Well on top of my 11 year old son having brain surgery, which by the way we got home last Monday, I ended up being admitted to the hospital on Wed. for a bloodclot in my leg. I have had dvt's before, but it is very frustrating to have a sick son at home, and be in the hospital yourself. So I finally get to come home, and now I am on complete bedrest for atleast a week. On blood thinners, and miserable.Ive been out of work for 3 weeks, and im bored to tears. I have a house to clean, and a kid to take care of. I am just very frustrated. But to the main reason Im writing this, other then to vent, does anyone know what the list of foods would be that you arent supposed to eat when you have dvt's? I know theres a long list, but I cant seem to find it anywhere on here.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well today I went back to the doctor. I have to be off of work for ten more days, and they have to adjust my blood thinner meds.Financially I dont know how Im going to do that, but i guess it all works out. My symptoms were as follows, I had swelling in my calf, my ankle, and eventually pain. The pain was pretty bad. My leg also felt very hot. It seemed the more I did, the more it hurt. So if you have any thoughts that you might have a clot, dont waste time, get it checked right away, and if you think you do have one, stay off of your leg. I cannot stress that enough. If you dont, and it is a clot, it can break loose and go to your lungs or heart. I have had one in my lungs in the past, and it hurts worse then the leg. So please be careful. check out this site too. http://www.clotcare.com/clotcare/dvt_awareness_month_marc...

Hi F.-

You must be SO overwhelmed! I'm doing a search for the food-list info you were asking about right now and I will post an answer as soon as I find it. If it's ever been in print, I'll probably find it.

I have a question for you, though. Did you have any symptoms that warned of the DVT? Hopefully it's just hypochondria, but I have had some very wierd, intermitent, sharp pains in my legs that I've never had before. If you have any insight, I would really apreciate it. Doctors are an expensive hassle I'd rather avoid unless it's necessary.

Hi F.,

As far as food goes, you want to stay away from anything that is high in potassium. Which would be greens and bananas, etc. If you search for foods of that nature, you should get a good idea. If your blood gets too thin, your Dr. gives you a shot of vitamin K+. That is basically potassium, and it thickens it up. Obviously, you are looking to thin it. You might also want to google your specific anti coagulant, and you should be able to find a list that way also. Of course, worse comes to worse...call your Dr. and speak with his/her nurse, and they will have a list handy to go over with you. Good Luck!

I am so sorry for you and will keep your family in my prayers. Would you mind posting your symptoms? I have had a swollen leg now for about a month and have been taking prednasone because the doctor thought it was from an allergic reaction that I had to a medication. There has not been any pain until the past few days and now I am worried that I may have a bloodclot, I have an appointment Monday morning.

Wanted to say that after your response Friday I went to the emergency room and they agreed that I had every symptom of a bloodclot in my leg. They drew blood and did an ultrasound but it came back clear although they said it was hard to pick up a bloodclot below the knee where my pain is. I am on "light duty" this weekend and have to go back for another ultasound Monday if the swelling and pain don't go away. Thanks for your post, it was a great help!
