Help with Toddler Eczema

My 2 1/2 year old has been diagnosed with eczema. He only has it on his face, and it doesn't itch. It's more bothersome to me than it is to him. We are currently using Desonate, a prescription the pediatric dermatologist gave us, and it doesn't work consistently. His face sometimes gets better and sometimes worse. I haven't found any particular trigger that may be making it worse. Does anyone have experience with toddler eczema or know of successful ways to treat it? I'm desperate! Thanks so much!

R., my 3 year old has struggled with it for a very long time. We had her allergy tested and found many things that she was allergic to that we had NO idea. The doctor said that if we gave her zyrtec she would be fine. She wears 100% cotton pjs at night, does not take hot baths (warm), does not dry off with a towel, and uses dove unscented soap. When we do those things...her skin is amazingly better! Seriously...if we forget her zyrtec for a day or two and let her chow down on tortilla chips at On the Border, her eczema flares up again. It is worth a try!

A friend's son had eczema so bad his skin would crack and bleed. The ointment was $50.00/ tube and he was going through a tube in a week. Her sister was in to homeopothay and suggested essential oils... Rosemary and Lavender. They put several drops of each in his bathwater every evening, and a week later he had NO signs anywhere. He was 12 or 13 and his only complaint was that he smelled like a GIRL! LOL It might be worth a try... ?

Good luck.

My son has had problems especially with his hands. I have tried many varieties of lotion and nothing has worked better than Renew by Melaleuca. I love the lotion myself but it has worked really well for him and it does not have a smell. I have some samples if you would like to try.

I'm sorry...I know the battle all too well. My daughter HAD it for her first 3 years of life and we went through it all as far as products, prescriptions, supplements, allergy testing, etc. The thing with ezcema is that it DOES come and go until, hopefully, it just goes and doesn't come back. We used several prescription medications, all of which I'm not sure if they could be used on the face...you might be limited there. We also swear by Borage Children's Skin Therapy by SHIKAI. I have found it in health stores, and some grocery stores that have a natural/orgranic section.

R.,
Some have been helped with Shaklee's baby lotion. It has a money back guarantee. You can find it at http://www.shaklee.net/healthforlife
The children's chewable supplement called Mighty Smart might also help because it contains essential omega fatty acids.

My heart breaks for you, my 3 yr old has battled with this since he was around 8 months. We have used every prescription steriod cream they make and followed everything his Dr. told us to do and avoid. Nothing was working! The steriod creams would make the infected area better, but would never go away completly. He had staph infections sever times due to scratching and it is a very scary place to be. In september, I changed his vitamins, laundry soap and body lotion, and after 2 weeks it was gone. Not once sicne has he had to take allergy meds or his rescue inhaler for asthma either. I now teach Free workshops every week in McKinney to help educate other famalies with children just like ours. Please contact me if you would like to get the details.

Our 21 month old has eczema, but it's pretty mild. The dermatologist recommended Vanicream after baths which we do every evening. She still has some break through eczema. The other recommendation was Aquaphor, but its greasy nature can be a problem at times (though I personally love it).

I'd ask a pharmacist what else is available and call the dermatologist to see if you can try another product.

I have a feeling it's like psoriasis - you can effectively manage it at times, but you'll have to deal with some break throughs for a while.

Good luck!

I have a 2 1/2 year old with eczema too! His is mainly on his hands and feet! We got a topical steroid that helps with bad flare-ups but I also use Vanicream on a daily basis. It's a thick lotion you get in the pharmacy (over the counter but you have to ask for it). Also, we give him good bacteria supplements like lactinex and acidophilus and that balances things out too. Also, our pediatrician specializes in eczema and she's wonderful... Dr. Bain at Healthy Kids Pediatrics in Frisco. Good luck!
