Hey Any of You Ever Tried Geocaching with Your Kids? Did They Have Any Fun?

I'm just learning about this geocache thing. I'm always looking for new fun things to do with my 9 yr old. I'm a pirate at heart so Treasure Hunting is totally up my alley but I'm just trying to get some feedback on your experience with the game. I named our team The Geoonies (I thought it was clever. And GottaCachemAll was taken)
I already figured out what my trinket will be. The fuzzy mustaches from the dollar store. I've loved everything 'stache before it became a hipster thing. Wonder what baby girl will choose. Something purple I know...
If you play, What's your trinket?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We tried it and absolutely fell in love with it. We're already planning our first cache.

Yes, we used to geocache when my son was about age 7-9. We loved it. It's lots of fun! I'd always invite one of my son's friends to come along too since his sister is quite a bit younger. Sometimes it is very hard to find the treasure box, but that gives them a great sense of accomplishment when the kids do find it. Around here there are a lot of trails, so to me it was a great way to get the kids out hiking in nature. It gave them a goal. Enjoy! Added: my trinket was whatever small plastic doodad the kids were willing to give up since our house seems to fill with little plastic thingys.

I have not personally, but have known someone who was really into it and they actually planned vacations around it. It can be really fun. I would imagine it would really appeal to kids. We just never got into it but my kids have done something similar with scouting etc and found that to be fun. Enjoy :)

My oldest daughter was doing it with her kids a few years ago. Its fun. Around here they use a pad of paper and a pen or pencil. When you find one you put your initials and the date and then return it.

A few years ago a girl scout troop did a couple in the park by my house. Their directions were terrible and nobody found any of them. The leader started to complain until someone pointed out that the direction might be wrong. oops.

We've geocached all over the the place for about 8 years now. It's a great way to get out & explore the area, fun for kiddos & adults, & either free or very low cost. I never take things from the caches, just sign the log & move on. My kiddos will often take small toys from around the house & swap them out if they find something they like.

Yes, when our kids were a little younger, and even not so young. We have found them all over the world. My husband liked to do it with my son on trips when me and my daughter were shopping. Usually people place them by the most scenic or interesting spots so it is a fun way to get to those.

Now my son has two geocaches in parks nearby that he maintains.
