Help...I Didn't Wash Out the Ball Jars...should I Have Before Use??

I am making hot chocolate mix and cookie mixes for teachers, therapists, instructors. I didn't wash out the Ball Jars when I made the first set of hot chocolate....however, the third case I opened had this awful smell inside. All of the jars in this case did. I am very sensitive to smell....and don't THINK I noticed any smell from the two cases (of 12 each) before.

Should I just dump out about $20 worth of hot chocolate mix (and have to rebuy) and wash them and start over??? Sigh...

Of course I washed the smelly ones in the dishwasher and now have to wait until tomorrow to finish as I want to make sure they are completely dry.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

S, I dumped it all....I would just worry too much. I don't know why I think I can do these crafty things. I think to myself...wow, I can do that, it will look just like the picture, it will be so easy, it will save me money! When, in fact, it is all the opposite!! I would be better just buying everyone gift cards! Oh well, lesson learned and I hope next time I start doing something like this, my husband will stop me ;)

Oh, and it is $20 worth of ingredients down the drain, and now I have to buy another $20 worth again :( Making 36 jars though.

I'd start over. If it was just for myself I wouldn't worry but 20 bucks isn't work possible making someone sick

Maybe it's just me but I would have washed everything before I started to make sure everything was sanitary. Especially for food products.

You did the right thing in starting over. It's just not worth the risk.

Bummer! I'm so sorry you had to scrap it and start over. Probably will help you sleep better, though. If it helps, I do things like this a lot! Things always seem so much better/easier in theory. In practice, it never goes quite right. But I think it's an awesome idea, and I think your recipients will love them! You keep crafting, this was just a fluke- and you did the right thing!

You did the right thing! Super gift idea, but it surely wouldn't be as appreciated if anyone had become ill. One of those life lessons!

As others have said you did do the right thing buy starting over. Always wash items for food before you put in the ingredients. You never know how or where they were stored.

Don't give up on the original gift idea. Your heart is in the right spot. All will turn out well and believe in yourself that you can do these things.

As a rule of thumb you should always prewash anything like that.

At this point, I don't know what I would do if I were in your shoes.
