Help! Numb Knees and Auras in Vision

I am just wondering if anyone has any clue what could be going on...

I have suffered from chronic migraines for about 8 years and have been on Topamax for that long as well as blood pressure medicine and it has seemed to work. About 3 months ago, I started having auras in my vision which the doctor (and Optometrist) said were now Ocular Migraines. They did not run a cat scan or MRI. About 2 months ago, I noticed something else that has worried me. When I wake up in the morning sometimes (I think it has happened maybe 4-5 times), I go to stand out of bed and just collapse on the floor. It feels as if my knees are asleep. I have to lay there from anywhere between 3 - 5 minutes until the feeling comes back. I've tried standing up to walk before my knees were ready and just collapsed again. I have also noticed my arms doing it. I'll go to turn my alarm clock off and the best way I can describe it is it feels like my arm is dead and I have to pick it up with my other arm. I didn't put the two together until yesterday and could be totally off base by doing so. I just got really worried because the last time I collapsed (this past Wednesday) I was about 2 inches from slamming my head against the wall. I had not said anything to the doctor because at first I merely thought I had just slept in a weird position and lost circulation in my extremeties, because the feeling eventually comes back. I just wanted to get some advice and see what others have to say. By the way, I have an appointment for my physical on the 28th of July, so I was going to say something to the doctor then... Please help, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I would like to thank everyone for their replies. I went to the doctor the day after I sent the original post. He had me go get an MRI done as well as blood work. I got my results yesterday for the MRI and they found that I have what is known as, Chiari Malformation. It is where part of the brain is growing out of the base of the skull, restricting spinal fluid flow. I am currently getting an appointment made with my neurologist to see what can be done. All of the research that I have done on this has said that surgery, that supplies a decompression of the region (meaning they remove part of the back of my skull as well as my C1 vertebra) is the only cure. They will only do this depending on if they think my symptoms are getting severe enough.

Again, I thank you all for your input and concern. I feel truly blessed to have had your help.

There are lots of things this could be and not necessarily scary K.. Please don't procrastinate. Sometimes early intervention makes a difference. I'd go see the doc NOW, and agree with a previous poster that a neurologist may be in order. Could all be migraine related and a medication adjustment is in order. Seizures also come to mind.......which often can also be controlled with meds.
What you see as auras could be a warning for a specific type of seizure. Almost 3 million people in the United States have seizures. It is much more prevalent than you would think and often easily controlled.

Hi, K. - the timing for the auras and collapsing is way too close to ignore the connection. I agree with the previous poster about getting to the doctor sooner than later. I tend to avoid a problem that I think will be serious, and it sounds like you might do the same.

Sounds like it's something in the nervous system. Please, get it checked out this week if you can. If your doctor doesn't find anything, go to a neurologist.

BTW, it may take some time to get into a neurologist, so consider that delay in your timeline.

I suffer from Ocular Migraines as well. They are terrible. I see a neurologist for them and the first thing they did was run a MRI and CT scan. I would contact your doctor sooner than waiting for your physical. Numbness in your limbs could be an issue you don't want to neglect. I've been seeing an Upper Cervical Doctor for my Migraines. Turns our I had a slight tilt in my vertebrae that was causing a nerve to be pinched and possibly causing my migraines. Since I've been going for regular adjustments I haven't had a single one. Just thought it might be something for you to look into as well. Pinched nerves can reach havoc on the body.

I don't want to scare you but the collapsing sounds serious. I have a feeling that you may realize that and are afraid so that's why you haven't called your doc sooner. I think that you should at least call your doctors office today and tell them what is going on-if they think you should be seen immediately then go. They may say to just wait until your appointment. Either way you should look into it -esp since you almost hit your head on the wall. Don't wait until the end of July. Best of luck to you.

There is a kind of paralysis that some people get where they wake up in the morning and can't move (it's what keeps us from flailing around during dreams). It also only lasts a few minutes. Wondering if it can be partial paralysis in your case? I have woken up with an arm that I couldn't move due to lack of circulation, but it was cold. Also, as the circulation comes back, it tingles and hurts.

I just woke up and my brain is still asleep, lol, so I can't remember the name of the paralysis upon waking. When I think of it, I'll edit my post so you can look it up, unless someone else lets you know first.

Also, you can get "silent migraines" where you don't feel head pain. My daughter has had them for years, even to the point where she's nauseated and throwing up. Arms (and lips and face), can go numb with migraines, but I've never heard of it with knees, though that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Please test your legs before getting out of bed, or hold on to something so you don't get hurt, and get to a doctor!

Edit: I looked it up and it is sleep paralysis. It affects quite a few people, and, in some instances, it can actually be caused by some medications. I couldn't find anything on partial paralysis, though, so it might not have anything to do with what you are going through.

Second Edit: Just found something about "paralysis of only one limb" in sleep paralysis. You might ask your doctor about this.

Have you had your blood pressure checked lately? Collapsing upon standing could be a sign that it is too low, due to the medications. I would definitely see the doctor ASAP. Good luck!
