait awhile then they would either go away or I would try to give him another drink or pat him on his back. They would always go away. Now he is a year old and he doesn't do it that often anymore.

It is completely normal. My son did it too. There really isn't anything you can do about it except wait it out. It probably doesn't even bother her.

My first little guy had hiccups every day until he was probably 15 months old. They say they don't bother them like they bother us... don't worry too much about it!

Like everyone said, it does not hurt them, but you still want to do something about it. My mom always told me to put a little sugar on either a pacifier or my fingertip and let them suck on that a bit and the hiccups will stop....and they do!!!

It is very normal. It seems so sad and frustrating when these little guys (or girls) get the hiccups. But, as my doctor told me, remember that they were also hiccuping when they were inside you. It's normal because their little systems are not fully developed. What to do... I just hold my baby tight and pat his back. Does it help? I'm not sure, but I feel better and at least he is comforted. Good luck.

Yep. . .my daughter too! She even got hiccups 1 to 2 times a day when I was pregnant with her and they continued as a newborn. Like the other moms have said though they never bothered her and she soon grew out of them. :o)

My son hiccupped all the time and it really didn't stop until he was 5 or 6 months old. He is now 9 months and still gets them several times a week. I use to give him gripe water (the kind without sodium bicarbonate or charcoal) because he was full of painful gas. The gripe water had a positive side affect in that it relieved hiccups about 80% of the time.

All three of my children would get the hiccups 2 or 3 times a day for the first few months. It always helped to nurse them if they let me. The pattern of breathing needed to nurse would eventually calm the hiccups.

Yes, I remember reading something that it's good for babies to hiccup. My daughter would do it ALL the time after she ate. It does not hurt them, you just wait til it's over.

Both of my sweeties did this, too. It's normal and the Dr. said it doesn't bother them, just seems odd to us. I think it has to do with all the air in their tummies and adjusting to life outside the womb. It should taper off in a few weeks. Hang in there and hope you get some sleep, too!

Mine hiccuped all the time in the womb. Sure enough, she still gets them alot. It bothers me and my husband more than it does her though. I just nurse her for a little bit or give her a little sugar water from a bottle. All it takes is a couple of drops and the hiccups go away.

My daughter is a year old now, but when she was a newborn she ALWAYS got the hiccups. There wasn't much I could do for her, unfortunately. She did grow out of it though because she hardly ever gets them now. Congratulations on your new little one. They are so much fun!

It's very normal. Mine had them all the time, and the dr said at first it helps them clear out any stuff that's still in their bodies from when they were born. Also, I've read that it's their way of saying they're tired or over stimulated. I noticed (still do at 13 months) that he would get hiccups that seemed to last forever when we kept him awake too long. He also had the hiccups all the time before he was born. It was so cute to me at first, but then it just got on my nerves because it would last about 30 minutes or more. LOL

Long before I had a baby I had a puppy. He got hiccups too. The vet said all babies and puppies get them. Sure enough, both my kids got them as infants. It's just part of their development. We video taped my daughter's and just last night we were watching and she was laughing so hard. She's almost 8 now. As long as your baby doesn't appear to be in pain just enjoy them and make mimic her, see what she does.

It's totally normal, as other moms have said. I've also heard pediatricians say that they like to see infants hiccup because it means the baby is being well fed. My daughter and son hiccuped all the time, and I never did anything to try and make it go away. It's natural and doesn't hurt the baby or keep him awake, so just let the hiccups run their course and know that you're taking good care of your baby!

I have a 2 month old little boy. My Dr. said he will grow out of them. I know I hate to see my boy with them. I've been putting a little water in a bottle and giving him that. When he drinks it, it seems to help.
Good luck.

My son hiccuped every time after he ate until he was about 4 months or so. If you're nursing, give her a few extrs sips of your breast when she's hiccuping and it will make it stop. If you're bottle feeding,I recommend the Playtex Nurser with drop ins to help reduce air intake. Hiccups are perfectly normal for a newborn. :)

I read that when babies get hiccups it is good b/c that means that are getting full. This is especially helpful if you are breastfeeding. It's one more way to ensure they are getting enough. Good luck. As a new mom the thing I've have learned most is to trust my instincts. They haven't failed me yet!

Hi S.,
My Dr. actually told me that this is GOOD for our little ones, it helps them to develop their diaphragm and breathing patterns. It really does not bother or hurt them.
