I buy my pieces separately. I use all queen accessories but have a king size comforter so I get it to hang down more on the sides. I just use a simple white skirt so anything will go with it.
I am looking at new bedding sets for my queen size bed. Our current set is a queen and it's short on both sides. I've heard that some people buy a king size to make up for the "short" sides...but then I wonder what they do with the bedskirt, and the king size shams. I really don't want to buy 2 sets and mix them at double the cost. Any suggestions?

buy seperates or buy a set that matches the dust ruffle you have now. It does not have to be exactly alike- just not completely mismatch
HI
Measure the mattress and read labels. There are sheets made to fit the bigger mattresses. You just need to read the labels. If you can not find size dimensions on the label than do not by it. Sears and Penney's .com should have good selections. Also try Bed Bath and Beyond.com. I work retail and know that sheets for the bigger mattresses are out there, you are just more likely to find them on line than in a store. Most stores will give you free shipping if you spend more than $200.00 or go into the store and use one of there computers. I do use a king blanket on my Queen bed, but that has more to do with my husband steeling some of it in his sleep.
I hope that you can find something that you like.
I've seen matching bedding pieces (sheets, shams, ruffles) sold separately at Wal-Mart, Macy's, and every place in between. It will cost you more than if you go the "bed-in-a-bag" route where everything comes together, but it's still less than buying a queen set and a king set.
Also, I think (?) a sham is a sham is a sham (doublecheck the measurements), so your only issue might be the bedskirt.
What my husband and I have done is.... instead of using the blankets/comforters or whatever head to toe way like you normally would we turn them and use them side to side way. I normally buy King size comforters, Queen Bed skirts, If you buy seperates in sheets a fitted queen and a flat king makes it nicer. I tend not to buy Bedding Sets though.
We have a thick pillowtop queen mattress. When we got it I went to linen n things (not in business anymore I don't think) and got the queen sheets for deeper mattresses. It will say like 17 inches or around there probably. I would measure your thickness first and then go look for that size. I have a king sized heated blanket and we hate all the extra fabric on one size, so I wouldn't go that route. Just go to bed bath and beyond, kohls, or somewhere that has pricier sheets in sizes, not like Walmarts one size fits all. I think I bought our on clearance so they weren't too much $ either.
I don't use the pillow shams, so no help there..
But as far as the bed skirt goes, you take it in the middle (length wise) and make a pleat or fold. We did this when my daughter had full size skirt and we used it on her twin. Hope this makes sense.....
we had the same problem and i just bought the seperates a king sized comforter and top sheet and queen sized fitted sheet and bed skirt was a little more $$ to buy everything seperated but definately worth it my husband is a blanket hog it was either that or buy to comforters and he went for the extra money verses two comforters
Hi! I'd purchase King sheets that are just a set of sheets - no bed skirt & no pillowcases. Sheets don't have to exactly match your bed skirt – so there's no reason to purchase 2 sets in different sizes. Do you have a shop like TJ Max or Marshall's or Tuesday Morning in your location? They are great places to get quality sheets for cheaper. Even if a sheet set comes with a King pillowcase you can still use it (buy a larger pillow or sew the pillowcase smaller.) I have purchased Jersey sheets for $20 at TJ Max for a King.
Perhaps your mattress is just deeper in width than a typical mattress. You could also look for Queen sheets with a "deep pocket" that are deeper than your normal sheets. That may be more expensive, unless you look at a shop like I suggested before. I have never found deep sheets at Wal-Mart or Target, but you never know.
Good luck & happy shopping & sleeping!
