A.A.
That's a lot of stresses about a cake and a picture. Sorry, can't help. My guy just had cake at our house, with Daddy as a photographer. Cute, cheap, and stress free! Happy birthday to your little one!
My daughter has a cake smash photo session in the morning and I plan on making her a giant cupcake with the Wilton pan. I already did a few dry runs to see if I could do it. It turned out really cute except the edible liner I made out of candy melts keeps breaking!! I used one bag to make it. Should I use a bag and a half?! I really hope someone can help me with this! I have to travel about 20 minutes away and I'm really hoping the thing doesn't break on me. Also, what can I put it in to bring with me?
Her session is pretty early in the morning, so I'm wondering if I can bake the cake tonight? And how do I store it overnight? Or should I just get up early and bake it in the morning?
Sorry, I'm full of questions today.. This whole birthday situation has me stressed outtttt! Haha.

hmmmm, ok yes bake it tonight, you can add touches in the morning, I"ve never made one so I don't understand about the liner, I;m assuming that goes on after it bakes??? no idea if more would help your cracking prob or not
I would definitely go with a sturdy plastic box to hold it, or even a laundry basket if a plastic shoe box or something isn't big enough.
worse comes to worse it will still be a wonderful photo shoot!!! since it won't last much once your little one gets into it.
Hmm. I would suggest using fondant to make a liner instead. It is more pliable, so wouldn't break as easily. You can buy it pre-made, so all you have to do is unroll and cut it to shape. Maybe use a wooden spoon handle to press in and give it a folded look.
I think baking tonight would be good. Since you will be smashing it tomorrow, you can just store it on the counter in plastic wrap.
Transportation may be tricky. If you aren't going to be too detailed (10 minutes or so worth of decorating) I would transport it in the pan, and get there early to decorate tat the studio. (Make sure you call ahead and get the OK for that though...) I would be worried about the jostling causing the head to collapse under the weight of the frosting.
If you can't decorate it there, I would do it all tonight, and freeze it. Hopefully, that would give it enough strength to make the trip.
Another idea... For my DD's cake smash pictures, I made her a regular cupcake, and put that on top of a circular dish I had, that had a flat bottom. I decorated that, and it looked like a fancy two-tiered cake. The pics turned out great, and it was super easy to make and transport.
Looks like the secret might be two layers of the candy melts:

I would NOT wait until morning to do this project!
Good luck!
Bake it and freeze it. Take it out in the morning. Cake freezes beautifully.
As for the edible liner, freeze it and then wrap it in bubble wrap. Put it in a bag and transport it in an ice chest on top of ice.
Does it have to be an edible candy liner? Or can you make it like you would regular cupcakes and use something bigger, say a coffee liner?
I would definitely make it tonight. It will still be fresh in the morning and the frosting and such has a chance to really set. I always make mine the night before and store them in the oven. It's big enough and is air tight.
To transport, do you have help? Another adult could hold it on their lap while it sits on a big cookie sheet.
Good luck!
So let me see if I understand this, you make a cake shaped like a cupcake and then you use the same mold and put candy melts in it to make a liner?
It is breaking because the cake base is the same size as the exterior of the liner. About the only way I see it not breaking is if you remove the amount of cake needed from the base so that the base is the same size as the inside of the liner. Otherwise the pressure it places on the side will keep breaking the candy.
