My son was recently diagnosed with ADHD at 4 1/2 years of age. Does anyone know of a preschool that will take him in. He's already been taken out of two preschools for being very disruptive. Now that I know what the problem was, I'm having a difficult time entering him in any school. I am a single mom and I can't afford not to work, as much as I would love to be a stay at home mom.

What can I do next?

Hi I have a almost 4 year old that goes to a special needs preschool in Mesa. When I wanted him evaluated for speech therapy I just called the mesa school district and they gave me the info to get things started. He now gets picked up and dropped off in front of my house by the bus and he has learned so much since August! I dont know where you live but just call your school district. You can find them in you phone book. I hope this helps!

Is he on medication? That should be helping. My son is ADD as well and has no problems as long as he's on his meds.

My name is A., I have an 8 yr old girl and an almost 5 yr old boy with speech delay, adhd, and is bipolar. I had him in preschool in at a elementary school, and that is how i found out about the speach delay about a year ago. I have had so much help with the school system. With him having an IEP (an independent elvaluation through the school) he has gotten alot of help. I have also learned that the special needs classes have changed dramatically. The adhd and bipolar are new and we are working through them. They can put adhd kids in special need classes. This way the classes are smaller and the teachers can focus on the kids. The teachers can redirect the kids to their needs intead of the kids looking defient or bad. Also my son is violent and putting him in a different class next year lets me know the other kids will be safe because he cannot controll it. Find your main office for the public schools and talk to them. Everyone has been so helpful and understanding to me. They will place your child in the most comfortable setting for your him. And when i go to work i don't worry any more that my phone will ring that my child is acting out. It is worth it, the public schools have been a blessing. And i never thought id say that.

I realize your request is a year old now, I am new to the website... It may be too late, your son may be in public school by now - but there is one preschool/elementary I know of that is geared towards "troubled" kids. I checked it out for my daughter when her preschool threatened to kick her out. It is called "Spatula Soup". I was able to work with her preschool and keep them from kicking her out - she made it through Kindergarten and then transitioned to public school.

Other advice I can give, after spending the last 8 years trying to get adequate help for my daughter... Her diagnosis is bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and ADHD. Be very careful that you are only dealing with ADHD, and not something more. Many doctors dismiss the other disorders, saying children don't have them - even though they are genetic... I tried Herbal, Naturapathic, Homeopathic, diet/supplements, to help my daughter before I resorted to pharmacological. Only the medications have helped. Don't fear them or feel like less of a mom if you choose to use medication. These disorders are brain-chemistry issues. Introducing chemicals to balance the brain out, may be the only answer. The other ways are maybe 30% effective, that means the other 70% of people won't be helped with these "natural" choices...

Keep on top of your school. If you can't afford a private school - most of us can't... stay in the public school system. The State regulates the special education and can be a big help if your local school or district fights you. It took me five years to get an IEP for my daughter. Contact the state special education department and find out all your rights.

Good luck, I know what you are going through.

I remember seeing on here some advice about adhd that there is a shake called reliv that helps instead of meds. It is suppose to help. I will try to find the request it was in.

If the doc diagnosed him with ADHD, they should be able to give you advice on who to contact for resources. My friend's son has adhd too. She eliminated all sugar and juices from his diet. And she believes takiing him to the chiropractor helps too. Contact your local school district to get him tested. They might recommend a preschool program at one of the local schools. Or contact Raising Special Kids www.raisingspecialkids.com. Someone can contact you in this area.

Good Luck!

Hi A.-

The previous person is right about calling your school district. Any child over the age of 3 can be evaluated and placed in the most conducive environment for learning. If you're not sure what school district you live in ask a neighbor.
