Relaxing the jaw helps. He can make a quiet mooing sound or blow rasberries or sing.
Sounds silly but it works! For pooping and giving birth too! Try next time you're having a hard time poopin..lol
I've read many posts and responses and think someone out there may be able to help me. My son is a little over 3 and we are working on potty training. He is willing to sit on the potty and try, but it seems like he only goes when he can't hold it any more. A few times he has said "I want to get it (pee) out!!" Is there some way to help him to relax the muscles to help him to pee on the potty? Thanks in advance for the advice.

I just heard the greatest suggestion...I haven't tried this out as my son isn't potty training age but someone recommended it. Try putting some essence of peppermint (should be available at the drugstore) in the water and then have him sit down. The scent is supposed to relax the muscles. Worth a shot I think! Good Luck!
Like the previous poster mentioned...anything that distracts him from trying so hard should help. My daughter does well if I just leave the room for a moment...I'm only just out in the hallway. Then she doesn't have the added pressure of mommy standing over her waiting.
my first guy kinda needed me to leave the room, for pooping (we didn't have the issue with peeing) ...
my girls, I actually would put my finger on the top of their 'mound' and draw it gently down and say "psssshhhh" to get them to get the "sense" of what direction things were supposed to move, but I don't think that's so pertinent with boys, but I offer it in case it helps ... with the girls, who were both much more language-oriented than my boys (as girls on average are compare to boys on average), I also talked about "relaxing" and "letting it go" and such things, to help them understand the process ...
My last (a boy) seems to be getting most of it put together with or without anyone helping (yay :)! )
I used to read to my son or have him "read" it to us in his own little 3 year old way lol also when ever we put him in the tub it was 30 seconds in the tub and he would have to jump out and go "poo". but as far as going pee...books were our trick along with some dry cheerios to munch on if need be. You can also try and have him "sink" the cheerio by dropping a few into the toilet and tell him to try to hit the cheerio to sink it. You can also use fruitloops they are a little bigger. I think they also have "targets" that you can put in the toilet. Not sure where to get them locally but here is a link you can use to buy them online http://www.pottytrainingconcepts.com/CTGY/Toilet-Targets....
Hi D.
We always use a bowl of warm water for my little guys to play in and soak their hands in. It helps them to relax and go to the bathroom.
Have you tried reading some books on the potty so he's not so focused on it?
Sounds weird, but give him something to "read" while he's sitting. Anything to distract him a little might help him relax the muscles and not be so worried. My daughter likes to flip through Reader's Digest and there's lots of pictures so I don't have to actually read it to her every time.
