The ford focus is a pretty small car and I was able to install two carseats side by side recently, so I don't think you would have a problem putting seats in a Golf. I know of another car seat technician who was able to put in 1 radian (rear and foward facing) with two boosters on the outside of her 2 door golf. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to put two carseats in the back seat of a 4 door! :-)
What year are ya'll looking at?
I had an '89 VW Golf 2 Door hatchback. I loved it! I used to drive my sister's two daughters around in it all of the time. 2 car seats and 2 adults. There isn't much room in it however for all the stuff that children require. Maybe you could go test drive one and bring some stuff to put in it just to see.
I have 3 year old twins now, don't think I would go back to that after driving a van.
