I have this and its very common. But you need to make sure you are seeing an Endocrinologist. Not a regular doctor. Endo doc's will do more than regular testing. Good Luck. And take you meds. You will notice a change for the good.

I went to the doctor and they took some blood to test for hyperthyroidism. I'm always tired and continue to loose weight no matter how much I eat. I have a doctors appointment next week to follow up for the blood test and I was wondering if any of you guys had any experience in this area. Also my mom and younger sister have been diagnosed with HYPO thyroidism.I'm really confused over what levles are normal and stuff... Any responses are appreciated. Thanks! =)

I hope that your doctors testing for more that Thyroid issues. If you have family with Hypothyroidism, you are more than likely to have it as well. Not gaining weight may be a symptom too.
There are also some yahoo groups that address different health issues. This might help while you are waiting for your test results.
I have been taking a supplement since March (my kiddos since May, and my husband since September), which has improved our health dramatically. Although I do not have hyperthyroidism, I have spoken to several people who have gotten amazing results with this illness because of the supplement. (For us, the results have been with migraines, allergies, cholesterol, diabetes, and immunity.) Let me know if you'd like more info. Good luck to you!
Dear Trish,

Hi Trish,
I too was originally diagnosed with hyperthyroidism despite many other members of my family having hypothyroidism. Apparently, I found out years later after informing new doctors that I was diagnosed with hyper, and not receiving the correct treatment, hypo can start out as hyper and then swing into hypo. I have had this disease for 11 years now and had all sorts of problems and misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. Make sure you find yourself a very good endocrinologist. So many general doctors try to treat thyroid problems and they really shouldn't. It seems such an easy fix with medication, and it certainly does respond well to medication, but it's a whole lot more complicated than that on a long term basis.
My hyper was very quickly and easily treated with a medication called (something like this anyway!) Propylthuriocil. It worked like magic despite the endocrinologist advising me to have radiation treatment or an operation to remove my thyroid as her first choices instead of the medication. Thankfully, I listened to my instincts and didn't have the operation because, as it turned out, I now don't have any thyroid function naturally anyway. It would have been a complete waste of an operation!
Anyway, be sure you keep a close eye on yourself in the years to come. One endocrinologist told me that if your family members have hypo, it is likely you will too. Once I officially was diagnosed with hypo, and received the usual medication, Synthroid or other similar drugs, I responded well and felt much better. Over the years though, despite perfect blood test results, I just didn't feel well enough. My sister had the same problem. Finally, one doctor suggested we try Armour thyroid. It is real thyroid taken from pigs but processed in a lab just like any other prescription drug. This stuff has changed our lives. We both do soooo much better on this than the regular synthetic drug. This is just a tip for the future if and when you swing to hypo.
Good luck. Hang in there. It can be horrible until you get the correct treatment but wonderful when you do and get back to feeling normal again. I sure hope you find resolution quickly.
