Help with Room Decor

Howdy,
I know a lot of you crafty ladies out there hopefully will give me a hand. We have 3 bedrooms upstairs and a few months back I started redecorating the spare one to turn into my office. It was going to be ocean/seashell themed so the walls were painted ocean/robin egg blue. My issue is that the room is on a dormer and the walls are stucco, so matching the ceiling paint to the wall paint is impossible so a wall paper border is required (God I love old houses). Any ways, now that I am expecting a new little one in December we have decided to forgo the office and have my 6/7 year old move into that room. He does not want to repaint it but we have NO IDEA what theme the wal paper border theme could be for a boy in a robin egg blue room. I have gotten on line to research borders but have not had any luck. A sports theme (per son) and skateboarding theme 9per husband) are also not an option.

So, what on earth boy theme could go with this color room? Help!

What can I do next?

Hi Jodi-

What about an airplane theme or space theme, as in "into the wild blue yonder"? We have a rocket ship border from Somersault (ordered through ToysRUs), but is probably too young for a 6 year old. Good luck!

Jodi - we did for my son who does not like sports my husband carried the blue all the way up the ceiling and he then painted clouds on it his ceiling was kind of stuccoie too. Then we did a light colored paper on the bottom and an animal themed border. When it was done I have to tell you I loved it! Still we have the cloud up there and I find his room so relaxing. Maybe you could do clouds or sky w/ planets.....or something like that.

Three thoughts -
1st - my son's room is light blue and we painted a beige border around the room at the chair molding level. Looks cool. We went with a Space theme so he would grow into it. Found the quilt in Land of Nod and went cheap with the decor (Target and HOmegoods).

2nd - my sis-in-law did her sons room with scientific stuff. She has a huge Periodic table on the wall and pics of Einstein and stuff. Very cool...

3rd - go with Karate/ninja stuff. Sounds like he loves it!!

Hi Jodi,
If you have to use a border and can't find one in a particular theme, why not just get a 'paintable' border -the ones with an embossed print on them? This would be a good representative for your 'older' home, but also, you could paint it a solid color & then theme the room with accessories - so you're not tied into anything as your son grows older. And brown (a masculine color) goes wonderful with robin's egg blue!

Can you put in a molding instead of a wallpaper border? Why not just go with bright colors and add accents with something he likes...bright cars, bugs, animals. Get a bright comforter and rugs...all sorts of stores have stuff with stripes, ect.

ok if he likes basebal you could have a marrow painted on the walls of a baseball diamond with players and aa ball hit out in the field with sun up in the sky. But than you said something about Karate. So if hes into karate maybe you could get someone to paint like a little china town and do like a oriental thing that has stuff with karate involved. Hang some award he has gotten up.

HI Jodi,
If the walls are stucco, where is the border going? I would think that would be too bumpy. Why not try a crown moulding painted white or an accent color to make the transition, or a different color on the ceiling. If you have to leave the ceiling blue, I have seen white fluffy clouds painted on the ceiling- looks great.
Have fun,
M.

i would do the ocean/seashell theme that you orginally planned in there. there is nothing wrong with that for a boy. have him go to the store with you, and pick out the border he wants of those themes. then he will think he is a big boy getting to help his room.

you can even buy those wall stickers in sharks and fish. they can go on and off the wall no problem, and doesn't destroy anything. plus he can move them as he would want to

Rather than using a border that will outgrow each of them, why not try a painted stripe of a different color, or possibly a piece of crown moulding. Just a thought

How about a plane theme? You could have vintage planes or fighter jets, with clouds etc.

I have my 5 year old sons room painted in a ocean blue and have a fish mural on one wall, with fish decals swimming away from it through out the room. My son loves fish and it grows with him through the years.

My son is 5 and when we bought our house a few months ago he wanted a blue room (I insisted on light since I don't want to have a dark room, it depresses me). So anyway, I found a "fathead" of spider man and my son really digs it and it goes with the blue wall! Then we put a red blanket on his bed and red shelves on the walls. Someday when he outgrows spider man we can do an "americana" theme without much changing because the spider man sticker will peel right off and there shouldn't need to be many changes to the other decor. Check out fathead.com for easy to remove stickers that come in thousands of styles :) Good Luck!

what about the ocean... A room filled with sharks, whales, octupi, and all those other big man eaters that kids like to read books about... :-)

Or an island beach theme... Although that may be more of a girly theme... Ok, muscle beach ocean view. lol

Perhaps your best bet would be to forgo making it "match" and just let the kid pick out what he likes... Put it up and in a few years he will want that skateboarding/ sports/ more grown up room... Right now he may be happy with race cars, trains, etc... But in 2 or 3 yrs what ever he/ you pick will be soooooo baby to him. :-)

Hi Jodi,

If you get down to the Flint area at all stop in to T&C Decorative Painting on Miller Rd. (right across from Genesee Valley and next to Harbor Freight). Tammy is the owner and she is very talented. She will help you match colors and can help you with ideas for a theme. She also has stencils and some stick on wall decals that you might be able to use.

Good luck!

Take a look on fatheads.com. We painted my son's room a blue grey and put a Batman Fathead on the wall. It looks really cool. They have race cars, superhero's, sports figures etc... They run about $100 but it' a really cool thing to have on the wall. Good luck with #2!

jodi; i dont know why you feel you HAVE to have a border put up, if the room is light blue now, make the ceiling yellow like the sun or sky, my boys room was that color and i painted clouds on them it looked great, i cut out a cardboard in a cloud shape, little bumps all around and then i held it up to the wall and spraypainted white around it, it gave a cool effect, if the ceiling was a contrasting color you dont need a border, what color is the carpet ? if carpet is one color like say red, or even green you can do the four colors, red, blue , yellow, green etc, you dont need a theme, but you can still do the beach sand theme, with shells, and stuff, maybe whales or fish ? dont feel you have to settle on a border, make your own border with paint, just have fun, the kid will just be happy with any ole room, and remember painting my boys rooms and they dont really care that things match or whatever its us moms that do, ahahah either way , you can make your own border with a splatter effect, dip your fingertips in paint of a color and fling our fingers in the direction of the splatter you want it do this till you have gone around the room, this can loook great, just have fun, ive also seen where they take the boys hand print have him put his hand in the paint, and put his hand on the wall, if the walls are blue and the ceiling yellow, like the sky you can put a border of grass at the bottom of wall ? heck have fun with it, dont look at old houses and bad to deal with loook at it as anew way to design i had a old house and i painted a crooked border on purpose, on this wal the border went up at a diagonal, and then apppeared to bounce down at another angle on other wall it was one continual border but different on each wall, i would even bounce it off the ceiling like angle it across a ceiling part to join to other wall, any way if you would like to discuss more feel free to contact me thanks D. s

Boats! Why not stick with the water theme and just expand it a bit. Sailboats and ocean stuff. Very nautical and cool.

Not sure why you think you NEED a border... you can decorate without wall paper, by adding pictures, and other wall hangings. A very cool sailboat wall run would be pretty cool.

Good luck! congrats on the new baby!

Jodi; I was looking for this web site and finally found it. It carries transfers of all sorts. The company name is: Tatouage Design. Now I haven't looked at it in awhile, but they did carry every subject and design to transfer on to the walls, easy on, easy off. And I'm almost positive that they have borders. But if you want to get rid of that "popcorn" ceiling, this is what my husband did. He sprayed it with water using a spray bottle, took a wide metal scrapper, like for drywall, and scrapped off the stucco into a metal dust pan. I hated that stuff. Our ceiling looks great now. Let me know if you go to the site for the transfers and find what you're looking for. Best to you! J.

Get a wall poster/sticker thing and do spider man swinging across the sky. We did blue walls on all but one, painted a brick pattern with textured paint on the 4th and went with a firehouse theme (colors came from bedding and pictures), this will later be changed to superman/spiderman crashing through the brick wall or something. Aquarium theme, Paint the sky a night blue(dark) and put up stars and do an astro theme.
