I had a baby 7 months ago and was diagnosed with ppd so I was put on Wellbutrin SR. Well, since then my medicaid has ended and I dont think that the medicine is working (I have been taking it for 4 months). Now I dont know if I should stop taking it and if I do, what my options are if I dont have insurance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I called Denton County MHMR and they told me that they dont treat ppd and I called CCA and they cant see me until November.

What can I do next?

I'm truly sorry to hear that. And I'm even more sorry that the state can't figure out how to help. That's pretty typical. And here it's one of the most serious problems for new moms. I was on Wellbutrin through my pregnancy and for awhile afterwards. Then I switched over to Prozac so I could get the "more affordable" generic form called "Fluoxetine".

And as far as MHMR goes, just tell them "depression" and leave out the PPD part. They can treat depression as I helped a friend go through them for that.

Feel free to write back if you need further suggestions. Do you attend a church? If so you might check with them and let them know your situation. I know my church would help.

I've sent a prayer up for you. I know how awful and debilitating depression can be, especially with a newborn. (I work doing pr/marketing for a baby swaddling blanket. www.miracleblanket.com)

Hi Y.,

If you decide that you will stay on the medication I would encourange you to check out www.mybenefitsplus.com/40358744 where they offer prescription benefits since your medicaid has been cancelled. You can get a discount on the medication. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

Hi Y.. I wouldn't go off the medicine without consulting the physician who wrote the prescription for you. Was it your OBGYN? Then talk to him/her or the nurse. They may be able to suggest an alternative for you. I'm sure they've run across this before.

It's my understanding that for PPD, you should stay on the meds at least 6 months. And going off some of the depression meds requires weening, as they can be somewhat addictive. You really should talk to a professional.

Take care and good luck

Baylor has a program called Baylor Assist Program that helps people without insurance as long as you financially qualify. Call any Baylor Health Center and inquire about applying for Baylor Assist. I'm not sure what the cut-off income is, but you can at least ask. Also, once you see a physician, ask them about pharmaceutical assistance programs (i.e. http://www.rxassist.org/) that can provide you with your medicines free of cost, as long as you financially qualify. I do recommend that you be followed up if you have PPD. This is a serious disease after pregnancy and stopping your medicine abruptly may make you sick.
