Help with Smelly Towels!!!

Hi! I have a question that I'm hoping someone out there has had a similiar experience with and can give some advice. All of our colored towels have a mildew smell to them once they get wet, no matter how much they are washed and no matter what kind of laundry soap, farbic softner, etc. is used. Our white towels don't have the smell, but I wash them in hot water and add bleach. They come out smelling very fresh and clean. I've also tried using bleach for colors. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I hate the thought of having to throw away all of our colored towels, as they are fairly new, and only use white towels. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I heard the Queen of Clean address this. She said use Odors Out you can find it at PetsMart as well as Target I believe. It's an enzyme based deodorizor. She said to put it in let the towels agitate a little to move it about then you can let them soak overnite, then launder as usual. She says it works ! She's the Queen !

Hi! I had the same problem. Do you have a front loading washer? That was my problem. They don't always drain well. And I also discovered it was the detergent I was using (Tide). I ran the washer thru 2 washes with 1/2 cup of Cascade and one cup bleach in hot water. We also took the washer apart and cleaned out the lint in the hoses, etc. It worked! I got that advice from the Queen of Clean. Good luck!

Hello L.!

I, too, live in Surprise and am expecting my first! Nice to meet you.

In regard to your towels, try the following: wash the items with your regular detergent and laundry softener but also add distilled white vinegar and one of the following - Borax, Arm n Hammer Washing Soda, or Arm n Hammer baking soda. All of these items are very reasonably priced and available at Walmart. Personally, I'd go for the Borax first. It really does wonders.

Also, make sure the dryer dries the items completely. If towels come out a bit wet, the smell can set it.

Good luck!

I would put those towels on an auto soak setting w vinegar as well as adding vinegar to the liquid detergent while washing. Maybe 1/2 detergent 1/2 vinegar. Then I would use a second rinse to top it off. I hope it helps. I worked for me.
