So What Happened?

I am new to this site, don't know how to reply, so adding comments to what happens section

NYICU started NeoSure ( fortifying breast milk with 22 calories) 15 days prior to discharge. My son was not comfortable, he was constipated, I raised the concern that time itself but they said he is adjusting to formula. After coming home - within 10-15 days, he became very uncomfortable, he started crying after feed, spitted couple of times , then it was just silent reflux which was really v v uncomfortable. He was gagging, heavy breathing, not sleeping. Pediatrician changed the formula to Nutriamigen, but same thing continued.

Pediatrician referred us to GI, GI didn't help much with formula but we started zentac to him. He had done better when he was just on breastmilk but wasn't gaining much - was not losing weight though.

I researched and asked GI for organic formula , which too didn't work. Then asked GI about Neocate, gave 60 ml per day for 8 days. He cried a lot one of those days, didn't sleep whole day.
Around 7days of trying, he started breathing like asthama patient. So I stopped giving him NeoCate.

I would rather not give him any formula but I need to supplement the breast milk. I am drying up, my son doesn't latch, he has got mild tongue tied which we don't want to operate.

I am trying all possible option to build up the supply. I got my period back in the 2 nd month after c section, that could b major reason to reduce the supply. Also, taking care of fussy child day n night, all alone has taken the toll on my heath too.
I am exclusively pumping every 3 hours. 2 or 2 n half hourly pumping is not realist. Because my son gets hungry every 2 hours and recently every 1 n half hour, he just eat 60 ml at a time. So I m feeding him 10-12 times in 24 hours.

Major concern about formula is milk based formula gives him more reflux, other special formula gave him heavy breathing.
I scare if I continue with formula, he may start breathing problems.

Please let me know if you guys need more information. Appreciate your time for responding to me. Thank you so much !!

What's wrong with formula? I would trust it more than I would trust hemp seed milk. If hemp seed milk is anything like rice milk and almond milk, there's almost no protein in it, so it would be a really bad choice.

My granddaughter was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy around 6 months old 15 years ago. Her mom used Alimentum successfully.

I suggest you talk with the pediatrician and/or a dietician before you try anything that is not a formula for babies. Formulas contain many nutrients that aren't in milk substitutes such as hemp.

How long did you feed a formula? Babies often don't like new formulas. It takes time for their body to adjust.
What reactions seemed to indicate that the formulas didn't work? Trying two many too often can mess with babies adjustment.

Do not give baby hemp milk. It doesn't have the nutrition your baby needs to grow and be healthy.

Talk to your doctor. That is the only answer anyone here can give. Talk to your doctor.
There are prescription formulas, there is donor milk banks for breast milk. There are options
Talk to your doctor and find a solution.

Given the fact that he is a micropremie, I would strongly suggest discussing this with your doctor rather than relying on the answers found here. You'll need to make sure his digestive tract is properly developed to handle it. If not, the doctor can recommend a different supplement that he won't be allergic to.

From what I've found, they say it's ok at 7 to 9 months but they also recommend to keep up with the breast feeding.
I wouldn't try it at 3 months.
I'd work with your doctor to find something your child can eat and I'd also work with a lactation consultant to help you keep your breast feeding going as long as you can.

Additional:
If the tongue tied business is interfering with breast feeding, then it needs to be fixed/snipped.
(Why don't you want to operate?)
It heals up very quickly.
Once he can latch on properly, he can better stimulate your breasts and your milk supply should increase - and you won't have to supplement.
If he was a preemie at 26 weeks, and he's 3 months old now - then he's really just now at the point where most babies are born at about the 40 week mark - so he's really just like a newborn - and his growth and weight gain will be just like a newborn as will be his feeding pattern (every 2 hours) - and you can expect this will continue for another 3 months.
Taking care of a baby is exhausting - and even more so for a preemie.
Have your husband (or other family member or a sitter) feed with a bottle while you catch a few hours of sleep every so often.
Your baby needs to eat - and you're the best food/milk source - do what ever you have to do to make it work.
Drink a lot of water, eat lots of oatmeal and try fenugreek to help boost your milk supply.

Welcome to mamapedia!!

Congratulations on your baby boy!!

Your son was born at 26 weeks??? And has no complications? That's great!

DO NOT give your son ANYTHING that a pediatrician or lactation consultant has not said is OKAY. There are a lot of great people on this site - but telling you it's OKAY to give Hemp Seed Milk to my premature baby is NOT something I'd ask strangers.

You need to watch YOUR diet if you are breast feeding. Pump to see what you are getting out. WHY does the doctor want him on formula anyway?? It's confusing his little system, I would think. Especially if they are saying he has milk protein allergies. How did they come to this conclusion? My premie son was a spitter-upper too. He was 4 weeks early with pneumonia. He might be constipated because too many things are being given to him and his system is tied in knots trying to figure it out.

I know you want to help him. Please talk to your lactation consultant and pediatrician before giving hemp seed milk!

Good luck!

I'd be concerned about the nutrient content of hemp seed milk and whether you can find something your child's doctor approves for a preemie. I sympathize with the problems with allergies to formula - have you tried soy formulas and those for allergic babies? It would help to know what you've already discussed with your pediatrician and what you have ruled out as a problem. I'm an educator in food science and we work with lots of babies and young kids who have allergies, Failure to Thrive and other issues, and lots of babies are given a complete food supplement in the neonatal departments of hospitals. So there are safe alternatives for the vast majority of babies. If your baby can't tolerate that, it would help to know it, but if he's only had problems with typical commercial, grocery store formulas, you have many other options that work well as an adjunct to breast feeding. If you can provide more info, I'm sure we can be of more help.

Talk to a lactation consultant about your diminishing supply. You should also look into taking herbal supplements for increasing breast milk supply. I took More Milk Plus and Goat's Rue with both kids. They're available on Amazon.

As for the hemp milk, my pediatrician suggested it for my daughter when she was 12 months old because cow's milk was causing her to be badly constipated. Hemp milk may have helped a little. However, in your case, since your baby is still an infant, I would speak to your pediatrician before doing anything -- I couldn't stress this enough.

I am truly not trying to be mean, okay? This is obviously a huge issue. I'd have him to a specialist when this first started happening. If it's effecting his breathing why in the world isn't he on a feeding tube or something with some special mixture going directly in his tummy?

He needs to eat but he's getting a few days of this and a few days of that. He can't get used to anything in that amount of time but he CAN have a reaction, like you've stated.

It sounds like he can nurse though, right? Then you need to do everything you can to get more milk, drink that odd sounding tea, do stuff to increase the milk flow.

As for food, it's nasty flavored goo that has zero nutrition in it. That's from the company too. I called them to ask a question and the lady told me if the food was near the expiration date, even still good, to toss it. They have minimal nutrition in them to begin with then the lights, the air, just bumping the jar/lid can cause microbes to enter the jar.

It's flavored goo.

Here's how it goes.

My baby is taking too many bottles or nursing too long so let's give him food too.

Give them baby food, baby likes the flavor so they eat it all up. Baby gets no nutrition in it's body so even though it's full it's starving so they want more. They get fat and everyone thinks they're good eaters when in fact they're starving for nutrients.

They eat and eat and eat then mom decides they're eating so well so let's stop formula or breast milk even more and feed them even more. Cutting out their ONLY nutrition.

Always give the baby formula or let them nurse til they're full first, until they're a year old.

Table food isn't as bad as baby food so if you do have to feed them food please cook it yourself, from scratch, then blend it and have good stuff in it.

I'd still have that baby at some sort of specialist to make sure they're getting enough nutrients and they don't need some drastic resolution.

Please don't without approval from your ped.

Babies' digestive systems are very fragile. You could end up destroying his bowels.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. He is an extreme preemie and there are usually a lot of complications. If you have a Children's Hospital that you can access, do that. Also work with a breastfeeding coach. You can possibly up your supply.

Another thing to do is to talk to a preemie feeding specialist about using the kind of bottle that babies with cleft palates use. You could pump with a HOSPITAL pump (they work much better than store bought ones) and then feed him with that specialized nipple. They don't have to work hard to suck on that type of nipple.
