Hello moms, just wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of permanent marker from leather. My 2 yr. old found a black sharpie in his sister's room and went to town with it! I can't seem to get them off my husband's leather theater seat chairs, any help will be greatly appreciated!

I would try sol-u-mel by meleluca. You can find it on eBay. I've used it to get perm marker off my nice wooden desk that my daughter scribbled on, everywhere! It is oil based, but I would test it out in an area you can't see first to make sure the dye doesn't come off. This is what I would try or a proffessional.

Hairspray is an old remedy for that.

I have a solution for you and it will be safe for your leather. It is a product called Sol-U-mel. If you would like to see a product demonstration, go here: http://www.saferforyourhome.com/demonstrations.htm#2
It is an all natural product and it is great. I use it for so many things around my house. It comes in a concentrated form and you mix it depending on the need. It has melaleuca oil in it (which is a more powerful, concentrated form of tea tree oil) and it is great for other things like a safe alternative for bug spray. I love that because I don't want to put regular bug spray on my little ones, so I can mix the sol-u-mel 1:11 for bug spray. Then, I can leave it full strength for tough jobs like permanent marker which we have experienced on our wood floors! There are so many more uses, too! Anyway, if you are interested in buying this product, I can tell you where and how to get it. Don't worry...I don't sell it. I'm just crazy about telling folks about the company who makes it, because I absolutely love it. If you are interested, go to http://www.switchingstores.com/amberblake, request more information and I will call you to tell you about this company that makes Sol-U-Mel and other all natural products.

The type and quality of the dye on the leather may be your determining factor on whether the dye is affected by whatever you use to get it off and the rubbing. One tip was to use q-tips and minimize the area touched in the cleaning process.

Some solutions say alcohol based products will take off the ink, others say alcohol products will strip the leather and discolor. (Be careful!)

Check out this link: http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf102564.tip.html

1.) Ok. Mr. Clean Magic Erase is the devil! Sharpie mark on my Tan leather sofa... Left the marker and just stripped the tan color and finish.

2.) I tried: baby wipes; sunscreen, magic eraser, saddle soap and WD40. None of them worked. The eraser was taking the color off along with the marker. The others did nothing. So, I used Avon's Skin So Soft body spray. I put it on a cloth and rubbed lightly until it all came off. It was like magic. I thought these sofa's were ruined. Now, they are as good as new. You can't tell the red marker was ever there.

3.) I had a very large blue sharpie stain on my tan leather couch. I tried leather cleaner spray cleaners and everything I could think of. I finally used Hawaiian Tropic sunblock spf 45 and it finally came off with no discoloration. Do not use alcohol based products; it will cause discoloration!

Hi M., I'm a huge fan of Mr. Clean Magic Eraser when it comes to leather sofas. Just be sure to allow the area you've cleaned to dry and apply leather conditioner to it immediately after that or else it could cause drying or cracking of the leather. Good luck!

I second that advice on the sol-u-mel. It's awesome! You can get that plus tons of other wonderful products by shopping at the online store that sells it. There are MORE products that are amazing from the store and you can't get them all on ebay. Let me know if you are interested in it....

You don't want to damage the leather finish, so don't use any abrasive cleaners. WD 40 is a lubricant, but it also breaks up some stains, without damage to the finish. Just be sure to test on an inconspicuous spot first. Wouldn't want to trade one discoloration for another ;).

Just had the same problem. I took a dry erase marker and colored over the sharpie and then wiped it off really fast. I had to do that a couple of times, it came off really easy. I then conditioned to spot and now you can't tell that my 2 year old colored the couch with marker.
Good Luck.

Lexol is the only thing I would try. Get the condition and see if that helps, use saddle soap as a second, just in case.

Try it in a hidden spot first, but dry erase markers will often dissolve permanent marker. Saddle soap will help remove any residue and condition the leather.

I have no idea how to get out ink...however, if you do get the ink out, dont forget to give your leather a good rub down with a real good lotion from time to time, ie, Neutrogena, Bath and body works...essentially anything that is low in alcohol and high in cream. My leather couch is almost 9 years old, it looks as good as the day they delivered it. Leather, after all, is a skin.

When my son was 3 (he's 8 now) he did the same thing. We still have sharpie marks on our couches. tried the baby wipe thing and it made them lighter but it did not remove them. everything else i have found that removes marker is harmful to leather. The only choice we were given was to have the couches dyed. Since i didn't want them any darker we opted to "live" with it until the kids are older. Sorry I know this isn't much help.

Hi M.,
I would try a magic eraser in an inconspicuous spot and see what it does to the leather. If it doesn't discolor it, I would try it on the marker areas. I know that rubbing alcohol will take it out of fabric. Maybe you could try it on the leather. Again, try it in an inconspicuous spot first.
Good luck!

The Magic Eraser cleans sharpie off of walls. Perhaps it will help the couch. I would test on a the leather in an inconspicuous place before trying it, though.

I know this seems crazy, but baby wipes almost always work and don't do any damage.

Certainly test whatever you do first. The Magic Eraser is fantastic, but also mildly abrasive. I would be very careful with using it on leather. Try calling the store that you got it from, or a professional. You will mostlikely need to use some kind of oil based cleanser to avoid loosing the dye. Chances are that if you get the ink out, you will end up taking some of the dye out too. I would spring for a professional for leather, myself, then I would lock all perm markers in a lockbox. lol. Much cheaper than replacing it. Good luck.

i would try majic eraser. try it on the back or a place it wont be seen. before you do anything i would call the manufacture or even a car dealership ( leather seats ). oil based anything might leave a stain, liquid anything might leave a stain. make sure it is all leather and not some knock off pleather. good luck.
