Help with Triming Nails

I have always been able to trim my daughter's nails while she nursed and fell asleep. We are getting close to her one-year birthday and I will not be nursing much beyond that point. I am not sure how I am going to trim her nails when she stops nursing. She has never let me do it while she is awake and pulls her hands and feet away from me whenever I have tried. I trim her nails at least once a week and I am nervous about what I am going to do when she stops nursing.

What can I do next?

Wait until she is passed out, or just after a bath,w hen the nails are soft and subtle. This way, there is no real surprise, no pain, and you can make it seems like fun, with faces, gasps and all kinds of fun noises, as you do it.

I hope this helps you. Just make sure you have a firm grip in case she gets excited, or wakes up on you. Be prepared to get child-like, and make it seem like you woke her up for a good thing. You don't want to cut her, so make sure you got the grip, when doing it. Just in case!

Good luck, and best wishes.

When my daughter was younger (she's now 2) I always took the nail clippers with me when we went out for walks in the stroller - if she happened to fall asleep I could do a quick nail trim. The car works too. (It's harder to access to her nails when she's sleeping in the crib.)
More recently I've also found it works when we're sitting together on the bed looking at books or my jewelry box - she sees the nailclippers on my bedside table and wants to hold them. I make her a deal that she can hold them if she lets me cut one nail. The first nail tends to cause squirms & squeals, but then she gets to hold the clippers, and we keep trading back & forth with each nail and before you know it it's done. It helps that she's distracted by the necklaces or books.
Hope that helps! FYI, we usually go 2-3 weeks between nail trims -you may be able to stretch it longer than a week.

Keep nail clippers in the car. When she conks out in the car take the opportunity to snip those little nails!

Since most little girls want to do everything mama does, I do my nails first and let her "help" then she wants me to do hers too! Sometimes she wants her nails painted too when I do mine and I tell her we can't paint them until we trim them. If all else fails do it when she's asleep!

Hi there...I am actually a nail tech...by profession. the best way to cut my lil boys nails is to count 1(cut)2 (cut) and let him try to cut mine. I cant use baby clippers, They are too hard to see(the itty bitty nails) and handle. I use some that are angled. They are by tweezerman and are beige..... I would maybe put stickers on them and make them look girlie. She will sense your hesitation and will"dread" it too....Just be matter-of-factly and that this is her time. It Has to be done so make it fun...maybe even put on her favorite music to distract her.Or sing a special song....
I have a precious lil boy 2 in March and a 17 yr old girl graduating in May! Yikes!Good luck!

Hi H....
I agree with these other ladies. But sometimes it was just too hard to cut their nails when they woke up from their nap. And then we they stopped napping we needed another plan. Then when when all else failed, we turned on Blues Clues or Dora. Captivated by the lovely animated shows, we were able to quickly clip all 20 nails. We have two daughters that are now 5 and 3, and we still let them watch their show while we cut their nails, and now paint them too. Painting their nails is how we're breaking the thumb sucking, since you can't put polish in your mouth.
Good luck!! They grow up so fast, and the next thing you know, they will be asking for the car keys.
