Hi kristie:

how about stabbing a potato and keeping the knife in it and just throw it away with the garbage?

Freecycle.org

It's amazing. It's a nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. I have gotten many great items from people (some stuff brand new in the box!). I also give great stuff that I just didn't have the time to sell, didn't sell at my garage sale, or couldn't give to charity. Some times you just want the stuff GONE. I promise you will love it. Don't be discouraged by the free membership sign-up. There is a little back and forth of email approvals at first to weed out spammers.

Happy Freecycling as they say!

We also use Freecycle.org. No need to throw anything away these days. There is always someone out there who can use your old stuff...it helps out our neighbors, and reduces the amount of garbage we produce.

Another option is the easy donation. Every month I have someone coming to pick up for charity. Purple Heart, Vietnam Vets, Cancer Federation. It's a good way to force us to de-clutter. They tell you the day of pickup, just leave your stuff out of the porch, and they take it away.

Are they still any good? I give my stuff to VVA or Purple Heart. Do you have a rep in your area? A truck will come to your house on a scheduled pick up day. For more info you can go to www.vva.org.

IF they can still be used.. donate them to goodwill or something such like that.. Wrap in paper then like cardboard the sharp end ya know.. just tape around the handle.. NOt each one just group them what works best.. then put in a bag and take out to them Try to see if you can Hand them to somebody... IF not put a note on and maybe double bag them..

IF your area has a freecycle page on yahoo try that too... It will help somebody who may need them....

Many dont know about the page...

Take them to salvation army or thrift shop. A family could use them if they can't afford to buy brand new knives.

Kudo's to you though for thinking to NOT put them in the garbage!!! That really could have hurt someone!

Your town may have a recycling program in place w/ the contracted garbage collectors. Depending on the steel on the knife, it can sometimes be melted down. I would call the town or the recyclers.

If you choose not to go this route, tape blades w/ masking tape, wrap in cardboard and (masking) tape cardboard over it.

Give them to Goodwill. They have a section for cutlery and knives.. We always donate as much as we can so it doesn't end up in any landfill. Someones trash is always someones elses treasure or at least useful for a while!

There is a local freecycle group you could join--and give them to someone who needs them. type in rockford (or whatever city is close to you) freecycle in yahoo groups, it will get you there, then you need to join. I freecycle and give away my usable things I no longer want, and once in a while, someone posts something I need.

I wrap them up in old newspaper, or if your recycling them put them inside something. Roll them up in a frozen pizza box or something.
