Hi everyone! This is my situation, I've completely stopped breastfeeding my 12 month old tot during the day. She eats everything from soup to rice and will have anything to drink as well like milk, homemade rice water, water, juices. Now when it comes to be night I will feed her her dinner and will put her to sleep. She goes to sleep around 8:30, but if i do not breast feed her she will cry and fuss until she gets tired. One night i had decided that i would completely stop breastfeeding, as it is no longer enjoyable and her doctor said she will be fine without it. I managed to put her to sleep without the fuss, but in the middle of the night she would wake and just cry because she wanted to be breast fed, she will cry non stop, all night, it is horrible and i hate to see her cry. Since that day i went back to feeding her at night but i do want to stop, she has two top teeth and two bottom ones and more are coming, my nipples are really sore and i really can't take it. I know it is just a habit of hers what can i do please help. I have a 3 yr. old son, which i breastfed as well, when i wanted to stop breat feeding him my MIL took him for 2 weeks and when he came back he had forgotten about my boobs. But that is no an option w/ my daughter.

One detail i forgot to add, my husband works at night so I'm on my own on this one. And I do give her rice water and or milk at night but it doesn't seem to stop her from waking. I think it is just a habit of hers to wake and nurse.

What can I do next?

Hi not to be judge mental but he should have been using a cup months. Breast milk may be best, but not the breast (In my opinion) don't slam me just yet, reason being breast milk can go in a bottle and a cup, and easy to get rid of, the breast is always there and the smell (not Bad) of a lactating mom is what the baby gets addicted to. it's hard to wean a child from something that is always at their disposal. At one toddlers should be having 3 meals a day, plus toddler snacks and a cup with meals and snacks, my 3 ate like this from 9 months. From 9 months to a year they only had one bottle a day, that was in the morning while i was preparing their cereal and the rest of the day they used a cup, but I started them on a cup as soon as they could sit up on their own, so when it was time to get rid of the bottle we had no issues. Hope this helps. J.

My son was about the same, only nursed at night until about 13 months, that last month he just did it less and less but we also started to give him rice milk during the day (did not introuce cow until closer to 2). I had the luxury of him sleeping with us and I just made sure I was available (dont want to hear it my choice) and he just stopped. I do agree with the suggestion of starting on a thursday coupled with daddy addressing the tot if possible and maybe introducing an altenative to milk such as rice milk or if you chose cow's milk.

Can your husband go in at night to sooth her? Whenever I want to wean a child from anything, I usually start on a Thursday, so that there are three nights before having to function at work on Monday morning (yes, I have to function on Friday, but that is easier than doing it in the middle of the week. Then, I do everything I can to let them cry it out. You have to be consistent and follow through. Expect the disrupted sleep for those few nights, and deal with it....it will make the rest of the following weeks sooo much better.

Hello R.,
You are not alone - this is a common challenge and can be fixed withiout having your Mother In Law take your daughter for a couple of weeks. It sounds like your precious baby girl has a nurse to sleep association, so I can help you help her say good-bye to these strategies and say hello to new ones. In a short period of time, we could have her sleeping 10 to 12 hours each and every night without needing you to get back to sleep if and when she wakes up in the night. You don't mention naps in your question, but I can also help you with her daytime sleep as well is that is an issue.
I get Mamapedia so that I can reach out to Moms like you to let you know that there is professional help out there.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Is she biting you? When my daughter was about a year old, she bit me a couple of times being playful, it hurt like Heck! Of course she was so upset at the idea of not being able to nurse anymore, that she never tried to bite again! Maybe if you tell her she can't nurse because she is biting, she'll stop? Just a thought...I'm sure you've tried everything, but that worked on my daughter. She's almost 3 and we still nurse a few minutes before bed, we both still love it, although I know the end will be soon, it's so sad! Good luck in whatever you chose to do. :)

Have you tried giving your daughter a bottle of warm milk before bed and cuddling with her for a while? This is what I had to do with my son. Unfortunately you have to be firm about not breast feeding anymore and if she cries for a few nights than so be it. It will pass. I promise.

Does she have a lovey to sleep with ?????

1 years old is also a growth-spurt time... so they get hungrier.
BUT... why don't you give her some whole milk, instead? Because at this age... they can drink that.

Your child is young, so don't know if she will understand... but what my friends did, is they put Band-Aids on their nipples... then told their child "Mommy's milk is broken...." or, "Mommy has a boo-boo...." and they said that worked for them.

all the best,
Susan
