I am 29 weeks pregnant with my third. It has not been an easy pregnancy this far but I am trying to make the best of it! The problem I am having now is back pain and sleep issues. I wake up due to my back hurting at least every hour or two. I sleep on my side with a body pillow but this isn't helping. I'm exhausted and miserable and don't know what else to try. I have my next appt with my OB in a week and I'll talk to him about it but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

What can I do next?

I also agree with chiropractic, massage and accupuncture. All will help maintain optimal health. You could also try standing in a hot shower with the water hitting your back before bed. It is also said that the cool down process after a warm bath at night helps sleep.

Good luck! D.

Find yourself a Chiropractor with experiences working with pregnant woman. It will make a HUGE difference I promise. I have gone through a pregnancy without chiropractic and with it and I will tell you that I will never go through a pregnancy without it again! I normally have intense hip pain while pregnant become of the relaxin being produced. With my first pregnancy I would literally cry out in pain as I would try to roll over in bed at night becuase of the pain in my hips and back. With my second pregnancy I knew I want to find a good chiropractor right away and I never got the pain I got in my first pregnancy. If I would start to get pain in my hips and back I would make an appointment with my chiro and would feel amazing when I left his office.

Personally, I wouldnt wait a week...why be miserable? Call and talk to your doctor or the nurse...tell them what is going on and ask if they have any suggestions? You are not the first pregnant Mom to experience this and I bet they have dealt with this on a regular basis!! If there is a midwife involved with your Ob/Gyn office, ask to speak to her...she will have some great suggestions I am sure!!!
One thing that might help is to ask your husband too give you a back rub...especially concentrating on the muscles in the small of your back. Similar to the pressure that they suggest for use during labor. Hey..even if it doesn't help you sleep it is going to feel FABULOUS!!!!!!
Good luck and congratulations on your new little bundle!!

Check out resources online that discuss exercises you can do. Bring them into your OB and see what they say. I found that stretching gently, being on my hands and knees and arching and rounding my back helped.

Also, invest in some pregnancy massages through a certified therapist who SPECIALIZES in preggo massage and maybe even has one of those tables with the cut out hole.

Pregnancy is a medical condition, not just some fact of life you should be expected to endure. Do what you need to, to take care of yourself.

I had such bad back issues after a car accident that my husband bought me one of those massage chairs/pads for Christmas. I used it a lot during my third pregnancy. It was PRICELESS. I would soak in the tub, then get comfy in my "chair". It helped me to relax, my muscles to stretch and expand, and for me to get some much needed rest.

Oh yes and check out Water Exercise Classes for pre/post baby. They allow you to move in an almost weightless environment that you simply can't on land. It's only for preggos so you don't have to feel selfconscious about getting into a swimsuit. I taught and took these classes. You can move your hips and legs like neverbefore!!! Plus I really think this little bit of exercise helps you to sleep better. And it's really nice to have other preggos who are "suffering" like you and have a lot of the same questions as you to talk to and look forward to seeing every week!

I hope you find some relief.

Have you tried the couch? OUr bed is ultra soft with the pillow top on the mattress. Alot of my prego friends say the same thing, just needed something more firm.

I was never comfortable sleeping prego and tynelol never helpped my backaches or headaches. I could fall asleep on the couch better than the bed. When my back hurt so much i felt like crying, i used half a Vicodine. My OB said it wont hurt my baby but ask yours to see if it right for you. A little narcotic goes along way with me so a half took the edge off and i could function or take care of my then 3.5yr old.
If you get leg cramps alot or just feel like your legs dont want you to stop moving ask about L-Carnitine. It helps the circulation, gives a engery boost, and might even help prevent or delay gestational diabeaties. That was my prego problems with first pregnancy and took during my second pregnancy to prevent said problems from returning adn they didnt

I am on #4 and have had serious back pain each pregnancy, however this one is exceptionally painful. I do not sleep from about 2am on. There are two things I do. Each morning when it is shower time, I fill the tub with water (about 4 inches or so of water) as hot as I can stand it, then I lay on my back with my legs up on the edge of the tub for about 3 to 4 minutes then I go to a shower. This was recommended by my OB and it certainly does help. Sometimes I do it in the evening before bed as well. The second thing I do is sleep on my back. I know it is taboo but the sleep issues were becoming so severe my OB said I could sleep on my back. The danger in sleeping on your back is the lack of oxygen your body is getting due to the weight of the baby. It will not hurt the baby but when you get up you can pass out. Needless to say, I just get up each morning and sit in bed for a minute or two before I stand up, even then, I take it slow.

Good luck!

I'd agree to contact your OB/GYN as well before your appointment next week. Who knows what it may be, but I'm always a fan of calling to be sure it's nothing serious.

I had the same problem. It ended-up that my pelvis is out of line, and I have sciatica. So pregnancies are really tough on me, especially sleeping in my second.

Massage did nothing for me because the aggravated muscle is so deep. I still have problems but not to the extent as during pregnancy. My OB/GYN is opening to the idea of chiropractic, but he was more favorable to Physical Therapy should it have been needed.

Good luck!

Find a spa in your area that offers pregnancy massage. They specialize in this sort of thing. It will be the best thing you ever did.

Not from personal experience - but try yoga, I have some friends who did prenatal yoga and they had a lot fewer aches and pains. I would make sure the instructor is certified for prenatal yoga though. My understanding is that the postions used are chosen specifically with the pregnant female body in mind. BTW - the only reason I did not go that route is because I had never heard of it....

Good luck!

When your back starts to hurt, get on your hands in knees (like you are a dog) and just sit like that for a bit. It will release the pressure off of your spine. I would do this a few times a day, but also when it hurts.

Another trick is to put your back agains the wall and try to get all of your back on the wall. It may take you a while to figure out how to do it, but if you can it will help. This stretches the muscles around the spine.

Back pain sucks when your are and are not pregnant!!! I have it all the time and it was really bad when I was pregnant.

Chiropractic for sure! I don't know what I would have done without it during my pregnancy! The benefits of it go farther than just helping back pain, it aslo helps keep your pelvis balanced which helps keep the uterus balanced. This allows the baby to get in proper position for delivery and makes for a smoother delivery. Would not do pregnancy without it!

I, too, had chronic back pain with my third child so I know first hand the pain you are in. It is really how the baby is nestled inside of you and unfortunately, there is not much you can do. My doctor always suggested lying down on my side, preferably the left, which you have indicated you are doing but still not finding comfort. Towards the end of my pregnancy I could barely stand or walk very far because the pain was so bad. DO talk to your doctor about it. I don't think he will offer much advice, I'm sorry to say. Hang in there. You are more than half way through your pregnancy and before you know it, it will be over with. I know this is easier said than done. I am currently pregnant with my 4th and enduring nausea and vomiting and I just cannot wait to be over this so I can start feeling better.

I am also having a lot of back and pelvis pains, especially at night. To relieve my back pain, i sleep with 3-5 pillows stacked up behind me, about a 60 degree angle. I'll sleep like this for a couple of hours, then i have to sleep on my side, nearly flat with the body pillow between my legs and a small pillow at the small of my back for extra back support, I also have part of the body pillow under my belly. Lots of work to get sleep, but this has helped me.

I hope u have found some relief.

Using a back support and supportive stockings also help during the daytime. Back pains at night might be caused by very tired muscles due to the weight being carried.
