OK...totally embarrassing question: Have any of you other mommies had to have a hemorrhoid removed? After birthing my 4th child last year, I am totally ruined down there. I went to a colorectal surgeon last week and he said I definately have to have surgery. He does not believe in laser removal because he said the pain and recovery is the same and the cost is double. I know I should have a second opinion, I just don't want to have to do another humiliating exam again! help!!

What can I do next?

My friend had the same problem and she went to a naturalpath (or?) and was told to drink aloe vera juice- she did and they went away, so before you undergo painful surgery, look into this further. This is what I found online doing a quick search. Good luck!

With limited success from many over the counter products, people are now looking for alternative remedies for hemorrhoids. There are many alternatives that can help in reducing pain and inflammation and possibly get rid of hemorrhoids.

The purpose of this article is to provide you remedies for hemorrhoids. Before we talk about the alternatives, let us understand this disease better. Due to excess pressure and strain, the veins in your anus and rectum get swollen with lot of pain and discomfort. If you have a swelling or a lump in your rectal or anal area you must get it checked by a doctor immediately to confirm that it is hemorrhoids only. Here are two very powerful alternatives

1) One of the best remedies for hemorrhoids is the herb witch hazel. This herb is found in North America and Europe. This herb is available in various forms. It is available as herbal tea, as a supplement, as an ointment and as a liquid astringent.

Witch hazel has excellent cleansing astringent effects. Use a witch hazel ointment or the liquid astringent and apply it to your hemorrhoids three times a day. Witch hazel not only helps in healing hemorrhoids but also helps in strengthening the veins.

Aloe Vera has powerful antioxidants and amino acids that help in healing hemorrhoids quickly and reduce the inflammation caused by the swollen veins fast. My husband just had one removed about a month ago. He didn't have the laser, the doctor cut it out. The procedure took less than 10 minutes. They use a local anesthetic, which numbs the area for a bit. We made the mistake of taking our time getting his main meds filled, and once the local wore off he was in ALOT of pain. Once the pain meds kicked in, he was much better. Still hurt, but not as bad. He took alot of warm baths to help with the pain. He was fine after about a week. As for the humiliating exam, these doctors do this all day...to them you're just "another butt"! After all the pain my husband dealt with before and during the recovery period, he's so happy he had it removed, and doesn't have to worry about it coming back. Good luck!

Hi K.

I was lucky and did not have your problem. However, my mother-in-law had it I believe with every one of her 6 kids. My hubby also was about your age when he had to have the surgery. I can tell you that though the pain after the surgery was not fun, the relief after he healed was worth it (or so he said).

Having had 4 kids, the after pain may not be as bad as it is for the males who have not gone through child birth!

After my 4th son, I have the same problem. I went to a proctologist and the exam was embarassing, as you describe. The one I went to, however, said that only one of those needed to be removed - and then went on to say that the recovery after the surgery time would be the same as if I used an ointment to shrink it. I elected the ointment. I do think it's worth it to get a 2nd opinion. Those doctors are used to people being embarassed and there has to be some of them that are better with people.

A friend of mine had to have the surgery after her first child. I would suggest a second opinion if you aren't sure. Also, make sure you do your research on your surgeon. She had to have it done twice because the first surgeon didn't do the greatest job. She thought the recovery was better than the pain before the surgery.
