My doctor prescribed arythromycin (sp?) for my daughter (she's 12 months old). She has taken it in the past without much trouble, but now she keeps spitting it out. Does anyone have any tips for getting their toddlers to take liquid medicines?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My kids never get soda, so I fill a little medicine cup with soda, Dr Pepper usually or root beer & then add med. & a straw. They suck it down so fast that they never realize it tasted funny. :D Hope this helps you.

I went right to the chewable amoxicillan for my kids at 13 months, but it would really depend on how many teeth your daughter has. My kids both had enough teeth that if I broke it in half they managed just fine and thought it was just another vitamin. Otherwise I would go with the suggesation of flavoring it, my daughter likes the raspberry flavoring for meds we can't get in chewables. Mixing it in things is not great because you may not know how much they got if they don't finish what you mixed it in, or they may not take any of it that way and then you have wasted a dose, you could try bribery. With my son, offering a piece of chocolate makes him do just about anything.

Hi R.

I sympathize with you as I have a 46 month old who will not take any of the oral prescribed medicines that he should be having. I have found with my sensory son to hide the medicine in his favorite foods and usually do not have a problem unless it is the kind that is very strong in taste and smell and nothing works.

If it was prescribed could you have gotten it in a flavor that your daughter likes? Some pharmacies will do this for an extra charge.

Hope this helps.

Try a long, thin syringe and shoot it in the back of her throat. Or get a long nipple from a bottle and the ring and have her suck it in that way. Ask if it can be mixed and mix it with something very strong tasting, like chocolate milk or something.

I did the syringe, and also use her fav candy to bribe her. One M&M and she'll take almost anything. I hold it where she can see it while she takes the medicine.

put it in applesauce or have it flavored by the pharmacy. let the pharmacy know how many doses you gave.

Hi R.,

This is going to sound crazy, but we recently found out that “high fives” are the motivation that my 18 month old needs to take medicine! We give him a little squirt at a time, then make a big deal, clapping and high-fiving. Then we do a little more, more claps, more high fives. We probably do it in about 4 to 5 little baby steps, with lots of high-fives in between. Once in a while he’ll need a little extra motivation to get started, so we’ll take out the tub of Cool Whip and set it where he can see it while he is taking the medicine, then he gets a tiny little taste of the Cool Whip after he’s all done with the medicine and high-fives.

They really don't recommend mixing it with something. When I had this trouble I took it back to the pharmacy and they re-flavored it for me for just a couple of dollars. They can do it for even medicines that are already flavored. I went with cherry because my kids would drink the tylenol cherry if I don't lock it up. Also make sure to use a syringe and give it to her when she is most cooperative. (Although I am sure you already are,)
